This year was the first that I planted Zinnia seeds. They're now my favorite flower. I didn't bother spacing them, I simply scattered them and sprinkled a tad bit of compost over them. At this moment, on Sept. 13, 2023, they're about 4 feet tall. Gorgeous hot pinks and hot oranges. I also planted some mini-Zinnias in some pots. I'm starting to harvest drying flowers to collect the seeds for next year's planting. I don't expect to need to order any more seed packets.

Wow! I'm going to try that next year. Will deers eat them? Nothing stand in my area, deers eat everything even the hosts and I didn't think they would.

I’ve been a zinnia lover for decades. In my world I have failed miserably at starting them indoors. I still plant them directly & then prepare to “do battle” with the onslaught of slugs when they first pop through the soil. They are, by far, the best flower to cheer up my front yard along my picket fence ❤

Wasn't a fan of zinnias until a year or so ago. Bought some seeds after seeing someone in my local gardening group growing them. Like them and have grown them again since. When I deadhead them I scatter sone of the seeds and store the remainder. I have also found they self seed which is a lovely surprise.

I don't use a ruler. I dig trenches, sprinkle them in the trench, and bury them. Or, I just throw them around and stomp them in. I get beautiful zinnias every year all throughout my gardens. Same with my poppy seeds. I just fling them everywhere from the poppy pods I harvested the previous year, and put into ziploc bags and smash with a hammer. My gardens are so big I have no time to plant seeds one by one. I love big masses of color. It helps to thin them once they start germinating for larger blooms.

I love plants, flowers, and gardening. I planted some seeds from the dollar tree, and they are now over 4 feet tall! I couldn't believe it! I have a flower bed and anything I grow in the bed. I made 15 years ago grow taller than the average height. 😍🥰

Even though zinnias can tolerate short periods of drought, Mbofung-Curtis says they'll grow best in moist soil. "Water plants about three times a week so that the soil stays moist to about 6 to 8 inches deep," she advises. For potted plants, she recommends only watering them when the soil feels dry.

Thank you! I learned some new things today. Not sure why, but my late mother, would prep a bed, with a relatively flat and smooth surface. Then she'd just drop zinnia seed here and there...and lightly PRESS them into the topsoil, not even covering them, with dirt. Beautiful zin̈nias....go figure.

This is my first year trying to grow Zinnias. I got tired of the high cost of buying them in greenhouses. I started them inside in peat pots. We were at 81 degrees then it turned cold and I chose to not plant them outside. They are getting a little leggy because of it. Hope to put them outside in a few days when it is suppose to warm back up again.

So helpful! Question, I planted 3 seeds per hole which is what I read to do. But what do I do when they all 3 sprout and grow? Leave them alone or try to separate them at the roots and replant the extra ones somewhere else?

I throw them in the garden, cover with a bit of compost and up they come. I buy the giant zinnia seeds and stake them.

When doing the succession sowing, is there a concern for crowding? Do you plant your initial seeds further apart than recommended?

Should you use fertilizer for zinnias?
@Gardeningknowhow Жыл бұрын
Yes, they perform best when fed regularly.

I just started zinna seeds. They popped up well, now I will be separating and getting a bit taller(they are in peat pots). Can I put them in an area under a tree but west facing I live in so cal (warm, dry climate)I'm worried tree shade may be a problem but I did get lots of lantana flowers there last year. I'm worried about late afternoon sun. It gets it from 2 or 3 till sunset. With the rest of the day dappled Will this work? Was thinking of starting hardening off 3-1. Apprec your advice
@Gardeningknowhow10 ай бұрын
Zinnias thrive best with at least 6 hours of sunlight per day, although they can tolerate partial shade. While they may produce fewer blooms and grow shorter in height, they should still develop properly and provide blooms.
@57colliegirl2 жыл бұрын
I prefer the shortest ones 6"-18". The taller ones tend to fall over.

I’ve been trying to grow my Zinnias outside and so far one seed has sprouted and is doing great but all the others did nothing. I don’t know if it’s the spot they are in or it’s the dirt. I don’t know but at least I got one. This is my 4th attempt at growing them with the same results. Only 1 sprouts. Bad seeds maybe? I bought a big box of seeds in the store called “Zinnia Semi-Dwarf Pumila Mixed Colors” and the brand is American Seed.
@Gardeningknowhow Жыл бұрын
Some of the reasons why your seeds may not be germinating would be too much or too little water, planting depth, health of soil, or unwelcome critters getting to your seed before they can germinate. You may want to consider a seed viability test as well. We explain this process step-by-step in our newest video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/havCZIxveJaafMk. If the seeds do not germinate well with this test, it would be best to contact the seed vendor or retailer. Good luck!

In this particular instance, only one seed was planted into each hole. Although 2-3 seeds is also recommended. Thin or transplant multiple seedlings once they reach 2" tall.

I burned ALL of my zinnias with neem oil yesterday. I sprayed them off with water today. Will they die? Should I pull them up or prune them all the way down?
@Gardeningknowhow Жыл бұрын
Spraying the flowers off was a great first step! I would also suggest to keep them well-watered over the next few days and you can cut the plants back to help them recover. Keep us posted!

Can you plant them a little deeper if they've gotten leggy?
@Gardeningknowhow Жыл бұрын
You can try providing more light if you are starting them from seeds indoors. Or, you can also pinch them back to produce a bushier plant.
@catlady1462 Жыл бұрын
What about pinching back?
@Gardeningknowhow Жыл бұрын
Pinching is also a good practice. When the plants are still young (8-12" tall) you can pinch off the top 4" right above a set of leaves to increase branching.
