Especially for those of us with flat aero bars. There are a few bells that can be mounted to them; but being able to trigger it with an electronic shifting button is 100%.

@@BJKeane-mc6bm I don't think Dcrainmaker should go as far as to make Decibel tests. I have a degree in acoustics, so of course I would find it interesting, but how are the viewers going to assert a decibel measurement? It probably would not be very usefull for most people. But I think it is a brilliant idea to make side by side comparison with other bells and maybe horns at different distances away from the camera and microphone. He could also go as far as to test it on a quiet road and in a busy city, to show the effect of background noise.

how often do you ride 20-30h? Let's say you ride 5h a day, and that is a lot and no one except of pros do this kind of volume. That gives you 4days worst case /p cycle. Now 4 days *500 cycles =2000days (do you cycle every single day?) to get to 80% of initial cpapcity and ~15h of battery life worst case. Your device will be long time obsolete before you will ruin your battery man :) Battery chemistry over time is another thing, but that's the same if you have 40h expected life or 20h so let's not dive into that right now.

Absolutely LOVE some of these new features. The ability to mark hazards/animals/whatever is really good. The challenges while in a group ride should really make things fun during group rides. I also love the fact that they've finally done something about the reaction time to gradients. So while I'll be sticking with my 540, I'll get some of those updates and that's good news. Is the Li-Ion battery replaceable in the 1050? Something that complies with upcoming right-to-repair requirements (EU, etc.) would be a BIG thing that would cause me to upgrade/switch! I'm getting so tired of disposable electronic gadgets that won't hold a charge after a few years...

@@aslam7952 I like your way of looking at battery life metric - total user experience vs. over expected ownership duration! This reminds me of electric car "range anxiety" as its batteries age. Something related that I think about is total cost of ownership. Even if a particular make/model price tag is $50 more initially, something that lasts one or more years longer due to better or replaceable batteries would make it a big winner for me.

Regarding screen brightness, this is not a cell phone, you only look at your bike computer for a fraction of your ride duration. So, nice yes but not so important, plus it bumps up the price and decreases battery life.

High screen brightness is important if you want to be able to view the vivid colours of the display in bright sunlight. I guess it's the same argument you have on the Fenix 7 versus the Epix 2, you can go with the Fenix if you want long battery and do not care so much for a good looking display, or you take the Epix if you want a really dam good looking display and don't mind that you need to charge it more often.

Hey DC, any idea if the Computer/Watch/Connect integration is fixed with this new gen? The x40 offers a bug where calories recorded and imported to Connect are superseded by a garmin watch, and I (and other x40 users) have never gotten accurate calorie data in Connect when also using a watch with Connect. Which renders training readiness features, and much of the ecosystem, useless. The line from Garmin for 1.5 years is “we’re working on it”. Can you shed any light on this?

I don't necessarily care if the computer is all that responsive or not. I have never really needed to cruise through the menus in the middle of my ride. But, the UI of the menus needs to come to older models. I'm running the 830 and it feels like I need a cartography degree to successfully navigate through the menus on it.

Big question for me is; Do Navigation and Routes actually work yet? It's very frustrating on an 830. 1) if you load a route, it offers to "navigate to start". If you pick yes, then it actually navigates you to seemingly the nearest waypoint anywhere on the route? Or maybe its that if the route it takes you on then touches the course at all, it flips to "route detected" and starts navigating you from the middle of the route. 2) If you start a route where the start and finish are the same place (a loop) and you start your ride, and maybe 500 meters in remember you forgot something in your car and go back, it now sees you are at the end and finishes your route. You have to restart the route to get navigation again. 3) If you have a route that crosses the same point multiple times (like a race that crosses the same water station a couple times by looping back to the same point) the navigation gets confused and will move you forward or backward in the overall route. In other words, if you have a 30mi route, and at 10mi and 20mi, you cross the same point, then when you get to the 20mi point in your ride, Garmin sometimes decides to start navigating you from the 10mi point instead. I basically haven't had a single successful navigation experience on my 830. Until Garmin makes basic nav work, and I can stop pulling my phone out of my jersey pocket to load Google Maps to see where I actually am, I don't think upgrading is going to be worth it.

@dcrainmaker - can you elaborate on the firmware tickle down part? Your table with the comments is saying that for the share feature as well as for the new gradient algorithm it’s unlikely to tickle down … but in the video you are showing a 1050 and a 840 sharing a track.

Ray, does the rider alert/hazard option allow riders to note changes to the surface? I ride a lot in northern Virginia and often the routes on RideWithGPS are badly wrong - imagine making a short sharp descent over a creek and all the sudden it's unexpectedly gravel. Oof! Happens a lot

I was waiting for the 1050 and your review to choose between th Karoo3 and the 1050. I'm still wondering but Garmin apparently hasn't change their really bad maps. I think the price difference is not justified to go for the Garmin, and even more for mtb ... 🤔
@better.better
@better.better 22 сағат бұрын
you would think when it comes to battery life, they would take into consideration bike tours and bike packing, and design one with a swappable battery, similar in concept to Petzl's Aktic headlamp series. that would also let them put a smaller battery in that is suitable for average rides, with less weight for those racers out there, and the adventure cyclist can carry extra batteries to make up the difference, possibly even with a stand alone solar charger that can be strapped to a bar bag to charge/maintain the spares. maybe even come up with a design that allows for an extended battery size, for those really long trips. NFC contactless payment does allow you to leave more at home, but is a security trade-off in the event that somebody steals your bike when the Garmin is still attached. I'd be curious to see what a pen-tester can do with one, how secure it really is.
@Dcrainmaker
@Dcrainmaker 20 сағат бұрын
The Edge actually has that, via the Garmin Edge battery pack, which slots under the bottom of the unit and snaps in place. It's been out probably 10 years or so now. The NFC payment piece requires a pin code still, and as for pen-tested, the same solution used by their watch has been tested many times (in order to get approval from the payment processors).

Why is garmin not optimizing font data size so the entire data window is used ? And why do they write data labels like « heart rate» so big in each window instead of just using a customizable size symbol like ❤️ or unit km/h °C or % ?
