The Multipla is a car I "get", the 3+3 seat configuration is useful it's just not all that reliable or well built. Now the PT Cruiser is a car I really don't understand, badly made, cheap interior and a massive turning circle. My step-mum had a PT Cruiser cabrio around 2007 for a couple of years and it was terrible, a 2.4L but still slow and was not exactly fuel efficient, the 1.7L Diesel KIA 'ceed that replaced it did about double the MPG whilst being faster, better made and cheaper (although the cost difference didn't matter as it was a Motability car and none required any extra money).

I think this is a better update to the term "design by committee". It's not a problem of too many voices, but rather cars (or just things) designed by a soulless suit who doesn't care about anything but it's ROI, channelled through overly atomic and abstract and necessarily simplistic data sets. Corporate spreadsheet design.

@shraka4 ай бұрын
@@BlueOvals24 It is the suits. If auto makers would take the requests and demands of wider society seriously the government wouldn't regulate them. But they make more money in the short term if they ignore and fight against change until it's illegal not to. Mazda weren't forced to make small inline engines, they just refused to use a rotary in a generator hybrid even though the writing has been on the wall since 1990 - three and a half decades ago. They also lobby against public transport and for wider roads in collaboration with oil companies and tyre manufacturers. This makes more normies who don't care about cars buy the most boring boxes they possibly can, rather than settling for something more interesting they can spend less time in. And it means the CO2 from each car is a bigger issues as there's more of them. All the R&D does into catering for people who'd prefer not to be in a car at all. That's the result of their own long term planning. And despite all the regulation they can still make cool cars anyway. Look at the GR86, MX-5, Fiat 500, Jaguar F-Type, and apparently even the new Prius drives pretty well.

As a Brit that likes old MG, modern MG is a mixed bag. Cars like the zero-star MG5 are rebadged Chinese crap that should never have an MG badge near them, but then cars like the MG4 XPower and Cyberster exist because the MG team in London (which is where they're headquartered and do all the interior designs and drive dynamics) fought for decades to get SAIC to let them build something worthy of the MG badge. Their first attempt was for MG's 90th anniversary; they turned the little MG3 (which is basically an old Rover Streetwise) into a hot hatch with an absurd wing, trick suspension and 210hp called the MG3 Trophy 90. Reception was good, coverage was good, customers seemed interested and SAIC turned it down. The only reason we have the MG4 and Cyberster is because when SAIC wanted to demo their new electric platform, MG designers in the UK BEGGED SAIC to make the concept car a big sports coupé with an MG badge on it. If SAIC had any sense they'd let MG be more autonomous like Geely did with Lotus and Volvo. Hopefully the Cyberster is a success so SAIC will let MG do more wild shenanigans.

The blob cars from every manufacturer isn't because people want them, it's to dodge US regulations because crossovers and SUVs are classified as light trucks. This allows them to have more relaxed emissions, efficiency, and safety standards than a smaller car. 11:06 About Toyota trying to keep ICE engines, It's mainly because the Japanese Government is trying to push EVs while not having the required amount of output from the Japanese power grid. Hence why Toyota's been pushing the Hydrogen fuel cell train. I would argue that this is actually good cause in developing countries where power grids are commonly susceptible to failure. Cause in the case of a mass power failure, not only would you be unable to do most tasks that require electricity, you couldn't even get around and go to another city which has power. It's harder to storage electricity than petrol which means if you're going thru lets say a very isolated patch of land, it's practically impossible to go thru it, if it exceeds the range limit of that EV, while in the case of ICE engines all you need is just a can to storage either Petrol or Diesel. Simple, yet elegant.
@ryllharu6 ай бұрын
Toyota has been very carefully working on their hybrid models, very effectively. They're a very cautious company overall, and as of the end of last year, hedging their bets on the EV business model worked out. Most of their competitors over-invested in EV production, or announced huge cuts in their ICE lineup, and they're *all* backing off because customer demand simply is not there. Toyota has played around more with different transition technologies, and it's paid off for them.

LDV is closer to MG than you think. Started out as the British Leyland Sherpa van in the mid-70s, during restructuring in the early 80s the Freight Rover part of what was becoming Austin Rover was placed under the control of Land Rover. The same Sherpa van was now called the 200 series, and a larger 400 series was introduced. Leyland trucks was at some point grouped in with Freight Rover, and then in the late 80s was sold off to DAF trucks (the vans were now badged as Leyland DAFs). 4 years later DAF went bankrupt, and sold off Leyland DAF, only for the management at the factory to buy out the company (becoming at that point LDV (LDV I think officially means nothing, but technically means Leyland DAF Vans). They continued with the same vans, facelifting them and renaming the 200 as the Pilot and the 400 as the Convoy. These survived until 2006 before finally being killed off (over the years having various Ford and Peugeot diesels engines, as well as the Rover 3500 V8 for ambulances, but maintaining the same basic design of the van otherwise). The big reason Toyota just reskinned a Z4 instead of developing a car fresh is because of the cost of government testing and certification. It's why America never saw the GR Yaris, it's why the ND Miata almost didn't happen. Setting aside the actual development costs to bring them into being, there are additional significant costs to have them tested and certified by the various governmental bodies just to be able to sell them. Do I wish Toyota could have built the nupra entirely in house? Yes, I do with all my heart, but nothing is allowed to be good and fun anymore, it's all mandated to be shit by the powers that be.
@Dr.Spatula6 ай бұрын
Anyone that complains about the Supra being a BMW are the same people that would never buy one. If Toyota developed it entirely in house it wouldn't be the 60k car it is. It would be at least double the price and no better. The B58 is currently the best straight six on the market by a far margin, until we know more about the Hurricane at least.
@notreal69666 ай бұрын
If they didn't go to BMW they probably would have done something like use the 86/BRZ platform as a base or something similar, for the reason you suggested there's no way it would ever get a fresh, bespoke platform. As for the engine, I have extreme doubt that Stellantis can make a better inline 6 than the B58.

