Thank you for this. I use BC with an Oregon for hiking and mountain biking but this tutorial has cleared up so many frustrations - especially the alerting v non alerting via points - I have been so close to stamping on my device as it tries to navigate me back to a specific point that I had already passed. So useful. My life has improved from watching this!

Hey Rimmer D you are soooo right I've seen a few Garmin instructional video's and they are very lacking these vid's by Mr Byrne are absolutely brilliant, clear and explains everything in detail and points out the little nicks and bumps in the system and shows you how to get out of them. I wondered a few years ago why when I was touring the Czech Republic Garmin would suddenly take me down somebody's very long front drive turn me around and continue on my way !!!!!! I found out by being instructed by these video's so now I know. Very nice to see some more new ones coming on stream. Thank you very much Joseph Sir you are doing the world a great service and by doing so you must be increasing the world sales of Garmin so I think the boys there ought to "see you right" as I think the saying goes 👏👏😃👍

Pretty much all of my queries so far have been sorted and my Mac is very grateful as the likelyhood of it being thrown out of the bedroom window into the garden has now passed. Great thought out session for which I am very grateful. nice one, thanks.

Hi Joseph. Thanks for taking the time to present this tutorial. I agree with Rimmer D that you are doing a sterling job which i can relate to far easier than the Garmin videos. With your help I’m getting there, slowly but surely and with a degree of confidence I’m able to put a multi stage training route together and share with others. Yes it was good to see Basecamp and Garmin Express messing you around as well just to let us know it’s not only us newbies and our inexperience, if it happens to you then it’s certainly ok when it happens to me😂 I’m determined to get to grips with Basecamp so I can confidently and proficiently create routes but I realise it’s going to take a while and lots of practice and with your help through these videos I’m sure it will happen so I’m truly grateful for them. Many thanks

Joseph you are a hero! As with many other subscribers, we really appreciate your input, but what a package!……. This takes me back years when trying to deal with Window 98 problems etc. We are in 2021. IMO, Basecamp is awful. I am following your sessions hoping that something wonderful might pop out of this jungle of filing confusions. But alas, I take 20 minutes a day with you and slowly am working it out, well some of it. I’m on day three, I am listening very very carefully and cloning you on my next screen. Thank you again. Thanks for the best video's on the web for using BaseCamp. One problem I'm having is that I have North American maps on my European XT and it is not permitted to download them to my mac for use in BC. Using the maps in my XT connected to my mac is very slow and often hangs up. Do you have any tips to speed it up?
@JosephByrne

I've never found a solution sadly. I have the North American map on my European Zumo XT too. If you turn the map detail down that will help a bit but that's about all you can do.

@@JosephByrne I suspected you would say that. I'm going to plan my routes in Google maps and then convert them to GPX and import to BC as tracks then convert to routes as per your video. A bit long-winded but easier than direct in BC I think. The only other solution I could think of would be to buy a cheep US Garmin with lifetime maps and then I could download the maps to my Mac!!

Hi Joseph, Great tutorials. I am now getting the benefit out of my Garmin Nav 5 which was not always the case. Question: I have plotted a route here in NSW Australia following the coast, which works fine on the GPS simulator, and in reality. The route is approximately 300Km and goes through multiple costal towns. I use the dashboard on the Garmin to understand the time and Kms to a destination. Currently the dashboard only gives me the total time and distance (300km) based on selection of start point. If I insert a Waypoints in each of the major towns along the route, is it possible for the dashboard to display the time and distance to that Waypoint? Updating to the next Waypoint after passing through the last town. Thanks and keep up the great work. John M - BMW R1200RT
@JosephByrne
@JosephByrne 3 жыл бұрын
Hi John. Yes it's possible to do this but in order for the data to appear on the device the via points must be alerting via points. When you add alerting via points to your route then you can see data for distance to next via point and time on the device dashboard. To access this on a Zumo 590LM or Zumo XT tap the speed value on the main map. On the Zumo 595LM and XT you can also add this information to the trip data that displays on the right of the map, by adding the trip data overlay and selecting the appropriate fields within the overlay.

