I have an Amaryllis an on mine it had one thick trunk /stem that grew 3 flowers! Along with three others that just grew the long leaves ! Flowers came an gone ! Should I treat all 3 with the bamboo sticks and feed them all , as there all in one big pot 🤔! On the first Amaryllis it has 4 healthy leave and a separate stock that's a little thicker than my thumb throughout its whole length, the 3 flowers on this one stock have died but stock looks very much healthy and alive ... so I'll cut off bulbs behind flowers and do I leave those in the pot for the nutrients and tie up all the leaves 1/3 of the way up and will give them the nutrients described by yourself?

@Gardeningat58N2 жыл бұрын
If it's a very recent break you may be able to tie it back up, but if it broke a few days ago then it might break more when you lift it up. It won't fully heal, but as long as there is still some connection the leaf should remain a live for a while. As long as it's still green then it will still be alive and supporting the plant, if it goes yellow or brown then cut it off.

I gave my moms neglected amaryllis some succulent food on a whim and it bloomed in summer with 100+ degree Fahrenheit heat. (So it became mine) I cut the flower stalk since it shriveled up and the leaves are getting yellow and dry. Should I still water it? The soil dried up in two days (indoors now) so it might still utilize water but I’m not sure how it will act now since it bloomed in summer and not winter
@Gardeningat58N Жыл бұрын
It's unusual for it to die back in summer, sounds like it might have been too hot for it. I would keep the soil a little on the dry side if there's no leaves, but don't let it fully dry out. Once you see new leaves start to water more regularly again.

Keep watering the plant and keep it on a bright windowsill. It will keep it's leaves all summer and then start to loose it's leaves next autumn or winter. Follow the instructions on the packet of fertiliser for how strong to make it and feed it about once a month.

Do not cut off the green leaves! They are the food producer that feed the engine (bulb).of the plant. Occasionally an amaryllis bulb doesn’t flower. Rarely but it does happen. Keep watering plant with leaves (weekly?) and treat it like a regular houseplant. If all goes well, it will flower for you next year. But also sometimes bulbs send up lots of leaves and then send up a flower stalk. Some amaryllis do grow incredibly tall, over 2 feet, some less tall. You must have one of the tall versions. In the summer (when temperatures are above 60 degrees F, you might be able to put it ,still in it’s pot, outside in the sun so the leaves can suck up the sunlight and replenish the bulb. Again keep soil moist and give it plant food periodically as video describes. Then in the fall, before the temperatures dip below 50-60 degrees F., bring the bulb in pot back inside. Put it in a not sunny cool place (I don’t have a particularly cool place in my apartment so I just put it behind my bedroom door away from heater). Some people have a basement to store it. Stop watering it. Let the leaves die back. Only then do you cut off the dead leaves and wait. Let bulb rest for 2-3 months. Then cross your fingers...give your bulb some new potting mix (maybe just remove the top bit and replenish with some new potting mix) ,give it a good watering, put it in a sunny window and again wait. When you start to see green growth emerging from the top of the bulb that is when you start once again watering it every week like a houseplant and watch in amazement the miracle of Mother Nature. And so the cycle begins again.

It varies from bulb to bulb, some have lots of leaves at the same time as flowering, others don't grow leaves until the flowers are dying back. The seeds will be ready once the seed capsules dry out, it can take a few months, you will know if its been pollinated because behind the flowers it will start to swell to the size of a grape. It takes a few years for the young seedlings to flower so you will need to be patient for your first flowers.

Once the leaves die out, do you continue to water the bulb? How can you postpone the next round? Do you just not water it anymore? Thanks for a great video, I'm subscribing.
@Gardeningat58N9 жыл бұрын
+PhobosAnomaly As the leaves start to die water it less and then completely stop once the last leaf is yellow. Its then a good idea to repot it as when it has no leaves its completely dormant. If the pot is not too small just change the compost and make sure you remove any soft rotting roots. Once its in its new pot, keep it almost completely dry, just a little water if its bone dry, (a bit like a cactus). Then start to water again when the flower shoot or leaves start to re-emerge. If you want to delay the flowering then remove it from the soil and keep dry in a cool place, but not below 5C (40F) for a long time, or even 0C (32F) for a short time. If its kept cold and dry it should last for several months, possibly up to 6. Then when you want it to grow just move it to a warm location and treat it as mentioned above. Naturally they go dormant for a month or two, its best to let them have a little rest. In the wild they go dormant in the cool winter months. Thanks for subscribing.

