Outstanding! You forgot to mention that when you trim the seedlings back to 5 inches, you should use all of the trimmed onion tops as chives on baked potatoes, or any other recipe that calls for chives. I would also trim back some of the tops of the harvested onions and use those for green onions.

0:17 *TIMING* Anytime in February is fine. 0:30 *SHORT VS LONG DAY ONION* Short day onions grow vegetatively as days are getting shorter, and begin bulb growth as days are getting longer (good in the South where they can over-winter onions). Long day onions grow vegetatively as days are getting longer, and begin bulb growth as days are getting shorter (good for the North where onions are planted in the Spring). 1:15 *BIENNIAL* First year they grow, second year they go to seed. 1:20 *SEED VS SETS* Starting from seed is best, so grow first year. Sets are second year onions, end up with small onions that don't keep well and plant may try flowering as it is the second year of growth. 2:30 *TRAYS AND SOIL* Uses 2-tray method. Use sifted potting soil, he uses Fox Farm, but can be any as long as chemical free. 2:52 *WORM CASTINGS* Add 20% by volume, prevents many issues. 3:07 *MOISTURE* Pre-moisten the soil so it's moist, but not dripping wet. 3:15 *TRAY* Fill with soil, gently pat down, spray the surface 3:24 *SEEDING* Sprinkle up to 300 seeds per tray. He's using Yellow of Parma. They can grow very close together. 3:37 *GERMINATION* After 10-days will see them sprouting. Keep around 70 degrees Fahrenheit, use heat mat if needed. 3:50 *TRIMMING* After a few weeks when they're 8 inches tall, trim them down to about 5 inches tall. 4:15 *FERTILIZER* Use 1 fl oz of fish fertilizer per gallon of water to fertilize the tray every time you trim them. 4:27 *TRANSPLANT* Around Apr11, gently pull apart roots in tub of compost tea. Choose largest ones, set smaller ones aside. Rake back mulch and put into compost to plant into soil beneath. 5:34 *BOARD METHOD* Nate's magic method (so pay attention). Lays down parallel boards (2x4 or 2x6) on bed with 2-3 inch gap between them. Makes shallow trench 1-inch deep, lays onions in trench, covers with fluffy quality compost, waters in with aerated compost tea (if you have it). Leave boards in place. NOTE: Nate later explains that using 2x6 boards will result in larger onions due to extra space compared to 2x4 boards. 6:19 *10 DAYS* About 10d after transplanting (Apr11 in video), onions should have perked up and standing upright. Can remove boards at this point if onions standing on their own. 6:30 *8 WEEKS* About 8w after transplanting (Jun06 in video), should have well established onion plants. Shows his onions mulched with 3-4 inches of grass clippings, which help keep soil moist. Mulch is important because onions have shallow roots. Nate only watered with weekly compost tea. 7:04 *12 WEEKS* About 12w after transplanting (Jun28 in video). Nate shows hute onion plants about waist height (3-feet). Summer solstice just passed, days getting shorter, so his "long day onions" are now starting bulb formation. 7:15 *HARVEST* About 15w after transplanting (Jul21 in video). Nate shows onion bulbs ready to harvest because some are falling over. Don't wait until they all fall over. 8:58 *SOIL FOOD WEB* Nate shows soil under harvested onions, just need robust soil food web, not gimmicks like the electroculture. 9:20 *CURING* Hangs upside down on day of harvest, uses wire shelving. Let air dry in the shade for 2-3 weeks until leaves turn brown and crispy. Then cut off leaving 2-3 inches of the neck for storage. 9:48 *STORAGE* Nate shows his stored onions on Feb22, 6 months after harvesting. 10:15 *FLASHBACK* Shows red onions with all the tops flopped over, waited too long to harvest so won't store as well. Then fast-forwards 6 months later, showing most of the ones that flopped over are sprouting, while very few of the ones that didn't flop over are sprouting.

Great video and info... I really appreciate the DATES of different stages. Questions: is it true onion seeds don't store well so you have to buy them every year? But have you tried saving your own seeds? When harvesting, I gather you don't wash them, but keep them as dry as possible, but what if during the time you are going to harvest, you get several rainy days, what would you do? Do you grow onions in that spot year after year, and don't change the location? What do you do with that lot after you harvest the onions? Thank you for the tips... I am going to try to incorporate them in my yard. If you like you can answer these questions in the LIVE on Saturday.

My Walla Wallas are at around 5" at the moment. I'm planning on using bamboo, staked in place, for my board method. I also picked up red onion sets so I can decide what's best for me. I've seen some locals end up with baseball size onions from set, so if that is a possibility, I may decide to free up a seed shelf for something else... I know I won't be disappointed in the seed method, but I gotta try the red sets. Is it possible to obtain seed from our sets for the next year?
@gardenlikeaviking
@gardenlikeaviking 7 ай бұрын
sets are a total wildcard... sometimes they produce nice sized onions and sometimes tiny ones and many times they just go right to flower.... but no matter what they don't store nearly as long as onions from seed... good on you for experimenting though so now you will know the differences for your own first hand experience!!!... yes many of the sets will flower and you just have to keep the seeds from those flowers once they turn brown and start to drop the seeds its time to harvest the whole flower so watch carefully!

