For those who don't know Swedish folklore a troll is a being that resemble humans, Bergatroll refers to that she was of the troll breed that lived in the mountains. Young troll women was actually according to the legends beautiful but turned hideous as they aged, however they had a much longer lifespan than humans. Trolls could also do magic and was very strong physically.

I read somewhere that in the context of this story she's human but is referred to as a bergatrollet (in this context, "mountain witch" as, in old Norse, troll in certain areas means magical being) because she's a Scandinavian pagan woman, as Christians at that point associated paganism with heresy and witchcraft. @Blue cigar Gaming it was conducted out of the first 7 chapters of the Book of Proverbs. To warn the young men to hold tight to their moral compass which would save them from the many griefs that such a woman would bring to the unaware. There are many many of these trolls out there today! They seek the seed of good men. To destroy it pervert it and to destroy the souls of good young men! These are the women who want to later break away and take with them the child and seek after child support and break into pieces the soul of a man! It is indeed a warning! The opposite are the Black Rap and Hip-hop videos. That work hard to pervert the way! Which tempt young men to abandon their virtues and morality so that they can fall victim to Trolls/witches and through such works the enemies of this nation are destroying it from within!

This song i heard from my grandmother almost 50 years ago. It was indeed haunting. Because as s young person it is very hard to conceive of people being mischievious and malicious as a troll. A nonchristian deceiver who goes about tempting young men in order to extort from him and destroy his seed. It is a warning to the young man to keep his moral boundaries and cling to them for dear life! It is as a play conducted out of the first 7 chapters of the Book of Proverbs. A book written by a king unto his own son to give him wisdom.

That’s rather contradictory since the song is precisely about an impossible union between a knight and a troll given that the troll is not a christian, she is in fact associated to the devil and by extension the norse gods. So this song is more of an anti-pagan song than anything else.

And just why would they deserve Valhalla? To be admitted to Valhalla is an honor not a punishment.
@TheLittleJotunn5 жыл бұрын
First of all, this is a Christian song. Secondly - None of y'all going to Valhalla. Only those who fall in battle will enter the Halls of Valhalla and Folkvangr. They're both meant to only host warriors so that they can fight alongside the gods come Ragnarök. Everyone else just ends up in Helheimr - which isn't the same as Hell. Helheimr is just a mundane place for the dead. However, Naströnd is a place within Helheimr inwhere those who have been wrought with dishonour ends up. It is where Nidhöggr resides and its gates are made of snake spines, and people have to wade through venom in torment. It's the Norse equivalent to the Greek Tartaros. But in reality, most - if not all - of us are just gonna end up resting in Helheimr.
The best Swedish folk song, the lyrics are so beautiful. It's an ancient song that has had a few regional & era variants, this one by Garmarna is the 1877 version which was preserved in a state cultural preservation effort that year.

@Hüseyin Furkan Kardiyen Neil Gaiman's norse stories had some funny bits where Thor hangs out and drinks with some strangers for while and then suddenly realizes they are all 50ft giants lol but you're right that fairies and giants and trolls all look like humans and shape-shift or w/e. I read the lyrics here as both literal and metaphorical. A troll princess promises a handsome average Joe gold mines and horses and magic swords to marry her and he resists temptation, or a pagan human woman offers a Christian man marriage and her pagan knowledge/ways and he stupidly turns her down for his faith. I like it because it works from every perspective. To Christians it sounds like a good follower resisting all the nifty gifts of a forrest monster and to a pagan it sounds like the Christians will say no even to the most powerful/valuable offers if it doesn't fall in line with their beliefs. This interpretation makes it sound more like a tragedy from the Troll's perspective, which I think I would like a lot more than the other

Herr Mannelig (also known as Bergatrollets frieri "The Courting of the Mountain Troll") is a Swedish folk ballad (SMB 26; TSB A 59 = scholarly texts) that tells the story of a female mountain troll (bergatroll) who proposes marriage to a young human man. The troll is trying to convince "Sir Mannelig" (Herr Mannelig) to marry her. She offers him many great gifts but he refuses her because she is not a Christian. It's also implied that the troll is actually a pagan woman, and that the song symbolizes a young Christian man resisting material gain that would come with apostasy. ~ Lesson: Do not mess with trolls, they are always a NO! Peace & Health

What I understand: This Ballad is an important ballad not only in terms of musicology or literature, and also in terms of history, which was formed by the events that remained in the national memory of the Swedish people during a historical period (convertion to Christianity). I am Turkish. We have similar things. Also, emotions are always universal.

