In this video I explain how to restore a dying Basil plant. Without repotting and feeding most store bought basil plants will slowly deteriorate and won't live much longer than six months. However if a basil plant is transferred to a larger pot, kept well fed and is put in a warm sunny windowsill they will very quickly grow into a large plant which will provide lots of heathy leaves for many months.

@@melodyvoss Thank you for your sweetness :) I Enjoy gardening, only in another scale and focus. The "former" gardening was a commercial family-owned garden that just wasn't going to survive in a modern world. It ended when my parents quit. They had us kids have an education to get some "decent" job instead of continuing in the garden. After a LOONG while I've started gardening on our cottage. We just planted some apple trees and berry bushes. Soon it's warm enough in inland to plant potatoes and after that other stuff. It's great to start using all the knowledge I gathered while working in our family garden.

Thanks you for posting this up. Its a silly story, but this brought back some sadness for me. When covid first hit, and shopping was so difficult, I bought a little basil plant. My girlfriend and I kept it alive for quite a while, transferring it to a larger pot, and using plant food and some extra lights over the winter. Somehow that silly little plant was something I could focus on improving, when things were so weird. Well, eventually it got to a state that I couldn't manage it well, or maybe neglected it, and we lost it. Silly, because it's just a plant, but the loss still makes me sad. I think I might try again.
@Gardeningat58N
@Gardeningat58N Жыл бұрын
Basil is usually fairly easy to look after for one summer, but becomes a little trickier over winter and into the next year as its only a short lived plant. But with regular pruning and the right care its possible to grow it for a few years. If you grow it again and it starts to go down hill you can always take come cuttings so that you can keep part of it alive even if the main plant dies. I understand the feeling, especially with plants that you have grown for many years, you become attached after looking after it day after day for years.

Alright I did all this and it's been several weeks. I'm thrilled. I'd actually put my basil out in the plant graveyard because I was losing hope, but I went ahead with all the advice in this video and now she's looking big, dark, and lush. It's time for another pruning, and I think I'll be aggressive with it again because there's still a big leggy distance between the new lower leaves and the older mid height leaves. Perfect time to get into propagating! Thanks for this video, it's stellar!!

Yeah, I think these are two points I've learned, even in large trays these things get root bound and even those remain after the plant has died off, so the following year you get a root brick. maybe change soil every two years? 2 months for feeding, got it.
@TheGuruNetOn
@TheGuruNetOn Жыл бұрын

@Gardeningat58N
@Gardeningat58N Жыл бұрын
Basil is only a short lived perennial, after a year or two the plant usually becomes woody and leggy and it's growth will slowly become weaker. Although if you take cuttings the new plants will grow well for another year or two. I usually grow Basil for a couple of years and then take cuttings to get new plants, although cutting them back like in this video can also help to prolong their life.

Update: it got some dark-green but very tiny leaves after about a month. I realized I forgot to put the fertilizer.. afterwards decided to plant it in the garden, without any fertilizer and now its growing stronger and bigger leaves again!

My store bought basils just die out in days even if I split them into multiple pots. They just hold on kinda, grow thick and not very tasty leaves that stay small. It doesn't grow up, it doesn't branch, it doesn't grow big leaves. The existing leaves start dying out and look sick or like bug infested. It might come back after initially dying down and push a lot of new foliage, yet they stay small and start look sick after a bit and the plant itself doesn't grow.

Some basil plants from food shops will have had growth inhibiter added, so they won't grow well deliberately. This is so you have to buy more. The thing to do is buy the plant and immediately use it for cuttings, rather than trying to grow it on. The growth inhibiter is in the soil, so cuttings will thrive, but the main plant will die!

Fantastic video. The way you explained it seems so simple, and it probably is... yet they're still not the easiest plants to maintain for most. My question would be about the feed. What & how does one feed a plant like this, do you add or refresh the compost? Is there something we can/should add to the water to feed the plant?

Best thing really is to keep the soil auto-watered without the possibility of getting water logged. For this: find a clear or translucent container that the pot you have the plant in (or are about to replant the plant into) fits into without falling in. Thread some cotton rope through the hole(s) of the pot and adjust them below the pot so that they are long enough to properly reach the bottom of the clear/translucent (watering) container. Plant your basil or other herb into the pot and cut the top part of the rope just above the soil level and then cover it up. Fill the clear watering 1-2cm or ¾-1" above the level that the bottom of the pot would reach, so that the water can flood just the bottom of the soil of the newly replanted plant when you first place it inside the watering container. Refill the container until just below the bottom of the pot when the plant has soaked almost all the water out of it (you don't want the wicks to dry out), which you should be able to see easily since you chose a clear or translucent container. If it dries out, fill it up to the 1cm-½" height above the bottom of the pot so that it can flood its bottom again, but it's best not to yo-yo with the humidity of the soil too much, it can degrade the quality of the soil (not to mention it can kill your plant in the process) If you haven't been pruning your plant and it got leggy: I recommend pruning it, putting the cuttings in water (and keeping said water fresh) until they start growing roots (max a week), then plant them along the edge of the pot at least 1cm in by making a hole with a skewer or something so that the new roots don't get damaged when you stick the new clone into the soil (at least 3-4cm, 1-2" deep)

Wow... What a transformation! Here in Cyprus, my basil tends to grow very well due to the heat and very strong sunshine, but I have a problem that I've never been able to solve - once the basil starts to flower, it's impossible to get it out of flowering mode and pinching off the buds just encouraged more flower growth and it stops producing leaves. İf you have any tips as to how to stop that happening, I'd be very grateful!

Basil usually flowers due to stress, but also if it gets to a large size. If your plant flowers lots in summer it may be too hot or more likely too dry for it. Basil is tropical, but in the tropics temperatures don't usually go above 35C and it is norally very humid, unlike the extreme dry heat of Cyprus in summer. Keep it away from the midday sun in summer and make sure it has plenty of water. If it is because it has become a large plant then regular pruning should stop it from flowering. If you also feed the plant with a fertiliser which is high in nitrogen it will also encourage leaves instead of flowers.

I'm glad you enjoyed my time lapse, they can live up to around 5 years with the correct care, although often they become a little weaker after a year. You can always take cuttings if your plant becomes too old and woody.

Basil is also a very easy plant to grow cuttings, so if a branch is dying, consider cutting right above the leaves as shown in the video, then put this cutting (rod) in a glass of water for 5 to 6 days, and you will notice the plant is not dead, in fact it is making new roots in water. So you can put this new plant in a pot. Infinite basil for you.

This is great info. Basil's one of my favourites to have in the house but I often struggle to keep one going. This helps a lot. Two quick questions: 1) If your light source is coming from one side, does it stress a plant or slow its growth to turn the pot occasionally so it gets light on both sides? 2) Are there any tips for keeping aphids and fruit flies off the plant? Someone told me marigolds are good for that if you have a garden, but I'm not sure if it's just potted plants indoors (maybe introduce more spiders? 😊)
