Well here it is, this 1 video promises to be the 1 that gives me the most grief from both electricians and warm roof supporters.
we have used 1mm twin and earth for the lighting circuit and 2.5 twin and earth for the socket radial and heating circuit.
100mm insulation is fitted tight to the underside of the ceiling and this then eliminates any trapped air that may condensate, as is sometimes an issue in a cold roof.

I am a 61 year old qualified spark and I don't see a problem with what you have done, in fact I was particularly impressed with the effort taken to neatly clip the lighting circuit internally and is an example of how it should be done. However as some viewers will take this as an instructional video on how to instal electrics in a garden room, please will you show how you are going to take the supply from the house and point out to your viewers that the installation is notifiable to building control regardless of planning permisssion being required for the garden room itself. I am a great fan of your videos and your work by the way, and your standard of workmanship is clearly second to none

Speaking as a spark with 30 years experience (RAF bases, GCHQ, hospitals etc, I was expecting to be shaking my head (or more likely laughing, given that I enjoy taking the piss), but tbh you are, in theory at least, 100% spot on👍 Taping cables together so you know you've pulled them all through- smart (many sparks don't bother and are then searching for cables after the boarders have left some above the ceiling). Running cables on the outside- smart, as you say, there is more chance of the cables being damaged on the inside than the outside. Ring mains are (apparently) a thing of the past, the UK is unusual in still using them. Having said that, you can very quickly run out of power on a 16amp radial circuit , less so on a 20amp, and obviously much less so on a garden room. Wiring a ring does gives you a chance of rescuing a circuit which has been nailed through (making 2 radials from the ring main). Domestic electrics are pretty simple, you could teach someone to wire one of your rooms in a week. The much more difficult thing is the practical side of things, you wouldn't believe the amount of bad connections that I've come across, mostly done by builders and diy'ers . I'd use 'wago' connectors instead of chocblocs, once you've used them you'll never use anything else. If you are worried about your cable ratings and insulation, you could always use 1.5mm, unless you've got a complicated multigang switch, it won't make your life any harder. I was honestly expecting these video's to be really shoddy and the buildings thrown up in a day, but they do look really well done 👍

I also used 100mm PIR for the roof but I had over ordered on the 50mm PIR for the walls. So, where the spot lights are, I used 2x 50mm boards instead of 1x 100mm and cut out 120mm square for the light on the first board, leaving the board against the osb intact with foil on both sides. I also foil taped any cut/exposed PIR edges. (Overboard I know but was paranoid about cold roof condensation). I ended up paying my electrician to do the roughing out (1st fix). He also used 1mm² for the led lights because apparently its a nightmare to fit 2x 1.5mm² wires into the terminals. Great to see you standing by what you believe to be right. Well done.

@@richmiller540 TT or Seperate earthing can be considered advantageous if the supply is coming from a Pme or TNCS where the neutral is used as the return path for protective earthing as if the neutral was to break or be worked on by the DNO there is no earth fault path so no protective devices would work. The danger could be that there is energy coming into the installation and under a fault condition you would be more likely to be the fault path than athy thing else.

Liam Great videos , but you did not show or mention how the earth is connected and just how important the CPC. Or Earth cable are to firstly protect the cables as well as the lighting and power point connections. You also keep pointing out the RCD protection and the earth plays a large part in the safe working of an RCD. But with todays regs we would now protect individual circuits with RCBO’s. Instead of RCD’s. But the ultimate thought as you say it to always have some body qualified and competent to test the installation if you do it as a DIY protect. Love the video Liam like that you give out as much tech details as possible and the are always a great watch please keep them coming👍.

Great video again Liam and love the smirk you have when talking hot/cold roof and electrics. I did my own build (inc. wiring) and as a competent person had more faith in my own work than someone who may not take time to install with care. As the supply was off a new 18th edition split load RCD it is not advised to add another RCD in the office DB - so I fitted RCBO’s on each circuit to protect. Hager boards are the best!

Hi Will, Great work, I was a sparky turned electrical design engineer. Your install is brilliant. Truth be told it can't be faulted and is compliant with regs. You'd be surprised at the amount of sparks that install cabling without a drip loop. Also it derates the cables current carrying capacity if you run them in insulation. So running them externally makes sense. If you were being OTT - cable guard could be used externally for a little extra time and money but to be honest the cladding is sufficient protection. Only recommendation I'd have is to use 1.5mm instead of 1mm for lighting. Actually nothing to do with the load or current rating but in fact it's because the cabling is so pissy it's often prone to snapping/ damage more easily deteriorates over time. Also it might be worth mentioning that it can in fact be tricky to find sparks to sign of the average DIY'ers work. Most don't like doing it and those that do will charge a premium for doing so. Thanks for sharing. 😁👌👌👌

