I never thought much about gardening until I became a homeowner. Now it’s my favorite hobby. I find myself trying to recreate three acres into an old world fantasy scene. I’ve successfully naturalized Foxgloves in the woodline and have created an English Bluebell forest. Now I’m working on making a fantasy cottage style garden with climbing roses, hollyhocks, delphiniums, Foxglove and Lupins. It’s like being Bob Ross but painting with biology. And it’s a great thing to do with my daughters. Next thing you know your picking strawberries, making Oxeye Daisies and periwinkle into flower crowns with the girls, there’s humming birds after the cardinal climbers and butterflies everywhere and it all smells like roses outside. Can’t beat gardening as a hobby!

We bought a new family home many years ago and I hired a landscape architect to help design our back garden. His remuneration arrangement included a very reasonable upfront fee that was substantially discounted as long as we bought all our plant materials and landscape materials from the nursery he was affiliated with. He followed the same steps covered in this video, and the critical component that personally involved us was his gaining an understanding of our requirements and thoughts on the project. We were extremely satisfied with the creative ideas and required knowledge that he brought to the project. I did all the planting and other landscape required physical work myself. The end project was definitely much improved with the valuable participation of the landscape architect. I was personally also capable of drawing to scale paper renditions of the site plan and finished design, as I had taken drafting courses in high school; however, I did not possess the needed knowledge of what plants would thrive in our climate, soil type and sun and shade areas. In addition, he possessed the knowledge of the ultimate size of the chosen plants trees and shrubs, all of which is required to develop a plan that you will be happy with. By the way, I do enjoy your educational videos. You do an excellent job.

For the base map I used the back of wrapping paper with 1 inch squares at a scale of 1sq yard to 1 square inch. I also used construction paper cut outs for plants. I label the cut outs ..one could use post it notes too. This permits me to move things around on the map. I take a photo before putting it away.

I do my base map digital as PPP slides having google map as a background picture. That makes it very easy without measuring to get the proportions right. I can also copy any slide and play around with ideas and write down information for each plant, like the date it was planted etc. When google map is updated I can see if my flower plan and the new map match and correct it.

Tip: I used to draw base maps for reworking rooms in my house. For saving redrawing multiple times I recommend drawing out spaces of objects that take up space in your plan on another graph paper and cut them out with some light shading of a color pencil and write the name of the object on it. This way you can move it around your plan and figure out it's best placement. Since most parts of the garden will have a maximum radius/diameter you can easily make circles in proportion. It may seem tedious at first, but can save a ton of time in revisions. If you are married...... this can happen countless times. I have a lot of heavy furniture that my wife can't help with. I like to move things once.

Very useful, informative and has helped me so much in understanding someo f the basics of landscape design. I can't afford to pay a landscaper and know very little about landscape design but this sets out very practical methods and process of the important things to take into account. I have a very 'difficult' section, it's sloped, and 'wonky' and had been uncared for. Lots of work to get it back to a starting point. I love the idea of doing the site survey to actually put down on paper or digitally the opportunities and limitations and also identifing what I have, the sun shade spots etc etc and to see where I can take it from here. Draw a base map (make a printer copy as an emergency backup) then use clear plastic as overlay sheets, drawing in using non-permenant mediums. One can be for shade/sun, and others for walkways, patios, another for major plants you want. Now you can mix-and-match layers. Oops, this won't work with that? Wipe off the feature and redraw it.

what i just did in my yard, i noticed even after you put it down on paper, my plan changed a bit when i was putting the plants in the ground, it wasnt exactly as i drew it up. the draw up did help tremendously

This is a great video! I’ve done most of this already but I’m hoping you have some recommendations for width of walkways. My mom is almost 80 and she loves being in the garden but her mobility is not great anymore. She needs to sit often and she has to walk on hard, even surfaces. She wants a small vegetable garden, a place for her roses and dwarf citrus, and some assorted flowers. We’re planning raised beds made of concrete blocks with a cap stone to sit on and having concrete poured for the path ways. Poured concrete over pavers so there’s less shifting and settling. I figured the paths between the raised beds needs to be about 30”. Less would be too hard to move around and I’m afraid more would absorb a lot of planting area. Can you make any recommendations for this kind of project?

I am very interested in your course. Could you confirm if there is information regarding sloped land? We purchased our home last year, and I love it - but we have a heavy slope and when we had someone come out to give is a ballpark price for a couple of tiers of retaining walls at the back of our house to give us a touch of usable space - they said we would be looking at 40,000+. I know slopes put things on a different playing field, but we just had our foundation reinforced for half that price. Now I'm out here trying to DIY this thing lol Long story short, I wanted to know if this course would still apply for such a situation as mine (:

Do you have any tips on how I can get privacy on 2 sides at 90 degree angles of 2x 4 meters without widening everything and a natural garden feeling with herbs and edible plants? I looked at my front yard and researched plants for months before I decided on what to do. I wholeheartedly agree, planning is *essential* to ANY project. Same goes for my back yard, that I haven't really even started yet. I've been looking at it for about 18 months now. Researching plants, looking at where raised vegetable beds could go for best sun use, ect. I do know that 2 of the 3 sage bushes I bought recently will go in my back yard. I'm getting older and one very important issue is shoveling snow from my back door to where my car is parked in my back yard, off the alley. This, I have decided, will need to be a cement path. I don't want to be shoveling snow off 60 feet of grass when I'm 70. I didn't come to this decision over nite. I've lived in this house for 27 years. I also don't want to be mowing and watering turf grass any more, and certainly not as I age into retirement.

Good luck with your projects! I bought an earthwise 38 inch snow pusher this year from Amazon and a battery powered snow blower too. I’ve been glad I did. The snow pusher is designed for use on cement or asphalt, might be just the thing for your walkway and much cheaper than a real snowblower.

How hard is it to move a large sage bush? Can you offer info on how to move larger plants?

Sage the herb? Worth a try. I like to dry sage. I put it in a paper bag and staple it shut then place it in a hot, but not sunny area like a garage. Give it a shake every day or two. You can freeze it too. So I would harvest a lot, then dig up and plant and hope for the best. Sage brush? On the other hand …I’ve never tried to move. Deep …Massive root system… Personally, I’d reconsider …but best of luck!

What is the name of that invasive weed at 1.51 minute? I have a bit in my garden but it comes through from my neighbours and it runs under the soil and pops up everywhere. It won’t die even with glysophate/round up and I loathe using poisons. Please help.

The tendency is people want to bypass the design cost, but then, they start to make questions and require ideas, that typically require a graphic solution at no cost. If the people doesn't want to expend in design, still is possible to quote, if the customer define the areas and opinionate about the planting they wish in terms of colors, maintenance, interest, etc I have seen everything from customers that did landscape themselves doing big mistakes, such as planting the wrong plant in the wrong place or planting to near to poor selection of materials and drainage solutions. The end is, it is necessary a designer that has all the knowledge after years of study and experience. People doesn't go to a doctor and say: "I don't want to pay the lab test, and I want to pay an achonomic operation"

I’m a widow on a limited budget. I just had to spend $2600 to have 24 diseased Leyland Cypress trees removed from my back and side yard. An old wood fence must be replaced. My yard went from a lush green low maintenance yard to a desolate waste land. I’m overwhelmed with where to begin. Anyone have ideas? I live in a old neighborhood of small homes built in the 40’s pretty much on top of one another. So losing the trees I lost all my privacy.
