We had a pond SO FULL OF THIS STUFF ( 3 ponds, actually ) so I made up Barley Straw flakes (2 ea) placed in fine mesh onion bags and let them float around gathering the string alage. Within 3 weeks, I removed them and crystal clear ! Keep a few made up in case you see it coming back. Teather them to where you can get to. MUST USE BARLEY STRAW ONLY. They do sell a barley conditioner you can pour into the main filter also. Does not hurt fish. I WAS AMAZED at how quickly it cleared.

You’ve probably considered this, but what about a shade canopy, for a short term solution while working to eradicate the string algae. Like a shade sail to help with the algae( not permanent structure). I have 2 small garden ponds and an acre pond. In the smaller ponds the water lilies definitely help with the sun. In the larger pond , it’s almost 45 yrs old, all the trees around help to stop algae growth. Love your channel, very inspirational, thank you.

Lovvvvve the artichokes! They look so perfectly in keeping with the botanical aesthetic. It makes the Hartley look like a dream estate garden sketch! All great garden structures have some interesting plantings like that; and artichokes are such a classic and ancient symbol of garden hope and bounty and prosperity. The Hartley needs drama and substance or it could quickly dink out and go, “golf course” look. I also applaud keeping the banking, potted evergreens - those and the artichokes or something equally substantial - it makes your greenhouse look like it wasn’t just plunked down there. It’s so incredibly beautiful and watching it evolving is so inspirational!

I understand how you feel about the algae in the pond. We have a pond, and also had awful string algae for several years. We now have a clear pond and I love it. I was just about ready to get rid of the pond due to the algae. Once we had some shade trees get big enough to shade part of the pond, and also water lilies, our pond is clear. We do not have to use any chemicals in the pond, and the fish and frogs love it. I know it tests your patience, but it will eventually clear up.

We have a water feature in our yard and we never had an issue with algae until they started developing the land behind our property for houses. I believe it was the dust that was being kicked up from the construction that was getting into the water that caused the alge. Since the construction has finished the algae issues have almost disappeared.

Laura you are right, artichokes look so classy and really suit that green house. That Hartley needs something very different. What about two handkerchief trees, (Davidia involucrata) they are something special , will defiantly give shade the size you buy, I dont think you need something to blend in, I think you need something that is so different, and striking that it makes a real statement. The Hartley deserves that. Gwendoline

For the pond- it needs more surface cover maybe another water lily or some annual floating plants like water lettuce or hyacinth. In the uk we say sround 1-2 thirds of the surface covered to help prevent algae growth. Plus who doesn’t love beautiful pond plants, also what about lovely bog plants for the shallower water I.e marsh marigold king cup or the double one. Get more pond plants and you’ll be winning not just lillies, bog plants for the shallower water too!

Making this area magical (and with your talents, the change would be akin to the transformation of the pond area) is not for the neighbors - or the cows; it's a hidden, secret paradise for YOU, and the potential is limitless....

The shade would be dappled so you’d still get a decent amount of light on cloudy days and the multi stemmed white drunks would look fabulous coordinating with the white of the greenhouse.

Brick Patio water feature idea --- have you considered a low bowl fountain that has shooting or arching water making the architectural feature instead of an actual structure in the middle of the fountain? Look up the Mould Fountain NYC and imagine it w/out the tiered structure in the middle -- just the arching water from the low bowl. You could design the water spray to be as full or sparse as you would like and when the fountain is off, there is nothing above the level of the low bowl.

I too boarded the train on Tiger Eye Sumac. Beautiful it is a beautiful tree. “Tiger Eyes has no significant pest problems. It does sucker a bit, but not nearly as much as the larger form of sumac” says the Minnesota State Horticultural Society back in 2015. Another forum mentions this back in 2004. “Tough and easy to grow, Tiger Eyes™ differs from other sumac in a number of ways. The most obvious being its' small size, reaching a manageable height and width of just 6 feet. Another major difference is that it spreads slowly and should not be considered invasive.” Other growers put that information in the Tiger Eyes description; how beautiful it was with very little suckering. As a landscape designer, I believed that information and used in several designs! It wasn’t until I actually planted one in my garden that I realized how wrong they were! Oh my god!! It took over my entire border! When we finally pulled it out, roots went on forever and they weren’t exactly small! And my border was not big to begin with! To this day, I’m still finding roots every now and then and I have to eradicate them as soon as I see them! So for the facts, I totally agree with Laura with all the incorrect information given to us! Folks not plant this in your garden! Laura, I totally am sympathetic to your situation and hope that you can get it under control. The foliage may be pretty but all the work that goes with it makes it very ugly indeed!! Hang in there! (By the way, I did remove it, cut back as far as I could and put in a large container. Now it can live its life happily quite contained!

In regards to the pond and dream stream, a couple of things, 1. Do not install that 2nd ion gen. That amount of copper being released is not recommended. One on 10 is fine. Not two on 10. 2. Do not feed the fish again til the algae is gone. It'll make them eat the algae faster. Also, watch the amount you feed them because their waste is part of the balance. 3. Net out what you can daily until it is under control. 4. Pond plants. More pond plants. 5. Go ahead with the Dream stream. The larger the body of water is, the easier it is to control the balance. The smaller, the more difficult. Adding the stream will increase the total volume of water. 6. You need more flow and water movement. The waterfall is supposed to oxygenate the water, but if it's not strong enough, it does not turn up the water enough when it falls into the pond. Your pump should be variable. Try turning it up to the higher setting. Plus, the Dream Stream will be adding another waterfall into the pond, so that'll help. 7. Contact Brian or Ed directly. They can confirm all this for you. I'm sure Chris is a nice fellow. But his idea of adding a second ion gen shows his lack of experience and knowledge. Hang in there. Don't get discouraged. Trust me. It'll all be worth it once the pond finds its stride. Thanks for the long tour. Everything looks gorgeous. ❤

It is nice to see a married couple enjoy each other and not trying to one up the other.

Be careful! It made me want a cat, and one showed up! Two years ago. My sweet girl. Then her brother showed up too. We saw another sibling but he didn’t stick around. Then she got pregnant before we could get her in to spay, so now I have three inside too. I get followed around no matter where I am 🤣 I love it!

Russell truly adores Laura ❣️ you can see it especially in her sit down videos. He climbs up by whatever means available and just stares at her lovingly while waiting for his pets ✨❣️✨
