My best tip is use more compost and leaf mulch to improve your soil and grow veggies on it. It tastes so good! I don't even use any fertilizer at all. We are growing organic veggies in an acre (RTP Area). 30+ years back we were farming very naturally using cow & goat manure without any fertilizers. We all need to get back on that.

@@DaisyCreekFarms I've read many articles saying it's a great benefit to plants. The only cautionary advice given was this: Old aquarium water is fantastic for plants, especially if you have fish that create a lot of waste like goldfish. The only thing you have to watch for is to avoid watering house plants with fish water if you've added any of these to the tank: aquarium salt (or any), any medication, or any chemical, including pH adjusters or algae killers etc. The last two generally aren't safe for aquariums anyway. pH up is fine if you know exactly what you are doing, but pH down (acid) and algae ridding chemicals (pesticides) are generally more harmful than good, for both your fish and houseplants. (I am going to guess you're not using any of these chemicals either 😅)

Your grandfather and mine would have gotten along very well. My grandfather died 2 days before his 105th birthday. He broke his hip went into the hospital and caught pneumonia and died. My grandfather taught us all how to grow all types of plants What they call organics now we just called it growing all natural. We didn't use chemical fertilizers ours was all natural and we did not spray poison on the plants or anywhere else.

Your grandfather lived a great life. Yes they would have gotten along very well. True, lot of people says organic is a scam or a marketing technique, however organic is just natural, and how our ancestors have been growing food. Now food contains toxins and poisons from fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides. Glyphosates and harmful pesticides are detected in the fruit and vegetables that people consume. Your grandfather was wise as well like mine!

Sorry from a Master market Gardener. Lots of bad info on this. Never use potting soil for health veggies. Takes a lot of nutrients to counter the wood chips in potting soil. Keeping soil over 30 percent moisture while plants are young courses shallow roots the main reason plants can't handle hot stretches. I grow in sand and don't have to water at all most years others start in August. I only get 40 inches a year

@@Kay-xi9kv not clay anywhere around. All soil is a mix of sand and clay with organics. Mine sugar sand. When I lived in Arizona with 10 inches I didn't have to water as much as most do here with 40 to 50. Just gotta get the carbon in soil to hold moisture

40 inches? That's four years here my friend. Where Jag is gets about 19 inches. I'm farther south in the same zone, 9B, and we typically get 10-11 inches. Actually most of his information is spot on for the valley we live in.

@DaisyCreekFarms
@DaisyCreekFarms 3 ай бұрын
@Andrew-sanders Thank you for the comment, appreciate a Master Market Gardener on the channel. Watering depends on many factors, temperature, soil, rainfall, types of plants you are growing. Some plants like moist soil while others like to dry out in between watering. I have complete info on watering alone on some of my videos on the channel. The info on watering in this video is to keep it simple for beginner gardeners who are starting out. Many beginners gardeners end up killing their plants if they are told to let the soil dry out for prolonged period. In the video I mention checking the soil 6 inches deep with the moisture meter to encourage deep watering. Top/surface soil will get dry when checking moisture at 50% at 6 inches. This encourages roots to grow deep. Hope this clarifies things.

Synthetic fertilizer is chemical fertilizer
@occiditumbra8493
@occiditumbra8493 3 ай бұрын
Synthetic fertilizers are created in labs and used to feed the plants. Organic fertilizers are uses to feed the soil. Both of them are created with chemical elements ( see the periodic table of Mendeleev). The proper name to use would be synthetic fertilizer and not chemical fertilizer. Both types of fetilizers use the same chemical elements. And they are not dangerous for human consumption.
@DaisyCreekFarms
@DaisyCreekFarms 3 ай бұрын
I understand the terminology. All synthetic fertilizers are chemical fertilizers but not all chemical fertilizers are synthetic. That's why I said chemical fertilizers as to provide distinction between organic matter (compost and manure) vs chemical fertilizers. Now if you want to go into water is chemical, sure, you have a technical point but that was not the point of the distinction for people to understand the use of fertilizers vs using organic matter to feed your soil mentioned in the video.
@occiditumbra8493
@occiditumbra8493 3 ай бұрын
@@DaisyCreekFarms, yes, and all organic fertilizers are also chemicals. They use the same chemical elements as synthetic fertilizers. This is why I consider that the proper terminology should be used. To avoid that people get confused. Thank you.
