The hornline sounds great - yes two valves can be great - and the mellophones are exactly why I wanted to and did become a part of that line!

Remarkable, flawed, beautiful, and exotic in its own special way is the ensemble sound of the G bugle.

Thank you for this! Truly! I was member of ´84 Garfield Cadets Contrabase Line. That warm-up never gets old! I get welled up inside everytime I hear it.! I know this reads biased, but we had the best hornline in the DCI that year! That is why we were World Champions with nearly a perfect score.!

Man that’s so cool! I tried out in 1994 for soprano, made it but left camp in early June. Too hard for my chubby young self. I regretted it for a long time after but redeemed myself by gettin my nursing license in 2017 finally! I always loved the cadets since I first seen them on vhs in the 1987 show. Man how I do blast that cd in my house every so often in the mornings when I wanna get pumped up! Everyone , even my dad wonder “what’s that music”??? The out door pageantry and along with the intense physical agility that is accompanied by loud controlled brass movements takes me back every time! 1984 show is my FAVORITE! That’s for providing the BASS in that ZPull ending and throughout 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽

I went back and listened to this again tonight. For me, the most telling moment occurs at 2:52 when they begin to play the piece that none of us can seem to remember. But they treated it with the same respect that they held for all of the music in the shows. That is who they were. Those brass sections treated every piece of music put in front of them with utmost respect and played it to the best of their ability.

The G Bugle is an awesome instrument, it has a fat rich sound, it can be tamed but is best served up in your face. Perfect for Drum and Bugle Corps on a football field. In my opinion B flat instruments sound thin. The only way to overcome this flaw is all to familiar 50 yard line power block formation. I would live to see a corps go back to G and rip it!

We sometimes forget how truly groundbreaking that brass section was. In 85 they demonstrated their versatility by maintaining that marvelous control and musicianship while adding a ferocity that was necessary in order to pull off "Jeremiah." Great times in my misspent youth!

Those 85 reps sound mid season. Lots of changes were made. They still sound like a great hornline that's exactly where they need to be at that point in the season. I still can't get over the micro tuning in Maria from chord to chord. What a challenge and so well executed.

Excellent, excellent recording!!! And no compression!! What I like about this is when I compare it my tape recordings and you hear the crowd losing their minds (which they did back then) they recorded them in such a way that you can hear that hornline soaring above the roars. This is excellent sound recording isolation. (I competed from 1990-1995 in a small Midwestern corps.) Of course, though, those were g bugles mostly, not B-flat concert instruments. The sound was so much sweeter. It was MEMORABLE. I am very, very sad the Cadets folded for the 2024 competitive season. They were just getting back to their old form and getting closer to a top 3 finish... 😢

At 8:58 Is that the old form to end the show? Given the silks, it’s obviously the closer, but it isn’t the championship ending form.

It was a choral work Klesch had sung at West Chester. I remember the lyrics were May the Lord, Our Father Grant you And keep you May His face, May His face shine upon you May the the Lord, our Father Give you Peace etc… We played it in 85 at most warmups, along with a really nice setting of the 2nd movement of Clifton Williams Symphonic Suite. I remember that being one of the last things we played in warm up for Finals in 85. It was a very melancholy movement for age outs.

Drum Corps is G bugles. Bb/F is band. Going to band instruments for the weak argument of better intonation, kids playing on the horns and resale and killing off the identifying sound of drum and bugle was an error that should be corrected. It’s the equivalent to plastic surgery on Marisa Tomei (or nearly anyone). It takes what’s naturally beautiful as it is and change it because it’s not “measuring” “correctly”. Jennifer Gray technically looks more “correct” but doesn’t look like Jennifer Gray anymore. BTW, listening to Bb/F 365 is the equivalent to eating peanut butter and orange marmalade 365/24/7 (which Suncoast Sound basically did). #exaggerating #notbymuchthoug.

@@bandbowl8805 I would like to draw attention to the fact that this video is a highlight of one of the most revolutionary corps and hornlines ever and that tradition is continued by the corps to the present day. There were individuals that griped about The Cadets having this type of program in much a similar way you and many others gripe about which instruments are in the hands of the performers. Drum corps is not defined by the type of instruments being played but rather, the exquisite and elegant nature in which these extremely talented performers bring us beautiful and engaging musical moments such as the ones you can enjoy in this video.