Hi Joseph very helpful videos and I am getting there slowly. However I wondered if you could help me. I planned a route clicking on via points as I went which has created a list. How do I then convert this to a route with a title of a start and finish point rather than just a list of via points on the left hand side of base camp. I’m on a Mac
@JosephByrne
@JosephByrne 3 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you've either not selected a navigable map or you are using the direct activity profile rather than motorcycling. Double click the route to open it and change the activity profile to motorcycling. The route should re calculate and present a navigable route. If it doesn't and just shows a load of straight lines then it is a map issue. Plug your device into the computer and it will load the maps on the device into Basecamp. Once that is done select a map from the device in Basecamp then open the route again, select the motorcycling activity profile and it will re calculate to a navigable route.
@andrewbooth4341

Thanks for the reply Joseph. I’ve plotted the route and it’s tracked the Rd nicely but I have a list of all the points I have made rather than a route which you click on and then it shows all the via points. We have a 7 day tour and my friend plotted it on his Tom Tom and sent me the GPX. Through your awesome videos I changed these from tracks he sent to routes on basecamp. However one of the days is corrupted so I just got his map up and then got basecamp up. Clicked where I wanted to start and then kept working my way along the roads till I got to the finish. This leaves me with this long list of points in the way that I am trying to get into a one line title like the others to send over to my nav. Ie DAY 6 from say Edinburgh to Wick just for example

Great video, I have learned a lot from it, thanks. I am not sure that I see the benefit of a simulation, in particular if you are simulating a 3 hours route while watching TV. What is it that can go wrong on the actual route, and you would detect through the simulation?
@JosephByrne
@JosephByrne 3 жыл бұрын
It's just an extra check. It helps you to iron out issues such as if the activity profile is wrong or if the route does something unexpected. It's the closest you can get to riding the route without actually riding it.

I’m gonna have to work my way through all these videos. Recent convert from TomTom and my first impressions are good but there is a lot to learn. Joseph has a great style and enjoying what I’m seeing. Have you done anything on Garmin Explore? I can see that being very useful - especially when away on a trip but it’s not very intuitive (pattern here I think)

At 52:20 when I was refining the route earlier and moving some of the via points, the ones I moved changed from non-alerting to alerting. I should have done a final check and changed them all to non-alerting before I sent the route to the device so that's where the confusion came from there. At 52:57 when I changed a via point on the device form Alerting to non-alerting it disappeared from the route. This is a software glitch. Via points are not supposed to disappear if you change them on the device. It doesn't happen every time but it did on that example and so the route changed shape completely. Also if you send a route to the device that was plotted on a map that was different to the map on the device it can recalculate and make a real mess with jagged lines going in all directions. If this happens you can fix it by editing the route on the device and changing the calculation preference. Change it from fastest time to shortest distance, this will make the device recalculate the route and it should correct, you can change the calculation preference back to fastest time and the route should stay correct. It's a glitch when importing routes that were plotted on a route other than the one that was on the device. Some additional clarity about simulating routes on the device. (I'll make a video about it soon). When simulating a route on the device if you select the start point as your next destination the device will navigate your vehicle from it's last known location (usually your house) to the start of the route and then navigate you around the route. If your route has no alerting via points and you choose the Destination as the next destination the vehicle will warp to the start point of the route and then navigate around the route. If your route has intermediate alerting via points then the route is broken down into sections. When you select an intermediate via point as the next destination the vehicle warps to the previous via point (the one before the one you've selected) and continues the route from there. So for example if you have a route with alerting via points and you want the device to simulate navigating around it, then choose the 2nd via point in the list (after the start point) and the vehicle will warp to the start point and continue from there. When your route has alerting via points, if you choose the end point as the next destination, the vehicle warps to the alerting point prior to the end point and navigates from there. As I say I'll show this in a video as it's not very intuitive (as I found out in this live stream) but once you know it's easy to work.

If I plot a 500 Klm ride and stop halfway for the night and turn off gps, does it pick up from same point or will it try and navigate back to start ?
@JosephByrne
@JosephByrne 4 жыл бұрын
If you simply switch it back on in the morning it'll pick up from where it left off. If you cancel the route (or for some reason it cancels) and you want to resume it half way there are a few options. If you have a newer Garmin device simply click to start from the *Closest Entry Point.* Then it'll take you from wherever you are straight back on to the route from the closet point on the route to where you are. If you don't have that option you can choose an alerting via point to start from. All the alerting via points you've plotted are available to use as start points so choose the next alerting via point that is ahead of you. You could also choose the 1st via point and then choose the *skip via* function on the device to skip the via points behind you. There are lots of ways to do it and all make it easy to pick up a route half way.
