In the aftermath of World War Two, there was a brief time in British publishing that, free from American products (but not free of their influence), many new small publishers arrived on the scene. Cranking out hundreds of pulpy offerings in Westerns, Gangster, Science Fiction and lurid "Romance".
With all the garish colour covers, purple prose and breakneck production speed of the American pulp industry, these "Mushroom" publishers contended with paper shortages, low ad revenue, striking printers, sharp practice, and an increasingly hostile government and judiciary. All the while, producing the most glorious "trash" in a decade-long spree that has not been matched since.

Those prosecutions had support across the board until the late 1950s. Both Labour and Liberal Parties supported it as did Fleet Street including the Guardian (then the Manchester Guardian). And the Communist Party of Great Britain support it as well, which isn't surprising, though they had a particular hatred for comic books. They also went after saucy postcards artists, notably the legendary Donald McGill. Jenkins' biographies of Churchill and Gladstone are great, though 'Mr. Balfour's Poodle' is shows its biases and Jenkins repeating ideas from 'The Strange Death of Liberal England'. Lionel Fanthorpe really is what my late nan would've called a collector's item.

I'm not surprised Labour supported it. I remember in the general hand-wringing that followed "Brass Eye" being broadcast, it was a Labour minister (Hazel Blears) condemning it without, of course, having watched the damn thing.

@@GenreBooks23 With Labour's support in the 50s, it was from genuine social conservatism. I remember from one of Dominic Sandbrook's books Richard Crossman complaining to either Hugh Gaitskell or Roy Jenkins that Labour Party's NEC were more puritanical than bench of bishops. With New Labour, it always seemed to be purely a PR exercise.
