How to Build a Cattle Panel Garden Arch Trellis

A garden arch trellis can add beauty to your garden and is a great support for many plants. It is simple to construct using a cattle panel and metal T-posts. Deciding how wide to construct it and high high you want it are important factors; Gardener Scott demonstrates different widths and how they look. Securing the panels to vertical supports reduces instability and swaying while creating vertical sides to the arch. It is advisable to use a post drive for pounding in the T-posts.

I did five cattle panels with 2 8-ft posts for each side of each panel. I use galvanized t-post connectors to connect the panel to the posts and galvanized wire to connect each of the panels together. Perhaps a bit overkill but I shouldn't have to worry about it for quite a while. If you do use zip ties, Make sure they're rated for UV exposure or you'll be replacing them when they break.

Use Black cable ties. They will blend in better. Also around Xmas the big box store sell Green cable ties. BTW, I rent a trailer at a ranch store ($15) to bring home my numerous panels

I built my two side by side hoop trellises 108" long (2 Panels) 8' wide on the bottom with 76" headroom (I am 67" tall) , there is 4' walkway between the two trellises on the outside, I installed my 2' x 4' x 8" deep raised beds on the inside of the trellis and attached the cattle panel to the outside of the raised bed. I did this so I can cover the trellis with plastic film in winter and use the hoop trellis for a greenhouse. I can grow winter greens in the beds and container veggies and other plants in the 6' x 9' space between the raised beds .

I have 14 raised garden beds (4' x 3' each). I created this trellis with one end attached to the OUTSIDE of the boxes on either side of the pathway, so the tunnel is over the path rather than over the beds. This way I have easy access to the beds and a shady arch over the path. Adding more this spring! Thank you so much for this well-done and informative vid.

I was concerned about not being able to easily access things in the middle of the bed if the trellis was placed on the inside, I think the middle is the perfect placement for my plan. Great instructional video, thank you. I have several arches at 4, 5, and 6 foot widths. All are on the ground and secured with rebar or threaded rod with about 40 inches above ground. I held the arch in place with cinder blocks while I installed the supports, then added the raised beds. Some are outside as yours are but one 12' arch has 2' beds inside the arch with a 2' walkway. It maximizes my limited space and I can grow lettuce in the shade of the beans in the warmer summer months. I love the welcoming look of the arch. One of the best uses for cattle panels I've seen comes from Old Alabama Gardener. He uses t-posts and chain link top rail to make a T-shaped trellis for really tall plants so they grow up the vertical part then they can run across the horizontal. I used 6' rebar pounded in to 3' and slipped top rail over it instead of t-posts and it's held up well. The vertical piece of top rail is pounded in to my preferred height of 5'9". I cut the 10.5' top rail to 7' for the vertical and 3.5' for the horizontal and ran it down the middle of a 2' raised bed. Works great for my garden. I like the clean lines of the metal. Amazon sells a smaller drill auger for those t post i got one and boy does it save time. I have hard rocky soil and the auger still dug its way through. it cost 15 $. I set two post in about 5 mins just today.

Thank you for your step by step instruction, it definitely helped me with information to achieve my ideas for my own garden. The only thing I would add is better products for securing things. I live in the southwest, the sun and heat is brutal during the summer months. Anything made of plastic dry rots, it feels like in days, but by the end of a summer season anything " made of plastic" becomes brittle and breaks. Do not get me wrong, it doesn't decompose, it just turns into tiny itty bitty little pieces of plastic. I would encourage people in general to use other things to secure everything.

Thanks for this great instructional video. As you mentioned, transportation of the cattle panel would be challenging if a person does not have access to a truck, trailer, or delivery service. I have some 12 gauge fencing. Do you think that would be sturdy enough for cucumbers or pole beans with a tee post on each side of my 4 ft. wide fencing?

Hi, Tricia. 12-gauge fencing can be perfect for lightweight plants like cucumbers and beans. I would use two T-posts on each side of the fencing and limit the height so it doesn't get top heavy. Cattle panels can handle watermelons and heavy perennial vines, but for typical garden plants you should have success with the lighter gauge fence.

Hi Scott. First off, THANK YOU for the way you teach. You do such a great job putting the process into manageable and understandable baby steps. I live in the Pacific Northwest where the sun doesn't go up and over my beds as much as it shines at an angle from the south as it moves from east to west. I haven't figured out whether to incorporate an arch that runs east/west or north/south in order to maximize on the sun exposure. Any thoughts?

The arch in this video is east-west and I planned the plants in the beds to take into account the angle of the sun. The north side will be mostly shaded and the plants need to be able to grow with less light. I'm planning another north-south arch and will have more flexibility in choosing plants.

Replacing the white cable ties with wire was a good move. The white cable ties are not UV rated for outside use. Something I had to learn in installing cableTV for over 20 years. The white would have broken within just a few months. Even the black would have become brittle within about a year, and broken off. Wire was your best bet. The cable ties would be great for holding it in place temporarily, but not as a permanent solution.

As usual great stuff! You mentioned gourds, melons, and cucumber. Are there any hardy perennials that would climb a trellace? So the plants will survive a winter and keep going, giving lots of fruit?

Thanks! There are a number of perennials depending on your zone. I planted Trumpet Vine this year and will add honeysuckle later. The vegetable vines die with frost and are treated as annuals.

I made my first raised bed (thanks to you) and I plan on making 2 more. I didn't realized that cucumbers needed a trellis so I watched this video. My challenge is my backyard is narrow so my raised bed is long way so to put a vertical arch, it would be connecting the width (44 1/2") of one raised bed to another. I guess I would have to cut the cattle panel to make it fit. What do you think?

You don't have to trellis cucumbers, I just find that can be a good way to get more plants in a smaller space. They can grow six feet long and take up a lot of space. For your narrow backyard, a trellis may be best and it doesn't need to be as tall as this arch.

For very heavy fruit like watermelon a sling is needed. For cucumbers, straight neck squash, gourds and small melons, I don't use a sling at all. The stem is strong enough. As many of them ripen the stem begins to dry and weaken so they can fall, so it's important to check regularly and harvest before that happens. I'll do a video on all of that, but it won't be ready until everything is growing in my garden. Thanks.
