At first I wanted to try it, too. The O realized, that I'd have to invest in a grow light, pots and soil, wich by itself will probably amount to the equivalent of at least ten to maybe fourty store bought basil plants. And I don't even eat that much basil. Plus you have to keep at it, invest time and energy. To me, it doesn't seem worth it. I guess you might have to do this for a year to start being even or saving money

Leave your house immediately. My aunt died of basil overgrowth this summer, and it's not a pleasant way to go. She discovered this back in 2018 and in 3 months her house was completely overgrown with basil. She couldn't eat it fast enough. All she ate was basil, and she was dying. Still she wasn't fast enough and the basil outgrew the pots and started to colonise the sink and then the bathtub. The roots extended into the plastic water pipes which burst and flooded the house. The basil was able to take root and colonise the wet floor and my aunty, weakened from a diet of just basil was unable to go on let alone fight the basil back down. RIP aunt Fanny. You will always live on in our hearts.

I know I'm a year late but don't keep it in the pot you got it in. They put too many seeds in each pot and sell them to you right before they'd die from running out of space. They're overgrown and have eaten up all their food. Best way is to put them in a bigger pot and take cuttings. You need to add nutrients too, not just water to their pot. Add a spoon of compost now and then as the level of soil goes down. They're hungry and malnourished. Feed them. 🙂
@JohnMoseley3 жыл бұрын
@@ThePinkBinks Thanks. I'd already tried simply repotting in better soil (worked for a friend) and still ended up with a pathetic specimen. Will try giving it a feed now.
@ThePinkBinks3 жыл бұрын
John Moseley No problem. 🙂 When you get some healthy looking cuttings... about 8 inches long... do a 45° cut just below a node (where a couple of leaves are poking out of the stem) - think of it as a finger joint if fingers grew leaves out of each knuckle. Trim it of all the leaves except the top 4 sets of leaves or so. That should be enough to keep the cutting alive and drink the sunlight. Dip the cut ends in a cutting/cloning solution if you want to. (I highly recommend Clonex for this.) That's about an inch of dip and you only need a very thin layer. Then... pop them in cups of water and put the cups where it'll get good light and warmth. Changing the water every few days is best because that puts fresh oxygen into the water. It'll take about a month (more or less) to grow root nubs. They look a bit strange on basil. If it sort of looks like it's developing pimples under the water then that's good. Those are roots. Some of the lower leaves will start wilting and turning yellow. That's good. It is relocating parts of the leaves to turn into roots. Let the roots get big enough to hold them in good soil mix. (That's maybe another couple of weeks.) Snip off the leaves that died to make roots before the whole cutting turns yellow when you've planted them. (Or if they're in danger of going mouldy.) Water it as you would any other herb when needed. If you need practice then mint is incredibly easy to clone from. It'll clone much, much faster than other plants but it's great to learn the technique. Yay! Lots and lots of lovely, lovely basil! ❤ 😄 Your original pot can keep growing fresh cuttings for you if you keep adding nutrients and topping up the soil and shouldn't die as you're keeping it small by taking frequent cuttings. Topping up with good compost is likely all the nutrition they'll need but seaweed is a superfood for your plants so you can add that if you like. (Liquid kelp.) This method is called the cup method. There are other ways but this one requires no special set up or equipment. 🙂 Enjoy your unlimited basil. 😁
@ThePinkBinks3 жыл бұрын
John Moseley Oh... also look into how to pasteurize your soil with hydrogen peroxide just in case fungus gnats or fungus is eating away at the roots of your original plant. That might be why it's sick. Off the top of my head it was... Assuming you're using a 3% strength solution of H.Peroxide: 50ml mixed into 2 litres of water and poured through the soil should clean that supermarket soil. That's too much for one batch obviously but you can figure out the ratio from there. I'd need to dig out my notebooks to write out my calculations but use that as your starting point and the maths is pretty simple. 6% strength is double so double the water too... and so on and so on. It took me a while to figure out that amount but only use it as a medicine. 😉 It'll kill off the nasties in the soil and create oxygen in the root zone as a by product. Don't worry if you hear a very mild hissing or see bubbling. That solution shouldn't be too strong to burn the roots and should only kill whatever is making your plant sick. You can spray the top of the soil with that solution if fungus gnats find your plants in the future too. Don't use household bleach - it's the hydrogen peroxide you get from the pharmacy sold for mouthwash and bleaching hair. 🙃
@JohnMoseley3 жыл бұрын
@@ThePinkBinks My supermarket basil plants have _always_ died and I think it's mostly down to the fact that that's basically what they're designed to do. But that's a great tip and I'll definitely take it up if I things don't improve beforehand, so thanks.
@minagica Жыл бұрын
I found a way to have the rooted cuttings not become droopy after transplantation into soil: keep the soil drenched for 24 hours by having the pots stand in something deep in which the water is about 1/2 up the height of the pot. This creates an intermediary environment between the water their roots are used to and the soil they will be living in. After the 24 hours, take them out and let the soil drain and then maintain as usual 😊

