How do you know if you’ve got a hardy hibiscus? The ones I bought came in standard black buckets, not this Proven Winner ones. I know that tells you nothing but was hoping you could explain hardy vs non-hardy or whatever.

@@ChrisJ-mf7cj Hardy is another word for perennial. When buying look at tags. The annuals that do not come back every year would say they are tropical hibiscus. You can look at temperature rating on tags as well.

🏡. Hi Laura , Thank you for this lovely , simple tutorial on our beautiful hardy hibiscus ! I have been so consumed with worry about the high PH of my soil in Zone 5a . I have conditioned all the soil ground with composted , organics , used biotone and your instructions . There is so much talk about " this & that fertilizers" we should be adding weekly that I scrolled back to your updates just to be sure . I appreciate all that you do for all of us ❤ Taking the worry and fear about starting a garden is so much easier when your teacher is " You are the down to earth in the place where God has planted you to Inspire and remove the fear of failure from our hearts & minds in times like these 🕯️. We are listening & learning from every zone , everywhere 🌐 . Thankfulness & Blessings to You and Yours for all their hard work , sweat , and brain fog which brings your beautiful landscape to adoring fans . Could you expand on the roses with the candy crush hibiscus , and the tiny breath like perennial where you landed ? It's so pretty ! I was concerned about the maintenance on those two plants ?

Had to chuckle when you said " it is a slow starter in the spring...you may think it is dead but it is not". We planted a Cherry Choco Latte variety last year. Gorgeous flower. Cut it back early spring. Nothing happened all May (we are Zone 5) even tho' it was a warmer spring than usual. So dug it up...roots looked good...so just in case it might be okay, we put it in a pot, watered it regularly. And sure enough mid June it started to sprout. LOL It is tall and full of buds (still in the pot). We had replaced with a Butterfly Bush so now have to find a good spot for it. Thanks so much for the great information! I am learning so much.

I just adore the huge blooms on the perennial hibiscus! I planted my first ones 4 years ago in planters because I didn't know where I wanted them. Unfortunately, they did not survive our harsh winter in the pots. I'm sure they would have been okay if I had planted them directly into the ground. Last year, after seeing a 'Starry Starry Night' Hibiscus, I decided to try again. The foliage is a dark maroon with swirled pink and white flowers, it's absolutely gorgeous! In spite of my neighbor spraying weeds with herbicide, which made all of the leaves curl, I cut the damaged foliage off and now it's all budded up and about to burst into bloom! YAY!

My all time favorite is Midnight Marvel. The dark foliage and deep red blooms put on a stunning display. Over the years I’ve worked in garden centers and have gained a lot of plant knowledge, which I’ve passed on to friends & family. I have 8 hibiscus in my yard and I absolutely love them! They don’t put on their show until late summer, but it’s worth the wait.

I think that would need to be another channel..Laura likes the English style. The west is greener than the east coast because they are pulling from the world's underground aquifers and irrigating like nothing I have ever seen. Even her favorite England does not irrigate; especially lawns. We on the East coast rely on what falls from the sky and of course rain is not able to recharge the aquifers in the amounts being pulled. We are living on borrowed rain like borrowed money and all good things will come to an end. I do not begrudge her as I also love this look but I do worry that she is being an 'influencer' to people across the country/world who will all think irrigation is normal in the middle of a desert.

@@karenvknight6516 I think you mean the Pacific Northwest where Laura lives. The West also includes the Southwest which is basically all desert and chaparral. But I agree - probably better to look for a channel based in that climate rather than ask Laura to speculate. I do wish there were as fantastic channels like this in every climate zone though!

Actually they live as she herself says high desert not pacific NE - that is the area along the coast that is normally known for its mild rainy weather but this year got that several weeks of extreme heat. I think there is a nursery called High Country Gardens in CO that would be a good resource for folks who live west of the Plains

Hi Laura, Aaron & everyone else. I'm glad u did this vlog. I bought a hardy hibiscus earlier this spring. It looks nice good, health, & bushy. It's just starting to bud up. I'm so excited. I realized a few weeks ago, I should have planted it in the full sun. The only reason I didn't is b/c we live in West Texas. The sun & heat are awful on new plants. I planted it in part sun area. I was think of moving it in the fall just a few feet forward, but was afraid to do so. Watching your vlog, I realized I can move it & will move this weekend. Also, don’t let anyone give u grief about calling your Hartley a Hartley. If by any chance I won the lottery & was able to buy a Hartley, I would call my Hartley "my dream come true Hartley" & would repeat it as much as possible. Idk if anyone didn't like it. Thanks for all your information & entertainment. I love watching you two. 💜

We live in Utah also high dessert, zone 5-7 (depending on who you ask). We are in a severe drought and can only water twice a week. Most lawns are brown. I have candy crush and a red one that I don’t remember the name, but they only get watered twice a week from over head sprinklers. We have been over 100 degrees for a long time. I was so worried about them, but they are happy and massive. Love these tough, beautiful plants!

Seeing how much drip irrigation your area uses just to keep plants alive makes me very thankful we get on average 38 inches of rain each year. We don’t have a well, and it would be very expensive if we had to supplement so much water. I am jealous of your dry heat though!

I bought a hibiscus from Home Depot in late Spring on a whim and then it started dying. I happened to watch one of your old videos on hibiscus where you mentioned they were bog plants and liked lots of moisture and realized that was my problem. I assumed because they’re (in my mind) “hot weather” plants that they liked to be drier. Just have to say, THANK YOU! This has been the best performing plant in my garden all season and one of the easiest to care for. I just wish I kept the tag so I knew exactly which variety I got!

It's good to know it can grow that big in one season. I'm guessing it will die back to the ground every year for us. We usually have a handful of -20 degree days in the winter.
