exactly my thoughts, but lately they, and many other charities are refusing to take furniture. so much of it now ends up in the landfill, when we know there are needy families out there. When we downsized, we advertised everything on Facebook and OfferUp. Needy families got very nice kids bedroom set, living room furniture and a whole lot more. We sadly still ended up having to send a few pieces to the landfill.

How did you get them to even come pick that UP? Our trucks can only pick up the specific receptacles that the city issues when you sign up. It uses a robotic grabber/dumper that only works with those. Anything else, you have to haul to the landfill yourself, or hire somebody to do it for you.

I work in a landfill and everyone that's saying oh it could of went to a second hand store or recycled, I'm gonna let you guys in on a secret most of those big second hand companies throw away more usable stuff then homeowners, also it only takes 1 single piece of trash in a recycle load to be considered contaminated so the whole load is then taken straight to the landfill, I know the concept of recycling is good and it makes everyone feel good about themselves and the planet but truth be told only about 35% of what you "recycle" actually gets reused.

We also have local recycling stations that we can take our items to place in different recycling bays in plastics separate and wood waste disposal and build waste areas to have different bins for different types of building materials and waste disposal and clothing waste areas for sofas and beds and mattresses for a separate disposal areas and garden waste areas and separate waste disposal for trees stumps and branches for old paint and oils and batteries etc we have different types of bins for different materials and not just dump everything in a single load and landfills sites and people have different colours of bins to sort out their own waste disposal and place the bin outside of their property on the recycling days for the different types of waste. We get fines for placing the wrong things in the wrong bin and then they refuse to empty the bin that is contaminated with the wrong type of waste

They have different bin lorries . Ours lift the bins way way higher . And the reason you can't leave your lid open is quite simple .. the comb on the lip of your bin has to match the teeth on the bin lift .. if not the bin either falls off or falls in . So you have to be able to see the front 2 corners of the bin. Councils never tell the public WHY things are done a certain way . They just say it's for 'elf n safety I'm sure the public would rather know why . They'd be a lot more understanding . .