Early one morning before the sun rose up Before the birds began to sing The mountain troll proposed to the handsome young man She had a false tongue Herr Mannelig, herr Mannelig, will you be betrothed to me? For that, I offer you gifts very gladly Surely you can answer only yes or no If you wish to or not To you I wish to give the twelve horses [palfreys] That go in the grove of roses Never has there been a saddle upon them Nor a bridle in their mouths To you I wish to give the twelve mills That are between Tillö and Ternö The stones are made of the reddest gold And the wheels are covered in silver To you I wish to give a gilded sword That chimes of fifteen gold rings And fight however you fight [well or badly] The battle site you would surely win To you I wish to give a shirt so new The best you will want to wear It was not sewn with needle or thread But crocheted of white silk Such gifts I would surely accept If thou wert a Christian woman However, thou art the worst mountain troll The spawn of the Neck and the Devil The mountain troll ran out the door She shakes and wails hard If I had got the handsome young man I would have got rid of my plight.

Garmarna - Herr Mannelig Bir sabah erkenden, Güneş doğmadan Ve kuşlar tatlı şarkılarını söylemeden önce, Dağ trolü yakışıklı silahtara evlenme teklif etti Kaba bir dili vardı. Bay Mannelig, Bay Mannelig, benimle evlenmez misin, Memnuniyetle sana vereceklerim karşılığında? Evet veya hayır diye cevap verebilirsin, Evlenip evlenmeyeceğine. Sana on iki şahane binek atı vereceğim, Gölgeli bir koruda otlayan. You'll love serbocroatian then too, it has even more proper and consistent Rs than Swedish. Swedes sometimes ommit it alltogether like in sakerna or förska for example. Serbocroatian never ommits their Rs, has pleanty of them, and rolls it really hard. It also pronounces all other consonats really hard.

Lots of languages do that. (Russian being the best)... German, english and french are some of the exceptions.
@radunMARSHAL5 жыл бұрын
@@zeravara5007 false. Russian has a really soft R and is a really soft language with rare rs and rare hard consonats. It's a common misconception in the west that russian is a hard language, but they also ain't able to distinguish russian from other slavic languages. For example, Russians call their country rosIya, which is waay softer than swedish rySSland or serbocroatian ruSiya. If you listen to russians speaking, it's mostly ya sounds. Since they always break their consonant clusters and hard consonants with a to soften it up. Further more, they stress their words at the back vocals, serbocroatian on the contrary stresses forward vocals or even consonants. For example, the russian word for apple is yabOlko stressed at O, in serbocroatian it's yAbuka stressed at A. Try pronouncing it and you'll get the difference. For Rs, Serbia was in the middle ages called Serbiya and Croatia Horvatska. Todat it's Srbiya and Hrvatska, both stressed at R. Just look at these consonant clustersand try pronouncing that and then say rosIya stressed at I, you'll get the picture.
@zeravara50075 жыл бұрын
@@radunMARSHAL I never said it was hard or harsh to hear. I study russian, I can tell it apart from other slavic languages, and yes it is in my opinion very soft and beautiful because of the palatized consonants. But there is no doubt they roll their R's much like the singer here.

@@smirnoff9241 what did you mean by that? Trying to show me how hard sounding russian is? There are soft signs in two of your words. We don't have any of them for centuries now. The first thing we were taught in the russian course in elementary school was a russian song about a birch tree, in russian "biryoza". How do you think this sounds to someone speaking a slavic language where this word has morphed into "breza"? It's soft as hell and you russians sound soft as hell to us. Komnos family (as in your last name) have an interesting history, they were among the 300 spartan warriors, they were in Alexander's campaign, they travelled north to run from all the bloodshed, and then became Swedish Vikings, until one of their voyages took them back to Greece, where they settled. I just made this history up, but hey, it can be true, and ou can be a Spartan Viking eating Doner on an IKEA chair :P