+Gardening at 58N When I planted my amaryllis bulb, it had already developed long roots (in the store). Someone told me to trim the roots back to the base, before planting. So I did. I hope it will be alright.
@Gardeningat58N9 жыл бұрын
PhobosAnomaly If the roots are dry and dead then yes, but otherwise I would keep them and carefully work the compost around them when planting the bulb. The roots are very thick and also store a little energy for the bulb. The bulb will still be alright if you cut the roots off, as it will grow new ones, but it will have a little less energy as it will have to grow new roots, so the flowers may be just a little smaller. If you bought it dry in a shop, the chances are the roots would have already dried up and died.

Use some kind of support to keep the leaves gently more upward. circular plant support rings are sometimes great for this. I just got some on Amazon (Recozy (pack of six) Small Garden Plant Support Rings, 7.9” wide x 11” tall, 3 legs). They are working great. They make a larger version that I use for my very old tall snake plant. (No, I don’t make money from this...just saw them used on a few KZbin channels and searched them out. Work great for my needs). What I like is they fold up flat when not in use and have multiple uses for potted plants.

Usually the flower stalks comes first or at the same time as the leaves, although sometimes the flower stalk can be a little later. Wait a few more weeks as it may just be late. If there is no flower after a few months then the plant probably didn't have enough light or feed last year to build up enough energy for produces flowers, or the rest period was too short and warm.

Thank buddy for the cool tips on maintaining beautiful Amaryllis in healthy mode, with the objective of beautiful flowers come spring! Ya know up here on the central plateau, its not as hot as the se part or the coastal plains but the only bulb plants that do well here are this one, known locally as 'Azucena' and the Iris. On watering also, i realice that both these flowers are drought resistant so a once a week watering is fine? Thumbs up and greeting from Querétaro, Mexico! :)
@Gardeningat58N8 жыл бұрын
Yes watering once a week should be enough. As you say they are drought tolerant, they use their large bulb to store water. Whilst dormant they can last months without water, but when they are growing they will benefit from regular watering. I normally wait until the surface of the compost dries out before I water, but I never let it fully dry out except when its dormant.

I would recommend not cutting the leaves as the more leaf area it has the more energy it can store for next years flowering. You can reduce the length of the leaves by cutting them, but next years flowers will be smaller/fewer and you may risk infection getting into the leaf.

I am new to this type of plant and was wondering if you could help me out by answering a question I have. Our Amaryllis finished blooming a few weeks ago but it's leaves are still pretty stiff and dark green so I wanted to leave it as is for a bit longer. Especially since Spring just started here. However I noticed that the bulb is becoming shriveled and it looks like its layers can be peeled back quite a bit. The bulb is white colored with some green. Also it looks like part of it is becoming a pinkish brown. Is the bulb beginning to rot? What should I do? Should I let it go into dormancy and such?
@Gardeningat58N8 жыл бұрын
+TheBrokenDoll6 Its normal for the bulb to shrink a little after flowering and growing of its leaves. This is because the plant has used all of the stored energy from the bulb to grow the flowers, leaves and new roots. The bulb should shed some old brown outer layers which may peel off by themselves, but underneath there should be a firm bulb which is green at the top. Don't peel off the brown layers unless they are falling off by themselves. As long as the green part of the bulb is firm your Amaryllis should be fine. The main problem is drainage, so its best to let the soil dry out a little between watering, because if it sits in very wet compost it can rot. Leave your Amaryllis in a sunny location, water when its dry and feed it regularly with a high potassium feed (flower, or Tomato feed is fine). Over the summer the plant will slowly store energy back into the bulb and the bulb will fatten up. When autumn comes reduce the watering and then stop watering when the leaves die. As this is when it will become dormant.
@TheBrokenDoll68 жыл бұрын
Gardening at 58N Sadly I just cut off all the leaves thinking it was time to put it into dormancy. The bulb feels like it can shed quite a bit of its layers since it feels squishy. Did I ruin the bulb or can it still go into dormancy?
@TheBrokenDoll68 жыл бұрын
Gardening at 58N Can the bulb still be fattened up with fertilizer and if it is placed outside when sunny even though it doesn't have it's leaves anymore? Or what about if the bulb was placed under a plant light, would that help? I just hope I didn't kill it.
@Gardeningat58N8 жыл бұрын
+TheBrokenDoll6 I'm not 100% what it will do as I've never cut the leaves off in Spring. It certainly won't flower for a year or two, as its energy reserves will be gone. It will probably use the last of its energy to grow some new leaves in the next few weeks. Only water it if it becomes very dry, as without leaves it doesn't need much water. Leave it somewhere warm and sunny. Start to water a bit more once the leaves return. It will probably only grow small leaves as it won't have the energy to grow large ones. The bulb should start to fatten again once its new leaves have grown in.
@TheBrokenDoll68 жыл бұрын
