After more than 40 years of growing my own vegetables I am still looking for tips to improve my gardening I love this video. You explain every detail very clearly and wisely. One thing that I plan to do next year is to include some flowers in my veggie garden to attract more pollinators to my cucumber plants. This year was the first time that I did staggered planting of my indeterminate English cucumbers. 3 weeks after planting my first set of seedlings that I raised indoors, I put more seeds in between the already growing vines on each side of my arched trellis. After watching your video I realized that I should have planted the seedlings on just one side of the trellis and later planted the seeds directly in the ground on the other side of the arched trellis. Regardless of my mistake, I am enjoying a second harvest. I am doing the same staggering with my pole green beans.

Try borage! I hardly ever saw bees in my garden (other pollinators but not bees) until I planted borage. Now they're everywhere and everything is well-pollinated. Borage is also edible and medicinal.

I want to echo others' comments that this was the most thoroughly explained video on the growing habit of cucumbers. I knew there were two basic types of cucumbers, but I never understood what the difference between a slicing and a pickling cucumber was. Equipped with the information you have given me I'll have more success in the garden.

i learned a ton from your video; pinching out new branches, keeping lower branches and leaves off the ground, growing vertically, improving air circulation. Perfect timing. We had a downpour of rain today and the cukes got knocked down. Now I realize that the reason they fell is because of the over growth of the suckers. They are short enough still that it is fixable. Thanks Scott. Really appreciate all your info.

Thanks Scott for the first video I’ve seen that explains and shows, the benefits of pruning cucumbers. In the past I gave up pruning down low, as I was just guessing, and ended up with a lot of short growth flopping on the ground. Apart from the short growth looking sick and not producing much fruit, it’s far harder to pick the produce.

Terrific video, thank you! I'll certainly be applying all these ideas. You've also answered my puzzle: why, in last year's diabolically cold London summer, did I get only *male* flowers on my squashes - because the plant never managed to grow large enough for female ones!

Wow, fantastic timing! I just planted lemon cucumber and market more 76 cucumber seeds 4 days ago. I planted both of these earlier this year and just did OK. Thank goodness for a video telling me it is okay to prune cucumbers!! This year I am growing vertical using the cow panel method. I am using an Aluminet 40% shade cloth this year and I am noticing the most prolific growth ever in my cucumbers. Despite directing vines to the cow panel they are crowding neighboring plants. I already have cukes - and so many flowers! Low growing, flowering herbs, such as thyme, might be good to grow next to the cucumbers for pollination as well.

It's easy to get more cucumbers than one knows what to do with. My favorites are the Asian/Japanese cucumbers, they are so fresh and crunchy tasting, but also juicy. I find that some of the best varieties of vegetables/fruits are the Japanese varieties.

The Japanese cukes are the best for me too. Crunchy, long, excellent taste... drizzle them with vinaigrette dressing -or- marinade them in the dressing first thing and eat for dinner. Glorious cukes! However, any irregular watering of this veggie can cause cukes to be bitter. It will ruin the taste and you'd toss them to the pigs. This year, I decided to grow Suyo Long and Lemon cukes -- the latter as an insurance. The Lemon variety is prolific and I harvest everyday to enjoy the crunch and the fresh taste!

I do not have enough bees in my area to polinate anything...so I pollinate my cucumbers myself by rubing the stamin of the male flower onto the pistal of the female ...I carefully pluck away the male flower petals and hold onto just the center stamen then I insert that into the female center and rub it around a bit..the pollen gets transfered and i ALWAYS get cucumbers that way. Bees are becoming more and more scarce so this tip might help some of your growers.. It helps my crop 100%

Dear G.S, Peace and thank you for the videos. Just an update. I've got tons of aphid eggs (I think) on my cucs, but my cucumber season is coming to an end here. There are tons of tiny, black dots and the leaves are all dying, but that's normal for August. I only had enough for five pickling jars this year, but I did see a few different types of lady bugs towards the end of the season. My two good things this time are that my vanilla orchids, which I had on life support for almost a year, are much healthier and happier. My second is that I was able to start my first gallon of watermelon wine yesterday! I even made the yeast, and I used mostly things from my garden to make it. I also pickled some watermelon rind!