There is a connection to the Balcans and Scandinavia. A realitively new theory says that the gepids had their roots in Västergötland. Their capital city in Balcan-Pannonian kingdom was called Sirmium in 6th c. What they looked like? The group Timoteij probably gives a clue..
@IllusiveSerb9 жыл бұрын
Håkan Liljeberg Well, we know the connection between Russians and Nords, but Balkan was always a bit of a mystery. Although our aptitude for fighting, reflects that of a Viking :D There are many theories, most are bollocks to me. But there is no denying that Serbs, came from "somewhere" north of Carpathians(records call this land "White Serbia"), and that Sorbs are in eastern Germany. In fact, the "Luzicki Srbi" exist to this day in eastern Germany, speaking almost the same language, even though they developed under a totally different influences. Who knows. History tends to be completely manipulated, hence why I rely on what I personally feel. Which is affinity for Norland. Sirmium is the old name for Serbian modern-day city of Sremska Mitrovica.
@hakanliljeberg7909 жыл бұрын
+Illusive Serb Yes, that the Sorbs are related with Serbs sounds logical. I did meet a woman who has a serbian father, she looked quite scandinavian, a little similar to the girl with the violin in Timoteij. PS That you feel connected with Northern lands doesn't have to be strange. I believe that we live many lifes, sometimes we remember much, but most of the time just feel an attachment. DS
@sasadimitrijevic70319 жыл бұрын
+Illusive Serb Connection between Slavs and Norse is just a wishful thinking. YES, we have some similarities with Norse, such as fearless warriors, but Gauls were too. And as Hakan mentioned, the look can be similar too (blonde). But during the centuries we (the Balkan people) mixed with the locals and how we rarely find people who look as should be. IF we presume that we are related with the Russians, than you can notice that Norse and Russians have no similarities in the facial lines. Norse are more "square" with strong jaws unlike the Slavic with the "round" faces. Even with the legends we have no connections with the Norse. But I admire the Norse history and mythology and in these days with the internet (in my time to get a new info was a struggle) just learning more and more everyday about them. And about the song, THE best "cover" of all. Maybe the Haggard's interpretation is next best thing.
@IllusiveSerb9 жыл бұрын
Sasa Dimitrijevic And you base everything you said on...? Riiight, data you have read somewhere that has to be true. If we presume? So we, as Slavs, are not related to Russians, who are Slavs? So Russians are neither Nords, nor Slavs? No connections? I know little, I'll grant you that, but there are connections. The cosmic tree, the thunder Gods... Sure, we mixed with the locals, why not. So where is this local culture? And if you start citing Deretic and how Serbs are ancient Spartans, I'll block you right away. You can feel however you want, and you can present your "facts" all day, but I am not interested in it. I already explained why I have no interest in the "facts". My skin is as white as snow and I long for the lost times and the highlands. If I was anything other than a Slav, I would be a Nord. Wishful thinking as it is. Slava.

A song of what cannot be. It takes me back to Norway and an old love who came from sweden. Unattainable love, a world in which we do not belong as they do not belong in ours. A beautiful woman true, but from her back brambles and spines of branches grow telling if her toll kin. She is between two worlds and sings a song of unattainable love, of loss, of regret and of hope. A good saga that borders two realms.

Lyrics in English: Early one morning before the sun did rise And the birds sang their sweet song The mountain troll proposed to the fair squire She had a false deceitful tongue Sir Mannelig, Sir Mannelig won't you marry me For all that I'll gladly give you You may answer only yes or no Will you do so or no To you I will give the twelve great steeds That graze in a shady grove Never has a saddle been mounted on their backs Nor had a bit in their mouths To you I will give the twelve fine mills That stand between Tillo and Terno The mill stones are made of the reddest brass And the wheels are silver-laden To you I will give the gilded sword That jingles from fifteen gold rings And strike with it in battle as you will On the battlefield you will conquer To you I will give a brand new shirt The lustrous best for to wear It is not sewn with needle or thread But crocheted of the whitest silk Gifts such as these I would gladly receive If you were a Christian woman But I know you are the worst mountain troll From the spawn of the Neck and the devil The mountain troll ran out the door She wailed and she shrieked so loudly "Had I gotten that handsome squire From my torment I would be free now" Sir Mannelig, Sir Mannelig won't you marry me For all that I'll gladly give you You may answer only yes or no Will you do so or no

All brothers are different but share the same blood. Throughout history , tribe migration, wars and conquests made these border but Germanic tribes were all across Europe. In my country lived the Dacians, Goths, Saxons, Mongols, Huns, Tartars, Magyars, Slavs. This happened in more than 2000 years of history. We are all related, you can search genetics and cultural background. If you study other European cultures you will find all types of similarities.

"The name Latin derives from the Italic tribal group named Latini that settled around 10th Century BC in Latium, and the dialect spoken by these people.
