Well, this was, what, one of top two fighting games of the time- because the only other fighting game I knew of from the era was Yie Ar Kung Fu. And the more I watch it, the more I realize it’s not bad at all. It’s just Capcom iterated on it and made something much better, so of course the early version isn’t as good. Ah.. I remember. When I was a kid in the 90s I was introduced to street fighter 2. Then came CE. Then turbo. I could find street fighter 2 arcade machines in many places... grocery stores, hotel lobbies, etc. The whole time I was wondering "isn't there a street fighter 1?" Could never find one, until a family road trip in 95.. stopping in some motel in some backward hick town in Kentucky, in the lobby. Got some quarters to play, I couldn't do special moves like I could in SF2. A simple hadouken was a struggle to get out. From there I understood why it's been largely forgotten.

This game is legendary. As a lifelong avid Street Fighter fan/gamer, I will say that this is the hardest SF game to play of them all. Example: I beat the original Street Fighter 2 in about a week an a half of first playing it. It took me at least 2 months to make it past "Adon" in this game. You see, the fireball/spinning kick/dragon punch weren't as easy to perform as in SF2, but if you managed to pull it off, it did major damage. Sagat was the final challenge, and was an absolute beast.

The original Street Fighter never got a real home console released except for the Turbo CD in 1989 but it was called Fighting Street instead of Street Fighter but it's the same game just ported from the Arcade to the Turbo CD which was a CD ass on to the Turbo Graphix 16. The game did get other home computer ports in the late 80's when the game was released as well. Yeah when most people think of Street Fighter especially old Street Fighter they think automatically think of SF2. No one really remembers or cares about the original Street Fighter. Heck there's never been another official home console port of Street Fighter for any other console except the Turbo CD.

Hard to believe that Street Fighter would not only go on to be a recurring thing, but be the standard by which 2D fighters were designed. This game really sucks. I used to play the six button version of this at the bowling alley on 32nd Street Naval Base in San Diego back in the late 80s. I got pretty good at the Shoryuken and so was able to beat the game anytime I played it. The Shoryuken was not blockable in this game so it made you invincible and all powerful. You could take down an opponent with just one Shoryuken if timed right such as when the opponent charged you - it sometimes connected 3 times. I once knocked out Sagat with one Shoryuken with the round timer at 99 - it starts at 100. I immediately did a Shoryuken at the start of the round and Sagat charged me at the same time aaaaand lights out. Never could reproduce that even when playing it in MAME and using cheats.

SF1 is a case where the team's ambitions exceeded their capability. Contemporary games like Yie-Ar Kung Fu and the arcade Punch-Out didn't have nearly as much depth to their fighter's abilities, but the animation and voice work were well done, so they're all-around well made games. SF1 went bigger with pretty much everything. Some of it worked (six-button layout, special moves) and some of it didn't (two-hit KOs, stiff controls, that voiceover), which leaves the game feeling unfinished (to me at least).
