Today we have an on board look of SWOWs yard truck with yours truly behind the wheel. When one of our loader operators took vacation, my boss gave me the privilege to learn the roll off responsibilities around the yard. For the first week however I learned how to drive stick, as this has a 9 speed manual transmission. Having never driven a manual of any kind in my life, I needed to get the hang of that first before driving around with full (and sometimes heavy) 50 yarders. It definitely took some practice and even after having it down I still nearly killed it pulling the garbage bin out (1:27) and then I definitely killed it when dumping (3:13). The trick with this truck was the clutch took forever to engage, so I would typically get off the clutch too soon.
So here we have the main responsibilities the roll off is used for in the morning before the site opens, and that’s to empty the three main bins for self haulers; Garbage, Single Stream Recycle and Cardboard.
00:00-02:33: As you can see garbage can be extremely heavy, this one was the heaviest I lifted at a little over 4.5 tons. So I definitely took my time
02:34-03:47: Unloading Garbage
03:48-04:50: Unloading Single Stream
04:51-05:34: Picking up cardboard. This was by far the easiest bin to pick up with there being no obstacles and not having to worry about weight, I was able to load this bin the quickest
05:35-06:34: Unloading Cardboard
06:35-08:01: Some exhaust sounds while driving back to the scale
08:02-09:20: Dropping Cardboard
09:21-10:01: Ending it on a “low” note
A HUGE thank you to my supervisor for showing up a little bit earlier than usual each day to coach me through driving a manual and for also being super patient with me while I was learning, I can not thank her enough. Overall this truck is pretty fun to drive once you get the hang of things and then operating it add to the enjoyment! Hope you guys enjoy!
