@@louisattlee The title has now been changed, but the issue is a lot of people will see a headline or a video title, and then not bother to watch or read to get the nuance. It's a shame, but that shallow understanding perpetuates the idea of James Wong saying 'gardening is racist' when he never did. It makes things easer for lazy racists who want to spread their nonsense.

I think that I understand James Wong's arguement as being we have to understand that the world of plants is not devoid of racism. There is an underlying message that there is some British exceptionalism in the world of gardening when in fact there is a world out there where we can also be taking ideas (indeed British landscape design is influenced by South East Asia - and populated by Pagodas, Roman temples, and pastoral huts). Furthermore James Wong feels the horticultural world is being stiffled by this thinking.... that is what is worrying. I agree somewhat that if anything gardening brings people together but we have to be cognisant of that underlying tone. Take for example James Wong's experience of learning about sugar cane and slavery... that story illustrates about acknowledging this past as an expansion on our knowledge.

-Heritage in plants is seen as better simply because plants that have grow here for millennia are more adapted to the soil and ecology. And the fauna more adapted to it. -You aren't asking for more history you're asking for a cherry picked view of history highlighting Britain's crimes in order to demoralize the people. It's an attack. -He doesn't consider him self a brit by the way he talks. Referring to people generally as you instead of us/we. 3:40 The interviewer starts panicking and mouthing like a goldfish as James starts talking like a Marxist, which would reveal that they're both radical ideologues. Marxists want to deconstruct society and attack it's history so they can start a revolution.

I understand completely James Wong's point about heritage varieties or native plants and the mis-appropriation of the meaning. Yes, how can I accept that the gardening style of a large house owned by the landed upper class when my ancestors were agricultural workers who probably at best had a small vegetable patch to sustain them. Saying that as a vegetable gardener I need to take from some of that past knowledge of sometimes quite recent seed producers that was born from that era of great houses in Britain. So I might use some of the varieties that worked in the vegetable gardens of the great houses of Britain. I think that the way that I use heritage is about protecting old varieties (that may not be British varieties). That is to protect the diversity of seed varieties against industrial horticulture and agriculture. In the same ways that Mexican farmers are trying to protect corn and maize varieties. The word native is also tied up with the cultural history of the colonial times. I can see that. Who is to say what plant is native? I suppose the idea is to say where the cut off is. Or is it not worth categorising in that way. Do we stop trying to get rid of Rhododendron from the local hills as an 'invasive' (that word being more suspect really) species. I am thinking about a James Wong story about Rhubarb that I heard on gardeners question time. We all think that Rhubarb is a quintessential British fruit (rhubarb and custard and all that) but Rhubarb was originally from China or that area. The Romans used it as a medicinal plant and it was in the UK by 1390. It was the British that took this plant and turned it into something to eat as a dessert. It is true that like alot of other topics there is British exceptionalism in the underlying dialogue in gardening and we should check the language that we use. Like everything the British landscape gardens were influenced by south east asian gardens, Jekyll and Lutyens gardens brought in Arabic influences into the garden design.... we should take the world of plants as that wonderful cross fertilisation of ideas.
@WhichDoctor1
@WhichDoctor1 3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! When I say heritage I see it as preserving genetic diversity against the narrowing of seed stock to the two or three most commercially productive strains of the dozen or so most commonly grown crops. Whether that be British apple trees or south American oca, or Spanish perennial kale, or Chinese yams. But too often it's used as James points out. Heritage plants are better because they're traditional and British! But in my experience, a lot of heritage veg is slow-growing, and produces small and unappetising yields. In many cases there were good reasons why farmers stopped using them. I still grow them because they're different and interesting, and every now and then you find something really good like the peabean. And I get to feel like a gardening hipster when other people start catching on years later :p We should clear Rhododendrons when they swamp out diversity and damage ecosystems. But we should do that with any plant where that is the case, "foreign" or "native" it shouldn't matter. After all, only a little over ten thousand years ago most of these islands was stripped back to bedrock by ice, and the rest was frozen tundra. 99% of all plants that are currently growing in the UK have "invaded" at some point since then. How much does it matter if they arrived 6 thousand, 1 thousand, or 20 years ago? All that matters is what effect they have when they're here.

The fact that gardening and plants have a colonial history does not make them 'racist'. This is robbing 'racist' and 'racism' of any meaning whatsoever. Look up 'racism' in a dictionary: a) Prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism by an individual, community, or institution against a person or people on the basis of their membership of a particular racial or ethnic group, typically one that is a minority or marginalized; b) The belief that different races possess distinct characteristics, abilities, or qualities, especially so as to distinguish them as inferior or superior to one another. Somehow, I understood some change in tv gardening in recent past reflected a falling away of productive gardens: veg or flowers and market gardens in the UK. My impression was a wartime generation had carried over back garden horticulture as monoculture agriculture increased in the world. Then, the demographic shift of more people living in cities coupled with reduced access to land for allotments. For instance, where I lived in a capitol city, the housing project commissioned & built by local church endeavour was on slum land bombed in WW2 and had been allotment gardens ever since then, up until 90s.

Now, you don't even need to have a black friend to say that you are not racist, you just have to hate plants and gardens and that proves that you are not racist!?!?!? God save me from this and I'm agnostic 99,9% of the time!!!

The Rapture is soon and Jesus will take all those in christ and the children out of harms way in the blink of an eye then the 7 year tribulation will begin . ask Jesus to save you today and forgive you of your sins by his finished work on the cross and he will give you eternal life . Thessalonians 4:16-17 King James Version 16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: 17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

Are you BIPOC? Because I myself as a person of colour have faced racism in gardening while standing in my own garden or while buying gardening products. This is not what is talked about here in the video but it’s not right to police BIPOC people about what they have experienced or what they want to tackle or prioritise especially when it comes to something that we should be allowed to enjoy as a hobby that harms no one yet we are still being judged on the colour of our skin