This won't be a popular comment, but for the sake of circa £200 you can submit something for planning permission and not have to worry about keeping below 2.5m height. This then means that you can avoid any potential issues with a roof like this. I appreciate what you have said and the way that you have said it, to make it clear that it's down to choice, but fundamentally warm roof designs get rid of all of these *potential* issues. You mention the use and that if it was intended for a different use than occasional then you would approach it differently, but that doesn't allow for someone moving house and the new owner wanting to use it more intensively. It sounds inherently negative, but it's not intended to be a slight on your work as your detailing looks great, just that you could save yourself and your clients a potential headache by not worrying about obtaining planning permission (or just dropping the rear section enough to bring the tallest part to 2.5m with a warm roof).

Hi Liam, I am currently building a Garden Room myself after following your videos, which have been a massive help. Can I just ask, do I need a vapour barrier on the internal walls and ceiling if my build will not have any heating in it? I have done a cold roof with soffit vents at the front and back and was planning using Rockwool in the walls and ceiling leaving a 50mm gap in the ceiling for airflow to get to the soffit vents. I read somewhere that if the building does not have heating in it then a vapour barrier will actually trap moisture and the coldness of night time will not be able to cool that down and get rid of it. Not sure if this is accurate. Thanks!

Hey Guys, you mentioned about a different roof for an annex or a dwelling that will have higher occupancy or running water etc... do you have any plans to do a video of one as I'd like a shower/toilet in my build. *Edit* and would a build pack detail the different roof construction? Thanks.

Genuine question as I am doing my own garden room. If you are placing the light switch in the circuit between the fuse board and the fittings, rather than putting the live through the switch and joining the neutral in a junction block, would it be acceptable to use a double pole switch and simply put both live and neutral through the switch? (Sorry if my terminology is a bit off.)

What zones are they running the cables in externally? That cable with only cladding on it, could be subject to extreme weather conditions which PVC isn’t designed for.

Perfect video again Liam in great detail. Luckily my bezzie is a spark so I would get him to do my electrics. 1 question though, when you were describing the 1mm cabling, it was pinned to the OSB and you mentioned with the cedar on the outside that would give you 68mm depth (9m.56s into vid) and you have a drip loop. Could the 2.5mm cable not be tucked under both Slate laths at either the top or the bottom though to still give you the 68mm depth rather than pinned to the timber to only now give you 43mm (20m.33s into vid) depth once cladding is on? Forgive my ignorance, I'm not a spark (or a moaner or hater), just a chap who has bought a build pack from you and wanting to pick up as much info as possible :-) Cheers buddy and keep up the amazing work

14. 40 sec Could you not cut a circular hole for the downlight. This would halve the insulation needed to be removed. Also to ensure the insulation is tight up against the underside of the OSB, and remains in place, could some glue be used?

As an electrician, not too bad. But by running the cables on the external side you've actually put them out of zone, technically they are only permitted on the other side if the wall is 100mm or less where the zone get mirrored to the other side of the wall

I think the only way to do that is have more insulation as Liam says, so you would ultimately need to increase the height of the joist to give a 50mm void above, then essentially turning it into a cold roof I think (I am no builder lol). In theory a 6x2 (150m high would allow for 100mm flush from bottom of joist, same cut out for lights he shows in the video, then 50mm space above which you would need to vent front and back so any possible moisture that went through would then vent through the draft, but again its another 25mm of space you need to factor on the overall 2.5m under permitted, and everything is a challenge. extra weight of the 6x2 also probably would need to be factored - btw, I am probably wrong with everything I have written here so don't shoot me... I am going to be doing my own and currently deciding on this approach or the hybrid, I like the idea of a warm roof but with 5x2 + insulation on top and 2 layers of OSB is just eating too much into the 2.5m overall.
@ianfinch1522
@ianfinch1522 3 жыл бұрын
@@mgdew that’s exactly the approach I’ve been looking at using 150 mm rafters and in theory the pir could be increased in size to leave a 50 mm air space which is vented from the front and rear soffit vents through out. ( noggins at 90mm ) then I’ve found pre made light box’s to fit in the insulation (sealing the void) then vapour barrier then plaster board. Using doors at 1950 mm this stays under the 2500 permitted development. Liam has been doing this for many years so fully trust his methods but there’s lots of horror stories of failed systems from other companies on here.

Electrically sound if unconventional. All I would add is to run the cables slightly up hill when penetrating the insulation, so condensation and any other moisture does not run into the sockets (water penetration through the cladding). Like the explanation of the build.
