I get irritated when people can’t separate a character from the real person, so I know it bothers actors.

It does...it's a catch 22. I understand a fan seeing him as Braxton that's one thing....but ppl that are in the perfection of casting actors they should not see him as Braxton.... honestly they shouldn't even be star struck at that point. So I completely agree with Mr Chris and his assessment. It's cool if it's the fans because the James fox show is has a special place in all of our hearts but...he can do other roles....I've seen him in other roles....and none of them was close to what he did with Braxton. He is a real good actor

Clifton Powell and John Witherspoon mastered overcoming typecasting. Many ppl think “BANG! BANG! BANG!” started on Wayans brothers but he was saying that in Boomerang then eventually in Friday. Pinky is such an outlandish character but Clifton Powell sprinkles Pinky’s tone and assholian-ness in all his characters. Sometimes you take a character and add layers to them.

Nope they both played the same type character in damn near all their movies. Clifton Powell did Pinky stepping out of his typecast but it was still in a hood movie. I think it’s fine though everybody can’t play a superhero. Once they embrace the characters and like you said add layers, they’ll get more roles. The roles might be similar but similar is still different.

I see how you could think that, but I think they were mostly talking about the situation and general solutions for what an actor or creative can do not just specifically what Christopher B Duncan can/should do. Even though this discussion did start from his interview. @about the 10:30 mark Symphony ask what can someone who is typecasted do to get out of being typecast. Pierre brought up Jaleel White being seen as only Steve Eurkel for years because he played an over the top character. Nor was he being slandered without being there to defend himself. I watched a very sympathetic and positive reaction from CH on Mr. Duncan’s interview and the specific subject of being typecast.

Same thing happened to Jasmine Guy, she has been trying for years to separate from the “Whitley” character, or even Angela Basset who is a phenomenal actress she will always be remembered for her role as Tina Turner! Sometimes you can play a character so well the character takes a life of its own. I think when that happens actors should embrace that, elevate on it, it’s not such a bad thing if you brought joy and relatable moments for people. Also if you are an amazing actor doesn’t matter what roles you play if you kill them all you will be remembered overall as a great actor!

I hate it for him but he could Tyler Perry this thing and make all that good "Braxton" money until he's able to do things on his own dime. Edit: This reminds me of that episode of Girlfriends when William met Bern Nadette Stanis and had a hard time separating her from Thelma. She was acting but really let us see how hard it can be when you're only seen as a character, not the actor.

I remember Jasmine Guy said they tried to type cast her for playing Whitley, but I see she diversified her characters by choosing roles that were nothing like Whitley. Stomping At The Savoy, Harlem Nights, now she’s in Harlem with Meagan Goode. I would walk in there like “I was Braxton THEN, but NOW I’m this character on this script”

*She pretty much in the same boat, all people see is 'Fancy" no matter what role she plays and all she does these days are those BET, TVOne, Aspire, Tyler Perry bad acting/women wearing bad weaves and men wearing Bigen beards type movies.* *But just to be clear, the Jaimie Foxx show was one of the greats, each character brought their A game and has given us great memories that are hard to match and to duplicate.*

Damn this makes me so sad watching him talk about being called Braxton. As a fan we do it lovingly but don't really think about the fact that this is a human being with real feelings, a real life, real name, all that. They're much more than the character(s) they play and I can say I'm definitely guilty of doing this.

I believe he's staying not only his personal experience, but what happens to a lot of people. We've got to separate the character from the person. I love these people are very talented, but we see him as that one roll and it's up to another producer to allow them to flex out to a different role. If the producer won't let it happen, the people will never see it. That's really a shame.

What I really appreciated about Mr. Duncan‘s interview is that he made it a point to say that it’s Black filmmakers & producers & casting directors who only see him as Braxton whereas the non-black producers and casting directors actually see him as a character for that action film with that romantic interest/lead in the dramatic film or what have you And so I think that goes without saying is that when we are talking about this typecasting as a pertains to black actors and actresses we have to also be willing to look in the mirror and ask ourselves while we pigeonholing these people and keeping them boxed in and not allowing them to grow outside of the iconic roles that we saw growing up that made us laugh because I can see it for myself as an independent black filmmaker I would love to work with all of these people who I watched growing up and I would definitely never want to typecast any of them because when you are typecast as a black actor it makes your career more difficult because people keep holding you to this one role when you’re so much more than that! Thank you Comedy Hype For starting this wonderful and very much needed conversation because what this reveals is that we are our own worst enemy a majority of the time! That’s gotta stop!

This happens to actors who breakthrough in sitcoms first vs starring in a breakthrough film. I use Denzel as an example. If Denzel were to decide to all of a sudden decide to star in a sitcom, most people would say that’s Denzel playing such and such. Because his acting is what brought him to prominence playing various characters vs one. He’s clearly recognizable as himself for his acting. This same thing has happened/happens to many child actors (I.e Steve Urkel, spunky, etc)

Unfortunately it happens to many actors, in 1989 Ed O’Neill was cast as a Naval officer in the film Flight of The Intruder but when screened for a preview audience they all cheered for Al Bundy so the scene was reshot with another actor. With that said, the mistake Monique made only listening to agents who just wanted to profit off her. She had agents who had her and bigger clients than her so the bigger more profitable client got prioritized over her. Unfortunately she wasn’t business minded and realized too late she was being taken advantage of, now she’s lashing out at everyone even those who have more than a financial interest in her success. Long story short agents don’t always no what’s best for a client or care, just as long as they make their money.
