For anyone wondering - the knockdown and damage taken on Mr. Sandman are both intentional. By getting knocked down at 1:59 or later, Mr. Sandman will do his "Dreamland Express" pattern upon you getting up, which lets you hit him for massive damage. The fight is ~10 in-game seconds faster than it would be otherwise.

Summoning Salt man its been forever since I played this game. must have been 94. on your sandman combos, why do you dodge before the final headshot? i was terrible at this game. I cant remember if I ever even beat sandman.
@tuffhawk138 жыл бұрын
I believe it's to make sure he has proper frame timing--the game rewards perfectly timed punches with a little extra damage, so knowing that a dodge has just the right amount of lag helps him hit that punch at the right time to get that little bit of extra damage to take him down sooner.

It was February 1988, I was in 8th grade, and I didn't have a Nintendo but my friend down the street did. We spent hours playing this game. I finally beat Tyson, (also in the first round) and we got on the phone to tell all of our friends. By the time school started the next day, the whole middle school had heard about it. "Hey, there goes Todd, he beat Tyson last night!" I felt as proud as Kevin Arnold when he kissed Winnie Cooper for the first time! Lol! For those interested, Punch-Out is recognised as one of the first ever games to have facial animation. The huge sprites (for the time) are also something of an achievement.

Why are they caller sprites
@lecapitaineisonyoutoob7 ай бұрын
@@shabeo ...You just made me realise that in all my years of playing, stanning, researching and developing games, I've never even looked that up. EDIT: For those interested, it's a reference to sprites, the folklore/fantasy beings. Computer sprites would "float" across the screen independently of the fixed background, somewhat like folkloric sprites did. In fact, "sprite" was originally only one of multiple terms. At Nintendo, they were called OBJ until the 1990s.

Correct: the NES version is a port of the arcade cabinet, which has a few differences (famously, they made NES Mac little because they couldn't make the arcade's wireframe look right). I _think_ both are also predated by Nintendo's own Arm Wrestling cabinet, which also showcased detailed and expressive faces. edit: The opposite. Punch-Out!! predates Arm Wrestling.

How about the stress level you felt trying to get up before the count of 10 every time Tyson knocked you down with one hit? You had tried desperately to not get hit but one quick punch suddenly you were furiously tapping those buttons trying to stand back up again. Sometimes so frantically that you weren't tapping them correctly so it took longer to get up which made you freak out even more so you had to concentrate hard on hitting them as fast as you could to beat the count of 10. What a rush, what a thrill. The first time you figured out the trick to beat King Hippo because you thought he was impossible. He seemed to block everything and when you did hit him in the jaw he would just block the next shot, because you didn't know you had to then go to the gut. Then he became hilariously easy. Heck even the first time you saw that fat guy and his pants falling down and making fun of the character because he's too fat he can't stand up again..... Bald bull charge timing. Waiting for the second bull charge. The feeling when you nail that precise timing but the stress level when the character stood up again and you had to keep doing it and get your timing right again otherwise you were doomed.... Eventually this became easy. Eventually we became faster and better at the patterns. God it was a hell of a lot of fun practicing and perfecting those skills though wasn't it?

This brings back so many good memories of hanging out with my friends and just playing Nintendo all weekend long and taking turns playing Tyson’s Punch Out seeing who could get the furthest and then getting our asses kicked by Tyson. I’m 41 years old now and still have never beat Tyson. I miss the old days. I was lucky to be able to grow up during the greatest times the 80’s and 90’s. Wish I could go back and do it all again such a great time for kids back then…

funny I was able to beat tyson but for some weird reason I never beat super macho man, I never understood that one. Last time I played a few years ago I couldn't pass sandman...I was disappointed that the 8 years old me was better at this thing than the 30 years old me :P

What I think is the most impressive part about this run is the fact that Salt wasn't just on a sub-15:20 pace, he was on a *sub-15* pace entering Mike Tyson. If he matched the 2:13 split on Tyson from his 15:34 record, this would have been a 14:58, a time so incredibly out of reach that it might as well have killed the category for years. And this is if it was matched, if Salt instead got a Perfect Tyson where the times are usually between 2:07 and 2:10, it would have been as low as 14:52! That time wasn't achieved until last year!
@yellowdicesam18 күн бұрын
even without a perfect it still killed the category for awhile. salt only beat this a couple years afterwards and every record after that had manippo. still, insane luck

This brings back memories. I grew up in the 80's and early 90's and there was no better time in life to be a kid. Mike Tyson's Punch Out, Mario 1, 2, & 3, Excite Bike, Techmo Bowl 1, & 2, CastleVania, Double Dragon 1, 2, & 3, Ninja Turtles etc etc were all my favorites! I could care less about a PlayStation or an Xbox, there's nothing that will ever compare to the old school 8 bit Nintendo system!!

One of my all-time favorites, spent many an hour playing this. I’ve beat it many times. Something unusual I discovered when fighting Tyson is when he does his “blink punches”, if you time it right you can block then punch several times between each of his, and his life will drain waaaay faster than normal. I could never figure out why he took so much more damage during the blink punches. Man, I miss being a kid.
