Ironically today is a rainy day in Rochester Michigan and I have my cup of coffee. Time to get outside and measure my yard.

Drawing over a half an acre lot to scale was NOT fun. Lol However it was so necessary! It's so much easier once you have it down to see how much room you actually have for plants. I'm also marking out where i need privacy year round (evergreens/trellis/etc.) and key vistas from the house. It's easier for me to figure out those areas first, and then find a way to blend or connect them to adjacent beds and other areas of the yard so it all flows together and feels cohesive. I worked at a garden nursery years ago, and i have a lot of plant knowledge, but i am gaining a new appreciation for what landscape designers do! It ain't easy! 🤣

Just went through and watched all of the videos on your channel and it's been so much fun! I'd love more elaboration on use-first, especially for incorporating structures like raised bed gardening, patios, shaded area, greenhouses, etc.

One more quick note... i took the time to research different designers talking about size and placement of foundation plantings. For example, what can make your house look short and squatty (too tall shrubs next to a house) and what looks too busy (crazy alternating repeat patterns). I looked through a ton of examples until the idea of how to frame a house properly was cemented in my head. I think taking the time to really learn from professionals is key!

Thank you for including so much useful information on what it takes to take on this kind of project! We're new home owners but starting small with no vegetation whatsoever in front or back. I love the planning stage and the idea of just sitting with a cup of coffee and drawing out some ideas appeals greatly. Living in a dry hot climate makes it so that most folks just settle for throwing rocks on the ground to keep the dirt from blowing everywhere. I've never tried growing anything but I'm excited to start learning cuz I want to create my own colorful and whimsically magical sanctuary in this dust bowl of a town that I have grown to love! >^.^

You are very talented, very good advice. Isn't a map usually called a landscape plan?

What are your thoughts about landscaping under trees and areas that are a fall leaf nightmare cleanup? The fall cleanup in central Missouri is the bane of all for about 50 days. I've learned that cleaning the leaves around the existing landscape (when I bought the house) right next to the house on three sides is a complete chore of misery. The leaves get trapped everywhere. I would like to add more landscape to reduce the 1/4 acre of front yard grass but not at the expense of cleaning leaves off the plants/shrubs/beds all winter.

I'm designing a space in the front yard that's situated in a rather uneven spot. Any tips for landscape maps that deal with drastic increases in elevation? The highest point is roughly 6.5 feet higher than the lowest point. No rush, ofc, cuz the cost of this project is gonna be... ahem... a *fun* number... So yeah, any tips about indicating elevation changes on paper would be great.

I've been dreaming about the piece of land I bought for over a year now, and what I did was find the land on Google maps, then overlay the tax map with the property lines on top of that on a PowerPoint slide. I've been playing with house plans and little circles that mean different plants for a while now

When should we consult/hire a Professional Landscape Designer vs. a Landscape Architect for our landscapes?
