Shane, thank you for this. Most of all it gives us the confidence to do these tasks. Just wanted to note I had two difficulties on the way. Connecting the battery connector - it is quite easy to have the terminal the wrong way round without realising it - red wire needs to be to the left. Also, found the battery replacement I had was a bit fatter than the original, which prevented the circuit board from settling low enough in the casing, which also then prevented the tiny 'on' button from pressing on the corresponding circuit board button, preventing powering on. It took a while to suss out why no power.
@matthewjctalbot7 ай бұрын
Good point. I'm colour blind, and wasn't even looking at colours! It's not totally obvious looking at the shape which way the terminal goes round. I'd broken the surround somehow removing the old terminal, so wondering why it wasn't fitting snug for a bit. Yep, it's worth taking your time here. Was Shane's snappy action a first take? I doubt it! Got there in the end. Good vid ta.

I pryed the circuit board up and gently cut the rubber bonding until it came lose. Also needed to clean rubbery out of the battery contacts. New battery in and working 👍 Cheers Dave Smith

Thanks. I was considering buying a 830 due to my 800 not having been used for 8-9 years while i was touring the world (with 4 years in Australia). It’s currently losing 16% per hour with speed sensor only! (Still decent for a device not charged once in all this time, but not enough for my tours.) Guess i can save a lot by replacing the battery! I’ll live without climb pro, though it’s a nice to have feature in the Swiss Alps. Cheers.

excellent how to. I run both an 800 (battery life still at 12 hours) and a 1000 and tell you I was shocked to see the 1000 battery life declining on ride, so still using 800 for epic rides.

Thanks for the demo - easy to follow - I just replaced my battery on my 800 but in my case no success. When my OEM battery failed my unit got really hot. I think this might have cooked the circuits, so a bit of a different case from just deteriorating battery life - still, I thought it was worth a try, since way past warranty and nothing to lose since the unit was not working anyways.

Just a heads up. I bought a battery and replaced it as per Shane's video. However, my touch screen now doesn't work. I don't think I damaged anything and have tried numerous times to clean and fit properly the screen connection. I did a factory reset but can't now use the unit because I can't get passed the page which asks to confirm language!. This is not a criticism of Shane, just be aware that this may happen to you.

It's very easy to dislodge the screen connection when closing the cover because the ribbon wire is stiff, it took me numerous attempts to get it to connect properly and the touchscreen to work again. Couple of Qs a) is there an actual reason for Factory reset related to the battery replacement, or is it just 'spring cleaning'? b) is there any way (technical specification) to know if the battery you buy has auto-shut off (house burn down protection)? WARNING !!!!! LIFT BATTERY CABLE UP AND NOT PULL TO THE SIDE One most important thing to mention. The difficulty in doing this is not the opening up or removing the battery but rather inserting the new battery. Ive replaced small batteries in computers etc etc and have had no problem. But this port for connecting the battery to is sooooooooo delicate. I had trouble trying to match the female connectors with the male pins and with a bit of frustration i pushed a tiny bit too hard and off came the female plug part from the device. So thats the end of that device. SO BE VERY EXTREMELY CAREFUL PLUGGING THE BATTERY IN SINCE NO ONE HAS MENTIONED THAT YET.

Hi Shane, i replace mine aswell some time ago, i think 1,5 years ago. I first tried to find a replacement battery with the same Mha but couldn't get one. I also contacted garmin if they could replace the battery or sell me one. What was i thinking, ha ha ha ha. Turned out that i could sent it to them but i would cost me the same as getting a new one! Talking about costumer service. So i did the same as you did and bought a third-party battery with indeed 1000Mha instead of 1100Mha. Replacement is very easy as you just showed. Afterwards while using it i found out i doesn't last as long as the original one. Especially when you use turn by turn navigation, wich i use when riding abroad. As you are someone with more technical knowledge than me, could this have something to do with the lower Mha? Another question, how does the bolt ellemnt compare to the 800 on the regard of getting tbt-routes on it. I'm using sites like bike radar and GPSies to find and download files to my 800. Thanks in advance for your answer. Btw like you channel!
@gplama7 жыл бұрын
Turn by turn and map display seems to chew through battery on all GPS units from my experience. To be honest, I've only used navigation on a bike computer a handful of times. 99% of the time I'll pull out my phone and look at Google Maps, so I'm not really able to comment on the comparison of this function. (Stick with Google Maps... and Waze in the car!) :)

I've thought about doing that to an old Android tablet. The poor thing is old, has been on far too many plane trips watching movies and running games, and I used to use it to capture footage of Android mobile games. It got to the point where the battery on it is so shot that even while plugged in and playing XCom (relatively intense for a mobile device so probably fairly demanding) the device will still lose charge. Looked fairly straight forward on a head unit which I'd assume is harder (smaller, more compact, less room to move around), I may give it a go with my tablet. Well past warranty. Battery is about 1/4 the price of a new similar spec and size tablet. Extra credit because I hope one day there will be a Zwift app for Android so that tablet will have new life for me if/when I'm traveling. Maybe get a cheap fluid trainer at my in-laws' house for when we are visiting during the holidays (no thanks riding on snowy Michigan roads that have no cycling infrastructure) and at least take one of their garage sale bikes and get a bit of a workout.

This is a fab video but I have got a bit stuck - hope someone can help. When removing the battery - the connection appears to have been glued to the base unit. Have others found this and what have you used to create an electrical connection in the form of a glue? Shane's video shows a black square to which he attaches his new battery but this is absent on my unit. Apologies if this has been addressed already in comments below.

It depends on your own requirements.... so what suits me might not suit you. Keep digging around reviews and feature overviews. Buy one. If it doesn't work out, then sell it and get the other.

Thanks. I dont need a lot of features, just a unit that works well and is easy to use. The Wahoo appears intuitive with the app, and based on what I understand seams to have a fast processor. I have noticed some complaints on the Garmins that they can "lag". Is this accurate in your experience?

This erratic behaviour is less present when its fully charged, but gets worse during rides as the battery runs down, so I was wondering if its voltage/power related and a new battery might fix it, or does it need a new touch screen (assuming they are available)?
