God Bless you for being an honest and systematic contractor. It's very hard to come by these days; there are so many con artists who don't even know how to use a drill and making thousands off innocent people! You have a lot of integrity!

To all the viewers ...when I post videos on youtube , I exposed to criticism , some good , some bad. I appreciate all the comments good or bad, they are all constructive to my knowledge. if I don't reply is because I have so many videos on youtube that is almost impossible to reply to all comments. my main Idea is to share my knowledge with the viewers and hope I can help some in the crowd to become a new generation of roofers ( not handyman). I don't get paid to post my videos , I just do it for the fun of it . I think sharing is caring and I do my part ! Greetings to all the roofers and viewers that make this channel interesting. Thanks to all of you ... Eric Garcia exist in KZbin . Thank you very much!

You have some good tips for the rest of us but if I could offer you a couple tips for yourself. I've been roofing for 29 years - a licensed contractor for 19 years. So after you remove all the tiles & clean all the dirt & debris out of the valley & replace the narrow valley metal with 24" valley metal as you said, when it's time to reinstall the tile, cut the top corner of these flat tiles & reshape them so the water flowing down the valley does not hit the top point of each cut tile & get diverted outward but rather the water will hit the relief cut portion of each cut tile & the water will be pushed back to the center of the valley during the rain. Also leave a small gap between the valley tiles so that the water can flow better & carry the small debris that build up over time down the valley & off the roof. This should prevent requiring two layers of felt paper in this area & prevent the valley from leaking ever again. The problems are that the natural shape of the tiles in the valley diverts water outward away from the center of the valley so reshaping the top point of the tiles to better control water flow & leaving a gap to carry out the dirt & small debris should solve the inherent problems of flat tile valleys indefinitely. Let me know if you want an illustration of how to reshape the valley tiles to promote better water flow if you don't understand what I mean. Try it & you'll see for yourself.

Duster Dan I'm just a homeowner handyman. I've used videos to learn how to do lots of stuff. I wasn't able to follow what you meant about cutting the tops of the tiles a certain way to enhance water flow. Is there a link to a video which shows what you are describing? That would be real helpful for us visual learners! Thanks.

I'm not sure why Eric developed the attitude. Some people just aren't real good at accepting advice. Oh well!
@MrThedocholiday
@MrThedocholiday 7 жыл бұрын
It's hard to receive any advice in a world full of critics. Nobody likes to admit when they are wrong, but it can be priceless for those who do. Humility is the most valuable asset to anyone who desires to continue improving their specialty & the sky is the limit for those who have enough humility to receive from others & grow in their understanding. Thanks for your empathy. I appreciate it & I simply prayed for Eric cause I think he's one of the few who care enough to help people when they need things done right on their roofs. Good roofers are very few & far between. Have a blessed weekend friend!

Is a tile roof just set in place? I came here hoping to find out how to remove a small section of my tile roof to install attic vents. I assumed each tile was nailed in place but I guess that's not the case? What keeps them from sliding off the roof? Sorry I'm from the midwest and we dont have tile roofs so this is new to me in Vegas.

How do we keep all the dirt from building up in the valleys. The moss grows on the cold side of my roof, and becomes dirt over time. That dirt builds up in the valley and creates a dam making the water travel out on to the battens and leaks. Should we cut an open valley to help dirt to pass through? Will the edge bent up cure this problem. I believe that they had put pieces of tile on the metal to hold up the tile. That also help to crate the dam effect. Kirk

I'm re-doing one of my valleys and I just want to make sure I do it properly. From what I am seeing it looks like you run the courses of paper from one side up about 10+ inches or so up the other side, weaving it so that the lower courses are under the upper courses. Then you lay the metal valley flashing over the courses. My question is, do you need do adhear the flashing edges to the courses of paper below? I saw a video of a guy in SoCal that did that. Also, I took up one side of the valley and noticed the existing job looks like this: Ice/Water shield running up the valley, metal flashing on top of ice/water shield, then the coures of paper overlap on top of the flashing. The courses of paper are stuck to the ice/water shield that is exposes on either side of the flashing. I am planning on using I/W shield so should my courses overlap the metal flashing or go under the metal flashing... Do what your video shows but add an extra step of I/W shield under the course weaves?

We don't do that in Australia. Personally I use locking sheet metal pliers to turn the ends of the valley back up as usually it's crushed, then install a 50mm bitumen impregnated valley seal between the valley and the tile.

Looking at the end of the video now. That channel looks super tight. Isn't there supposed to be some space in the channel? In my area, there are more than a couple of roof problems. some were solved by just clearing out the channel. It seems the water was meeting some resistance in the channel, and probably puddling up and going over to the side. I'm not a roofer. Not even close. That's just been the experience with a few of the houses here.

cutting the tiles 1.5 inches is a new thing that came out 20 years ago because the new generation of roofers didn't know how to roof the valleys the right way look at old buildings and count how many roofs have open valley? none,why? because it was done by professional roofers not rookies trying to do things right. I also have a tile roof with a valley leak. Mine is about the same length as that shown in the video here. I called two roofing contractors to come to the house and give me estimates to fix it. They both wanted to completely replace the underlayment on the side of the house with the leak and materially expanded the scope of the “needed repair”. One bid was $22,000, the other over $30,000. Needless to say, both bids were rejected. Goes to show you, educate yourself!

you sell them all the time, again cutting the tile is not what i was thought by my mentors and the roofing school, leave that to the rookies. it seems you don't understand that tile is for costmetic look as standing seam metal roofs. you have to hide your metal flashings as much as you can. now when people look at your roof will see a roof tile with a rusted,old line of metal in the middle of the valley. nice!!