Great video. When I sow black seeds on black soil, I usually tamp the potting mix fairly level, then spread a thin layer of very fine river sand, similar to what they use in golf course sand traps, on top, then when I sow the seeds I can easily see their distribution. The smaller the seed, the greater the benefit. You're transplanting April 11 in your zone... to help me translate to my zone 4, what's your average last spring frost date please?

This video is amazing. Two questions! Can you grow carrots in between and germinate them under the boards while the onions are establishing? Maybe that would overcrowd…also is there any benefit in planting over winter or is it better to just grow in early spring? In VA for reference. I think I would need to do short day over winter if I plant them outside? This part confuses me.
@gardenlikeaviking
@gardenlikeaviking 2 ай бұрын
I do believe you get too cold to do onions over winter there... that would be more in the southern states where it doesn't hardly dip below 25F... these boards are left in place much longer that you'd leave them in place to germinate carrots and they would get far too crowded at this scale... but if you just had a tiny little garden plot and needed to maximize space then give it a try and let me know how it works!

@gardenlikeaviking
@gardenlikeaviking 6 ай бұрын
onion seeds are the most easily oxidized of all seeds meaning they only last one year before going bad... even if you order the onion seeds that same year and store them incorrectly then they will often have terrible germination.... you need super fresh seeds stored correctly then only bury them with a light fluffy topping of soil no deeper than 1/4 inch deep...

Excellent informative video i was struggling with germination. Ordering the thermostat controler heat mats. Planning the board method on rows of straw bales and mowing the grass between for the compost for the farm along with electric company wood chips after they rot a year. Thanks much for the information

Newbie here! Thanks so much for this - a couple of beginner questions: First, do I remove the dome as soon as sprouts appear and move to grow light? Second, how long should I keep them on the heat mat? Thanks again!
@gardenlikeaviking
@gardenlikeaviking 6 ай бұрын
yes remove the dome asap and move to the grow lights... you can keep them on the mat as long as you like but once they sprout you can move it off if you need the space for other crops... once sprouted they'll just grow slower without a heat mat

Do u keep some for seeds, after 5 generations of keeping the seeds u will have a plant completely adapted to your environment. Getting away from hybrid seeds is a good move in todays world.

How has been the effects/ performance of JMS on your onions? I watched your video on how to make JMS and you recommend it for all crops
@gardenlikeaviking
@gardenlikeaviking 6 ай бұрын
I don't need to add the JMS anymore really because the soil is so bursting with life ofter several years of these practices... I only use aerated compost teas now... but yes JMS is very effective at getting the soil filled with life and microorganisms

Thanks a lot! Love the clarity, logic and condensed knowledge of all your videos! Is this all applicable to shallots too? I want to interplant shallots with carrots and would like to remove boards once carrots sprout - is it possible or the boards should be kept for longer? What if I keep a thicker layer of pine needles as mulch to cool the soil instead of the boards? Actually, there will be taller plants in those beds with shallots so I don’t worry about heating up the soil. And the last question - if I want to save seeds from shallots - will I need to harvest small bulbs and store them and plant the next season or I can leave some shallots and overwinter them (we can have single digits F in winter though, zone 7a PA) and they will flower next season?
@gardenlikeaviking
@gardenlikeaviking 7 ай бұрын
the boards will definitely help the carrots sprout but must be removed immediately upon seeing the sprout appear... and yes you can leave the shallots in the ground if you cut them back and then place a very thick layer of mulch over them to insulate from the super cold they should survive

I absolutely love your concise videos. Question: I noticed the onions you harvested didn't have much of an outer layer left on them. But the ones that you had in storage did. Does the lack of an outer dry/crispy layer affect storage?
@gardenlikeaviking
@gardenlikeaviking 7 ай бұрын
that is just what happens naturally as the onions dry... the outer layers easily fall off by themselves just even from the gentlest of handling... and thats perfectly ok for them.... but I never remove any of the layers intentionally just so they look cleaner because you don't want to remove anything that doesn't just fall off naturally...thank you!

I accidentally bought short day onions. I live in Wisconsin. Can a short day be used for anything useful such as for pest control or green onions?
@gardenlikeaviking

I would simply get new seeds... yellow of parma...New York early.... yes you can still try and plant the short days outside but don't expect much... you'll definitely get green onion from them if you have the space to waste

So, when you harvest and hang the onions to dry, I notice the leaves are all on there. I also hear tell you can eat those leaves. Would it impede the drying process to trim some of those onion leaves to eat? Are those leaves no longer good to eat at that stage of growth? Thank you! Great video. I love being able to see the whole growing process.

At this point they are very fibrous and not enjoyable or full of flavor anymore… its best to leave all the leaves because those are the plants solar panels that help capture the energy to make the biggest and best bulb
