omg, I'm only 6 minutes in & the mere thought of there not being a Garden Answer channel someday got me a bit overwhelmed. lol I've been watching you since the townhome backyard & all the succulent videos! I love the gardening encouragement! I went from a "black thumb" to a huge succulent & indoor plants collection thriving to a few outdoor plants surviving to planting a successful veggie garden the past 3 years to now also planting our own privacy hedge (108 shrubs!) and a mini fruit tree orchard! I would have never done any of that without your channel! There's NO OTHER CHANNEL that even comes close to yours, sorry other channels, but you know...💛

💯 I’ve said it before on here but I’m technically houseless.. I live with one sister (as I’ve been house hunting for two years but this market… 😵‍💫🙄) & I garden at my other sisters house down the street & around the corner. She thought I was nuts investing in the plants & compost & mulch & warned me she had given it up years ago and had no interest in maintaining or the upkeep of anything I planted but 3 years later things look beautiful & when I do find my own yard one day (hopefully 😥) I will take all the beautiful things I’ve planted with me. Oh- but I HAD to do it watching Laura & GA.. I just couldn’t keep watching without getting my hands in the earth. 😊♥️

Aaron. You are SO MUCH MORE than a 'gardening channel'. You are a lifestyle channel. You are an inspirational channel. You are a motivational channel. How many of us start our day watching your video, getting our kick start to get moving. (Raising my hand, lol). I agree you need a vacation, but don't ever say you're 'just a gardening channel'. Also, I agree with Laura about covering yourself up when working outside. I always have on long pants, long sleeved shirts and boots when I work outside, but I wear white or light colors. Dark colors attract mosquitos and other biting insects whereas white tends to not attract them. As much as I love gardening, Georgia gardening can be a challenge because of heat, humidity and mosquitos/biting flies. My brother is always joking about inventing a type of moonsuit that I would wear that would protect me from all of it, yet be light and flexible enough to garden in, lol. Bet THAT would make some money...

I know someday it will have to end (or at least go weekly) as we all age and move on to other areas of our lives. A fun type of short term vacation would be to run up or over to a hot springs for a weekend. We used to go over to Lolo MT in the winter because it was so fun to be able to swim in the warm water while it snowed.😊

Their comments about clothing and the heat reminded me of what they told us when I was in the Peace Corps in India. We found that wearing long sleeves were actually cooler. We wore a very loose long sleeve top and drawstring pants. They allowed air to circulate and wick away the moisture.

I think you have potential for being influencers outside the gardening world. Where I live, in the South, we tend to plant hydrangeas in the shade and they love it. I was shocked when I first started watching your videos and you’d mention to plant hydrangeas in FULL sun. I was like excuse me? No ma’am 😂 It’s so interesting (and fun!) to see how different areas do things completely different and still have similar results.

While I'm transitioning between jobs I've adopted a split day schedule on hot days (Zone 7A in NJ) - get up early and take the dog out, do some outdoor work or workout ending around 10am. Then after lunch I'll take a nap during the hot part of the day and then go back out to get some work done once the back yard is in shade and its getting cooler (usually 5-6 pm). If I don't eat dinner until 9pm it doesn't matter since I won't be tired until closer to midnight after the nap.

Kind of like the siesta routine they do in Spain. I thought it was so smart to close stores and let everyone rest in the few hottest hours of the afternoon. Then at night, so many people go out, eat late, and stay up until midnight.

Garden Answer loads up around 9:30pm where I live in Australia. We’ve had such a temperate winter so far that the leaves on many of my deciduous tress have only just coloured up, and my bulbs are popping up everywhere. It’s so hard because you always inspire me and I have to stop myself from buying any flowers at the moment as I know the frosts are coming.

I love your channel and I’ve learned a lot from You. I don’t want this to sound rude or anything but if I may, I would like to say that people who work in the fields ( like my parents did so I. An become a doctor) do not get accustomed to that heat; they just don’t complain about it. They did it out of necessity. It’s different than gardening as a hobby. I know when I’m out in the garden I must stop and come in the house bc the heat is just unbearable. As beautiful as the arborvitae hedge is, it is just deer food here in SK! You should install drip or overhead sprinklers in the greenhouse! Japanese Beatles look like burnt orange lady bugs, correct? (That’s what I’ve always thought was a Japanese beatle ) I have Beatles on ALL my flowers this year and I don’t know what they are or what they are doing exactly.. the don’t look like Japanese beatles & all the damage on my plants are most likely from the dang earwigs that are ALSO on all of my plants & pots.. ugh.. first year with insect pressure & it’s stressing me out. I spray with Capt Jacks dead bug weekly.. maybe I should increase this ?