I owned an 89 Justy for about a year! The hysterical: Surprisingly good ground clearance. Shift-on-the-fly 4WD! In a car so light me and a mate used to grab under each rear wheel arch, lift, and just turn it around as a dumb party trick/bar bet. Between the hardware and extreme light weight, it was an absolute riot off road. You could turn an abandoned construction road into a special rally stage whenever you wanted. The intensely unpleasant: Obviously if you strike a stationary object or someone in basically any other car and some heavier bicycles hits you - you're just getting minced into chunky marinara. My Honda Cub felt both safer and more stable at the same speeds. Most tragically, I think this was the absolute last carbureted car sold in the US. Because the only way to meet emissions spec with a carby that late in the game was to run three rats' nests worth of vacuum lines and linkages around. The carb is nearly a third the size of the engine, hard to find rebuild kits for (and this was 20 years ago), and an intense pain in the everything to diagnose and maintain.

I don't think the theory of "Toyota wants to keep ICEs due to maintenance revenue" holds water because Toyota's whole schtick is that they're almost maintenance-free. Camrys hardly even need oil changes. Plus, EVs don't last more than 10 years, so car companies get recuring revenue that way.
@annjrue6 ай бұрын
Toyota (in the US, at least) is starting to get real ballsy and out there, but for the longest time they’ve just been the most simple “an car” you can get, and I think by electrifying their lineup before they’re ready will price people out of buying a Toyota, and they’re fine with selling things like the Prius. EVs are real expensive to make. The problem with that logic is that everything else they make in the US is so damn expensive it’s pricing people out anyway.
@ToastyMozart6 ай бұрын
It's mostly because Toyota has been dragging their heels on battery production and are afraid the companies that haven't will start eating their lunch. They made their hybrid IVT and have been resting on their laurels ever since.
@bairfamilyfarm13366 ай бұрын
Toyota’s US line isn’t close to maintenance free. I worked in a mechanic shop and the Prius always annoyed me. People brag about how reliable and trouble free they are, yet I’d see a lot of them come in for engine work and brakes repeatedly without many miles. I thought the hybrid system was supposed to make those 2 last longer. I’ve never seen one have transmission problems though. Prius and Ford Escape Hybrids seemed to have bulletproof transmissions.
@SPAZTICCYTOPLASM6 ай бұрын
It's simple marketing. Consider Subaru who toyota has a 20% stake in wants to go all electric. Toyota absolutely has the means to go all electric, they're the second largest car company in the world and electric sales to toyota mean nothing, when their main car is the corolla even when the model y did really well at 1.15million (mostly backorders) toyota sold 1.13 corolla's, followed by another 0.93million ravs. In the top 10 most sold cars in 2023, 4/10 are Toyotas and that's not going away a long time. It's simple marketing for when everyone is jumping on the electric bandwagon, to be the one brand that stands out. Toyota created the modern hybrid, every modern hybrid is basically down stream of Toyotas design. The BZ4X is just a Subaru Solterra. My opinion is we're either gonna see a massive fumble by toyota (which would surprise me), or we're gonna see a eureka moment like Lexus, when toyota launches it's electric brand or car or whatever. It can go both ways Toyota is a family owned company still which is amazing, Akio is the son of the founder of Toyota who was the son of the founder of Toyota industries.

Yeah, Toyota is keeping combustion engines. They were also the first ones to truly mass producer hybrids successfully and continue to. It's not necessarily just for maintenance, though that is part of it; it's because unless you're unrealistically idealistic, it's pretty easy to see that hybrid platforms are practically just more capable and technically energy efficient than pure electric ones. It takes a ton of electricity to get a car from completely stopped to moving, it takes very little gas to do the same thing. Pure combustion engines are the past, but that doesn't necessarily make pure electric the future

Sports car from 1982 they said it did 130mph but no one ever managed to get it past 105, the acceleration was painfully slow 0-60mph is 10.5 seconds, its made of untreated steel so it will blind you when the sun will reflect off the bonnet, and will rust if you leave it in the rain. And yeah whilst it was in back to the future and it went 88mph and it could do that but the speedo didn't go past 85 so you'd never know if you were actually doing it, also stupid gull wing doors that makes it impossible to park anywhere near another car. You had me until your last point on the gull wing doors. They can be tip touching close to another car, and the doors can open all the way, allowing you to get out, and they other vehicle won't even get halfway, while also giving you nearly no room to get out without your door hitting the other car. There's videos on this site that prove that. I think that guy Doug whatshisface has shown that. Now if your complaint was about the shock systems and their eventual wear and tear and their positioning on the doors, you'd have a great point. It's a junker in terms of sports car performance and planning, but it's still a sexy car. Better painted black. I like the looks and loathe the performance and general parts and planning.

Also here's the real kicker, I use the Chevy Corvette as a benchmark for sport cars, basically if it cost more than a same year Vette it better be faster, so in 1981 a Chevy Corvette cost 16K and these are considered the worst Corvettes choked down by all of the usual stuff people say about the 1970s 0 to 60 of 8.1 seconds out of a 5.7L V8, a Delorean costed 25K and is slower, but here's the real kicker that Corvette not hard to get a better engine, I mean the C3 generation lasted from 1968-82, it has the space for a 454, you can throw in a better engine without much work, Delorean is mid engined so you need a FWD engine that makes good power for it, sure they exist now but back in the day nope