I started out thinking I was a terrible gardener... then I moved into a house that had existing rose bushes and gave them a bit of rose food... they grew like CRAZY! I loved taking care of them and bringing fresh roses in. Then my dad in law went to visit family for two months, and said I could continue watering his tomato plants or just let them die out... I kept watering and grew quite attached to those plants, so I tried to find out if there was a way to keep them going despite the impending frost. I learned about plant propagation and now I am HOOKED. I got a basil plant from the store and thinned it out into other containers(since there are several plants in one pot here in the US, to make the plant look bushier, etc). Now I'm going to try to propagate them and I want so many gardening supplies... haha! It's truly becoming an addiction to me! Crazy how something so simple can be so fascinating. I love it and I'm hoping that my two tomato plants survive so I can give one to my dad-in-law upon his return to say, "Here! You can have more tomatoes with this!" :D

@@FAMUxTINxREx The node is actually called a meristem. There are apical merstems and axillary meristems. That node he is referring to allows more growth. A quick yummy snack: put a fresh basil leaf or two on a slice of flavorful tomato, and then stack that whole thing on a slice of fresh mozzarella (the kind that comes kinda wet), and dress it up a bit if you like, with perhaps a bit of salt and/or lemon pepper, and/or drizzle some aged balsamic vinegar on them. It’s a very tasty snack!!

I've tried this since the beginning of '21 and I'll add a few things for better success: 1. Mother plants obtained from seed produce sturdier cutlings for the conditions of your garden. Sow your future mother plant in a wide area and plant the cutlings around it. Rooting fresh storebought basil may eventually turn purple and die. 2. Cutlings' stems tend to bend in a hook shape while in the water. This might happen because of weight and/or plant stress and will harden when they get their roots. You can straighten them with your fingers while they are flexible but they might break if they have been in water for a few days already, as they will be hardening, and even if you straighten the basil stems they will still stay bent a little until they get their roots so be very delicate with the process. Unbent basil will help the plant to establish better in the end, but it's all a matter of preference- you can have it slightly bent up and improve water and nutrient gathering if you rather water and fertilize your plants shallowly. 3. You can still have sucessful rooting if you cut just after a node to get your cutlings- the stem area will get roots too, provided it has at least a node and a total of 1.5-2 inches of stem. It's almost guaranteed two new tops for every mature stem and node every time you cut. Basil tops will mature enough stem and node area for a new pair of cutlings every week and a half in healty plants, so you can get four or five new cutlings weekly and get a huge basil load even faster.

On the west coast of Canada (Pacific Northwest) they sell small pots of live basil in the grocery store for cooking. There are at least 20 plants per pot, sold for between $4 and $6. They tend to be spindly but it does save a lot of time bypassing the sprouting stage and it doesn't take long for them to fill out. I buy one or two of those, soak them for 15 minutes then carefully transplant. Usually there is enough to fill a 4x8 foot plot. I harvest at least a half dozen times, the first time in about 35 days. I usually get about five kilos total. I use a food processor and chop it up with a bit of olive oil and freeze in muffin tins, then I pop them out and store in ziplock bags. The olive oil helps protect the basil from freezer burn.

This is a great tutorial and I love the time lapses. I watched this a few months ago when we got a countertop hydroponic system and am rewatching now to pick up additional tips. I discovered that basil does actually send roots from the end of the cut stem (even more so than from the nodes, which was a huge surprise to me). Both my genovese basil and my Thai basil do it. Makes it super easy to get bushing/propagating in one pass.
