Very useful tips. I liked your great grand father's knowledge. I keepy Turmeric dried leaves in compost and as a mulch. I don't get any insects. It's not easy gardening. Almost more than three years I am doing gardening chemical free. Thanks for sharing this video.

Thank you Jag. I was wondering where you've been. I planted one sweet potato in a 40 gallon container in Feb here in Florida. I water in the morning and by mid-day the leaves start wilting from the heat. I mulched with straw. Maybe I need to water in the evening too?

Where i live the ticks are so bad I'm bites head to toe. They're in the garden. I finally gave in and sprayed bug killer. None of the deet sprays worked on me. It doesn't work to put in a garden, then not be able to work in it and have to be put on anti biotics.

Taste mostly reflects hybridizing that emphasizes characteristics other than flavor. By plants or seed rated for flavor that also provides disease resistance. The source of NPK has little to nothing to so with flavor.

Thank you for such an informative video. I’m making every effort to grow organically in my garden. I will try the neem oil and castille soap, but I’m considering buying ladybugs. I made a couple of bee hotels to encourage the carpenter bees to make their nests away from my wood arbor and fence. My only concern is having spotted lantern flies in my garden. I live in the northeast and it was really bad last summer. I used a vacuum cleaner to collect the nymphs off my cucumber. I swatted the adults, but they are so fast! I’d like to know how to if anyone has any experience in getting rid of these organically.

But if you use neem oil and castille soap, don't you also kill beneficials? Another gardening mistake is impatience and helicopter gardening, which includes perfectionism and trying to keep a garden "pest free".

Do you live in the mountains? They hibernate in the winter in big trees in the mountains and go back to where they were born to look for food. I bought a package from a local nursery five springs ago. They made lots of babies and come back every spring.

I think there is a lot more to soil, especially clay soil. My clay soil is practically 100% clay and during the dry season it may as well be sand, because the small amount of rain dries from the surface before it is absorbed. Then when the wet season comes it turns into a quagmire and trees die. I have to plant above the soil for trees to survive and I have to dig out the soil beneath for the roots to have enough space, I wouldn't call what I have "soil" as I try to avoid anything growing in it. Had I known this I would have had a lot of it just replaced.

Finding a balance is difficult to do, for watering plants. I overwatered my plants, and I did take someone's advice from the internet without realizing what I done, so I killed my plants. I replanted my seeds, and I am trying a different way of watering my plants. It's when the first true leaf grows is when I start becoming concerned if my plants will survive, or not. I know only time will tell if a balance is found to water plants. Plants that are underwatered part of the leaves should change color, and probably the plants will drop towards the soil, and overwatered plants should just drop towards the soil, so it will not grow vertically anymore.

You’re right, watering is tricky. I usually put my finger a couple inches deep in the soil and check to see if it’s dry. On super hot days, I water a little every morning, if the plant is wilting by the afternoon, I know I need to water more, or again later in the day. I plant in raised beds and containers. I buy a beautiful 4 way soil mix from my local landscaping supply yard. It’s made up of topsoil, composted cow manure, bark compost and sand. I top it with at least 2 inches of beautiful hemlock mulch (from the same landscape supply yard) which keeps my soil moist and cool. I put a little organic all purpose fertilizer in the hole when I plant and sometimes fertilize with fish emulsion if it seems my plants are struggling. So far, I’ve been successful and get beautiful tomatoes and vegetables.

Can’t say it is a mistake. However, with wood chips they do bring extra work for gardeners. Slugs, ear wicks love to hide under wood chips. I’d use straws (you can find them in any feed stores or Tracker $upply) or dry tree leaves.

Another great video! Agree entirely about the taste of fruits and vegetables today, and tomatoes and apricots are probably the worst! I'm curious about crop rotation and your recommendation on number of seasons between bringing a crop back to a section of the garden. We have a very small area (15'x18') and some raised beds, and I don't want to bring rotate anything back too soon. Cheers!
