Ha!!! I really hate how you can commit yourself so lovingly in response to an emotional comment only to find that the auto-play takes you onto the next song & wipes out all your hard-won & just f***kin perfect reply. Bollux. Anyway, I'lllll try afudging again. But like Laura I abso love Garbage and their 101million% ability of lifting you up high and away over the brown-sludge despair of depression. Their amazing talent is so so spot on it never fails. Even when I'm not in sludge-brown depression & inadvertently hit a play Garbage button will take you on a guaranteed trip of happiness. Thank you Laura for your emotive punchlines that inspired me to reply & most of all thanks x a Zillion to Garbage. Jeez, I only discovered today that Garbage are a USA band & there I was for so many years now being so proud in thinking they were a UK birth right. Now if that does not give away some rather innovative interpretations about me then, I'm a monkeys uncle, (without being a labelled racist). ❣💞

I see what you did there. ... I think most of this sentiment is nostalgia but then again: Yes, the 90s where the decade, when music companies narrowed in on the "perfect" formula for "The Music (C)". By the 00s, they had that perfected and that refined formula was all they ever produced. That said, there is still good music produced today - no wait, the music by formula X is good ... there is also still CREATIVE music produced today. Hey, "Strange Little Birds" came out in 2016. :-) But it's more difficult to find, you can't just turn on the radio and expect them to play special music. - Although I don't think all hope is lost, if you look at the rocket success of Billie Eilish of the last 3 years, compared to the music of the likes of Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran (who are both good musicians but have not really done anything new compared to the music trends that dominated the 00s and 10s (and honestly in an unrefined form much of the 90s, already, I mean Spice Girls? Take That? 90s!)) she has really introduced a lot of new takes on music (or at least new takes on elements, that were not popular for a while)
@Yvory62 жыл бұрын
@@Maxuras I think we can exclude spice girls of the trend cause that style was the 5 members band recipe, like backstreet boy and n-sync and was aimed at younger audience who started listening music...

She was a great role model for young teen girls in the 90s. I remember feeling so ugly, and thinking she was so beautiful. I got compared to her a few times though I still mostly think it was the hair and the fact that I really tried to dress like her and do similar makeup. I saw an interview with her and she talked about always feeling ugly growing up. She was so candid and humble about her very human insecurities around not being pretty enough, or good enough, but still going for her goals. She also mentioned how Siouxsie and the Banshees helped her with her insecurities, just like how Garbage did for me. It made me realize that even the most attractive people have insecurities, and everyone’s minds occasionally lie to them, but it doesn’t make it true. At least now when I feel ugly, I take it with a grain of salt, because nobody feels hot every single day. Shirley, you are still amazing, and an inspiration to so many women who found your music in our younger days. I hope you know that! I first heard this song during the end of my first on and off relationship, at 14. He was an ass... and honestly so was I at the end, but only to get the point across that I wasn’t doing that shit anymore. Never dated another ex for a second time after that.

@@joshuahernandez3216 True, but when I was little at the time things were less accessible to me and didn't have much exposure to a lot of those bands. The only earliest band I can remember was Alice In Chains, just one song played in Street Fighter II Animated Movie back in '94, but that's all I can remember. I was still in preschool at the time.

Here is my song for "SPECIAL" people out there who is making a difference in this world. I-I-I-I-I'm living without you I-I-I-I-I know all about you I have run you down into the ground Spread disease about you over town I-I-I-I-I used to adore you I-I-I-I-I couldn't control you There was nothing that I wouldn't do To keep myself around and close to you Do you have an opinion? A mind of your own? I thought you were special I thought you should know But I've run out of patience I couldn't care less I-I-I-I-I I-I-I-I-I Do you have an opinion? A mind of your own? I thought you were special I thought you should know I-I-I-I-I used to amuse you I-I-I-I-I knew that I'd lose you Now you're here and begging for a chance But there's no way in hell I'd take you back Do you have an opinion? A mind of your own? I thought you were special I thought you should know But I've run out of patience I've run out of comments I'm tired of the violence I couldn't care less I'm looking for a new I'm looking for a new I'm looking for a new I'm looking for a new We were the talk of the town We were the talk of the town We were the talk of the town We were the talk of the town I thought you were special I thought you were special I thought you were special I thought you were special

I love everything about this track, but maybe my favourite thing is the nods it makes to The Pretenders - there's something really cool and clever and fun about it. I did read the story behind it, but I can't remember whether the idea to do that came up during the writing of the song (because of the way the word 'special' features so memorably in 'Brass in Pocket') or during the later recording of it. I know that Shirley Manson is a big Chrissie Hynde fan, and her vocal delivery here is clearly influenced by her idol. It's not just the vocals, though - the guitar licks could be lifted from a Pretenders song too. By the time we get to the song's coda, it's become practically a full-on Pretenders tribute: 'You were the talk of the town...' I love it!

M.G. Gallagher According to Wikipedia, Shirley phoned Chrissie for permission to use the lyric, which Chrissie promptly authorised without having heard 'Special', and without asking for any credit nor royalties. Shirley's rendition sounds impressively faithful to the original I reckon.