Your fans would still be here if you took a two week break in the winter! Go for it! Making memories with your children is the most important thing. In the overall scheme of things children are only young for a short period of time. If you felt the need you could record some videos ahead of time to be released while you're on vacation. But again, making memories both big and small is one of the most important things to be doing while they are growing up.

We're in zone 4b in WI and my husband tells me we have to go down 5 feet for a frost free water line. Also, I see the hollyhocks live on and are beautiful behind Aaron. And finally, Samantha is such a hoot. You have to capture more of her delight as it brings such joy to the world.

For the zone question last week I might be able to clarify why it’s actually preferred by some growers and retailers to just put the lower zone. I was trained to garden by a horticulturist trained in California. A lot of the Proven Winners tags and tags in general are tailored to the Central and Eastern part of the US where there is summer rain and higher humidity and tropical conditions that just don’t really exist on the West Coast. This makes sense because that’s most of the country but it becomes trickier in California and the Western states in general. So when a tag says for zones 4 to zone 8 that’s for the East Coast where humidity plays in. When selling plants on the west coast, specifically California, it can be confusing to customers, especially new or novice gardeners, to see a garden centre putting out a plant that has an upper limit on the tag when that zone is below your growing zone. People would routinely question the horticulturist I trained with why he had plants that were only rated up to zone 7 or zone 8 when we are a zone 9 and explaining such a complicated topic nuanced topic of hardiness zones to a novice gardener just makes the whole upper limit, that most of the time doesn’t apply in California, more frustrating for garden centre staff with no real benefit. Also, from a plant physiology point of view, a good number of the plants that have an upper zone limit on their tag are only really limited by the upper zone on the eastern side of the country and not the western side. Traditional lilacs that supposedly only grow in zones colder than 7/8 grow perfectly well in my zone 9 Northern California. Peonies also grow perfectly fine even though they’re only rated up to a zone 8. I know of one bulb company that puts their zone limits with geographic specificity (something like Zone 3-7E,10W to indicate that it’s zone 3-7 on the eastern half of the country, but its hardy from 3-10 on the western half). In short, it’s really complicated, most tags are made for the humid summer rainfall climates, there’s no one way to account for the various microclimates of the West other than Sunset Western zones, but those aren’t really used anymore.

Thank you for this explanation! I grew up in California and have lived and gardened in western Oregon now for 30 years. This makes so much sense to me. I remember when I realized that “shade” planting in Oregon is very different from “shade” planting in CA because our sun is much less intense here than where I used to garden. Trial and error…and walking my neighborhood to see how plants behave in this area is the only way I’ve been able to figure out what works.

Yes, there are machines that will lay the sheets of mulch with drip lines underneath, or drip lines alone, etc.

Frost question - The frost line for Minnesota is 80 inches, Wisconsin is 65ish inches. You can not dig once the ground freezes. Our houses have a special faucet attached to the house so that the water runs back inside to keep from freezing - you HAVE to disconnect the hose for them to work or you WILL have a broke pipe. How do I know that one? This Georgia Girl did not get a memo on this when I moved and yep... i had to replace the outside faucets. Each state should have a moving manual. :)

Here in SK we are zone 3b. We had to dig out our well in January 2021 as the pump went and could get it to 'quick release' it was expensive due to deep frost.

Was just about to type the 80" for northern MN in Zone 3a here where I am. We do not run water outside during the winter months. First frost is usually mid September, last frost is usually mid May. Temps can drop to -40 or lower during the winter months (actual temp, that is, don't ask about windchills, lol). Winters are tough, but we have such a love and appreciation for the green and growing summer months! :)

Had the same cat issue, wanting in or out throughout the night and disrupting my sleep. For nine years I tolerated it. Not since April. When I go off to bed I put my cat outside. I am sleeping soooo much better! I highly recommend it!!! Just for more information he has four safe places around the yard to be away from predators and In from the weather.

I have tried growing roses in the past with no luck. The instructions on pruning, type of roses, etc has me excited to try again. Maybe a different spot in the garden. TX 8b. blistering summer heat here but 13 mature trees on 1/3 acre. I should be able to find roses 'happy place'. Thank you both for sharing your experiences and knowledge.
