Fun fact, those power steering pumps are used on a ton of Fords from that era! They almost all make that cavitation noise. But I hear you can mitigate some of that by using a handheld vacuum pump to pull out as much air as possible. I haven't tested it on my truck yet, but I hear good things. Nonetheless, Jeff looks like a ton of fun! Love the video!

As a person that has had many Fords, that refurbed power steering pump sounds mostly fine. Ford's are not super quiet like what you may be used to on other vehicles. Here are some things I can recommend that may quiet it down. First, use some soapy water and a spray bottle and spray down the PS hoses (while it's running) and turn the wheel back and forth. There should be no leaks. PS pumps (this goes for any car) can be noisy if there are any leaks as the pumps are sensitive to air. Speaking of air, since this guy was just installed, there's a good chance air may be tried in the pump. You might be able to use a vacuum pump to draw the air out, or you can just drive it, work the wheel, hit some bumps, and keep an eye on the fluid for awhile. You mentioned the AC isn't working. See if it's just out of Freon. This is the most common thing that causes AC to quit. If they are low or empty, the compressor won't kick on. You can get some Stop Leak Freon that usually has some oils in it as well as dyes to show you if there are any bad leaks that need addressed (the oil is lube for the compressor itself). Put a can of that in, and have the rest of them be plain Janes. I assume this vehicle uses R-134a refrigerant as it's a 95 (the US fully transitioned by that year). If it's not and originally took R-12, you can get an adapter for the fitting to put in R-134. If you don't mind paying a bit, I recommend taking it to a shop and hooking it up to a machine. They can evacuate the entire system, check for leaks, and fill it back up with Freon and oil.

My family's obligatory car brand is Volvo. Instead of big block V8s, I was raised on Inline 5s. Not as much fun as a V8, but it can still slam you into the back of your seat if you put the boot down. My first car was a 1990 Volvo 740 GL. Despite being two years older than I am, it had power steering, ABS, electronic windows and mirrors, the whole 9 yards. It was a good car until the transmission intercooler let go, needing a new radiator, and the problem had gone unchecked for so long that after a few months with the new radiator, one of the gears in the transmission broke, resulting in the power delivery stuttering once it came up to temp. IDK where it is now or what state it's in, but that's the way with the nuggets. I'm sure I'll find her again one day. EDIT: Come to think of it, that car also needed a start button. I called it the "Relay bypass button". It was under the hood rather than in the cabin, so I would have to turn the ignition on, open the hood, and then find and press the button to get the thing running. That's the mark of a true nugget.

"Did someone put oil in there?" 'I hope not.' Well... I'd hope they did, just that it was the right kind of oil, since that's what power steering fluid is, mostly mineral oil used as a hydraulic fluid.

My dad is a Ford guy He's owned about 17 '90s F250s, a few late '80s E150s and other econolines, and let me tell ya, he isn't buying so many to build a collection. Fords are so much fun to work on, you can do so much with them that you can't do with other brands. But they suck. When a GM fails (and oh boy do they), you can almost always cheaply replace what you need with a factory condition part. When a Ford fails it's time to go gambling because whatever you get is basically like RNG loot in a dungeon crawler, except you're level 90 in a level 1 area so at best you get something functional, at worst you get a part that was literally seconds before crumbling to dust when it was ripped out of some beater. I'm a GM gal. I don't much care for Chevy's but I love me an Olds or Pontiac. Unfortunately probably not many of either in Australia.

Geez, Jeff is flash for an EF GLi! I had one of those - Wagon, steel wheels, plastic hubcabs that would fly off if you got too far north of 100, no cruise control and an auto you had to overfill for it to not slip out of gear. Occasionally smelt like someone had a spew in the back of it too. And a 6 too, obvs.

In/out play on those power steering pumps is completely "normal." As long as there is no radial play and it's not leaking they're fine. And as far as the noise goes on the new one, it needs more air to be bled out of the system.

This car is great because that 5.0 V8 is an old school F-150 motor.

God, hearing this thing reminds me so much of two cars my parents had when I was a kid - A 1973 Ford Maverick (KIA) and a 1987 Mercury Cougar 20th Anniversary (KIA?). The Maverick made an awful lot of noise but it wanted to _go_ - Having a small-block V8 in it, which only made 140 to the wheels, really helped in a car that weighed give-or-take three 3000lbs/1300kg. The Cougar, on the other hand, made an awful lot of noise and couldn't go if it _tried._

Rare unit! Good to see you bequeathed this old Henry a much needed cash injection of maintenance & repair, as it wasn’t far from death. Ostensibly stock ‘heritage gems’ like these are vanishing one-by-one into memory.. So refreshing to see you not proceed to Frankenstein it via the fooly sik route of zero repairs, cut the springs, chuck on some ebay 20”s and proceed to destroy. Thanks for an entertaining video.
