Okay - I had heard of Panzer World Galiant. Even enjoyed the theme song and opening animation. But never explored it. But I have to say - The animation on this scene is AMAZING - particularly for traditional acetate cel animation of the 80s on a TV BUDGET!!! I can almost feel the passion and sweat and missed sleep of all those animators getting all those cels painted in time to film it all for the episode to air! I've seen pictures of the studios as they worked back in the 80s - it was NOT glamorous at all. It was HARD WORK being an animator. I'm not sure if the rest of the show is up to these standards. It's not Akira quality - But DAMN, I'd put this up there with the best animation in the original Heavy Metal movie at least!

Gonna go ahead and be That Guy™ here. This is not from the TV series at all; rather, it's from the third direct-to-video special, "Crest of Iron." If you're going into the TV series expecting Yutaka Izubuchi's centaur mecha getting wrecked to look this beautiful, you're going to be very, VERY disappointed. The show itself is still pretty good, though.

”The animation on this scene is AMAZING - particularly for traditional acetate cel animation of the 80s on a TV BUDGET!!!”” Err, this is an OVA animation. Did you think Gunbuster was made on a TV budget animation?
This I have to look up, because this is my kind of anime. Mecha battles and wonderful old school animation! Great theme song, too--that piano riff is awesome, and it sounds like at least half the lyrics are in English? Definitely up my alley.
Can't believe this is from the 80's. What a quality.

OVAs tended to look amazing, because they didn’t have the constraints TV shows did.

@@TheShinyFeraligatr This WAS a TV show. Not an OVA. Mind - you might be right that there was an OVA version of Panzer World Galiant (The show) and that this came from that. But I know there was an actual weekly episodic show by that title and recognize the mecha from pictures I had seen in magazines and other info from that time.

@@logandarklighter Uh, no, this is pretty fucking clearly from the OVA, if you'd actually seen the goddamn show you'd probably know that pretty much immediately because the robot looks quite different. And also this never happened in the show.

@@TheShinyFeraligatr any idea where to find the ova, been looking but can't find it and don't really want to pay $165 for the boxed set to watch it.

Damn right this looks nowhere outta place in an 80s metal album. Just imagine Judas Priest or Testament making a concept album from Galient.
