I just bought the 830 and I can’t wait to test it out on our local mountain bike trails getting back on the bike after 10 years, yes gradually. The jump height sounds like fun. Thanks for your updates. I look forward to them.

830 has interesting new features, but what about so simple things like total odometer and work with several bikes? Can it count total distance for a bike without training recording? It would be quite convenient for service intervals. Can it distinct several bikes by the sensors installed?

Great video! Sorry if I missed it but does the vo2 max feature require a power meter like on the older 520 models? Last question...is your video shown and real-time as you are scrolling and pushing buttons on the screen? I preordered the 820 for the touchscreen but hoping its responsive especially when wearing gloves or fingers are sweaty etc. Thanks!

Killer review! I think I need one of these. I find it amusing that it plots your VO2Max on a 7 day graph. There's controversy over whether VO2Max is changeable/trainable period (vs. genetically "preset"), let alone changing on a daily basis. Lol.
@DesFit
@DesFit 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! It’s probably just there as an additional data point to consider as you’re training to see how your body is performing during the last 7 days.
@indonesiaamerica7050

VO2 max changes. The only debate is whether each human's DNA has a "hardwired setpoint" or some BS like that. Obviously if you can pinpoint your absolute VO2 max and you see your tested VO2 max change (by using algorithms that look at heart rate performance correlated with power output, and also by testing on different kinds of ergometers, like treadmills, rowing machines, bikes, etc.) then it's usable fitness information. Just consider it "critical" VO2 max estimate, just as we do with "critical" or Functional Threshold Power. Neither value is infinite nor are they fixed in any absolute sense. They're synthesis tests. They quantify some aspects pertaining to how you are performing and help evaluate your competition potential and also help evaluate your preparation history. Also, the charts are guides. They don't even let you "check the math" behind it. Sometimes if you overtrain it will incorrectly think that your VO2 max is dropping when you're starting to get chronic overtraining or even extra stress that increases your average heart rate relative to power output over the recorded sessions. It also assumes that your weight entries are accurate and that you accurately enter your maximum heart rate. It's usable when you have at least a few weeks of daily data and you've done extended climbing (or at least 90% TT pace) and regular intervals that exceed your brisk climbing/TT pace. The best intervals for getting a good update come from "over/under" intervals where high work load lasts at least 3 minutes. Doing a FTP test of about 7 or 8 minutes when you're fresh will probably give you the best estimate, assuming you have at least a few weeks of data to compare it to.

I have to disagree. The Edge 830 is horrible at helping you navigate a new trail system. It can't keep up with trails. Maybe in very spaced out areas, but in the woods of NE, good luck. I bet you take out your phone.

Great video! Do you know if you can "Title" and add comments about your ride before it syncs ride data with third party Apps? For example, can this be done through the APP on the phone before you sync to Strava? I have a 1030 and haven't been able to figure out how I can "pause" my upload to Strava once the ride data syncs from the head unit to the Garmin App. Seems like it Syncs automatically and there's no way to "choose" the timing of the uplaod to Strava, Relive, etc. This question make sense?

Hey Des, I noticed that it seems like PhysiotrueUp did a good job between the two new edge units. What has your experience been like with it? Does it play well with a 935 and the new Edge X30s? Trying to see if I could get the new focus data from runs with my 935. Thanks for the great content! Don’t tell Ray, but your 945 video was more compelling than his. Pointed out a few things I hadn’t appreciated.

Thanks for your review. It all sounds good. Is there a change in the app and on the website in terms of precision / smoothing? I have a lot of trouble with my 645 in terms of smoothing the data. The website show me only every 2 second of data and the app is even worse. The app show me I'm jumping over a big double with 3km/h! But when I export the data and watch it on golden cheetah I can see all the recorded 1s interval data. ... and that I'm jumping with 36km/h :-) Is there a change or a hidden settings for not smoothing the data?
@indonesiaamerica7050
@indonesiaamerica7050 5 жыл бұрын
You're only getting 2 second samples? I've always had my settings at 1-second samples but most models have other options to keep the file sizes smaller. Did you check your settings? I haven't looked at the 645. The models that have "beat to beat" heart rate metrics have even more options. I'm not sure where to access the settings on your model. Here's an article on "smart recording" which basically means that it doesn't record at a regular rate. support.garmin.com/en-IE/?faq=s4w6kZmbmK0P6l20SgpW28 Choose the 1-second sample rate and then just clear it out when it warns you to. I have my files automatically uploaded to Garmin, Strava and Cycling Analytics. There's no way I'll lose my data - so for me - I don't care about purging the watch. It doesn't affect the online reports once it's uploaded.

Hi. I can't seem to find information about a following issue. I am thinking between the Wahoo Bolt V2 and Garmin 830. With the Wahoo it is all clear, since I have the V1. But I don't know if the following is possible with the Edge 830. Lets say I am navigating with a pre-loaded course onto 830. But half way through I decide to change the route, and need to get off the planned (course) track to get to one place. As I have read, I cannot upload new courses to 530/830 from a phone/app while an activity is in progress. But what if I select an address/POI or even a point on a map during an activity and selected course already? Will this work? Won't the current activity stop/end ?? Thnx

I have a Garmin Edge 830, and it has an irritating bug: WEATHER ALERTS occur randomly (i.e., in the navigation pane). It apparently affected many users for years (I found posts three years old...). It is impossible to disable on iOS (it turns back on constantly). It is NEVER helpful and is exceptionally disconcerting during MTB trails and Unsafe. Garmin support says it is trying to sort that out, but in the Garmin Forums, the users report the issue is. being ignored for many years. Straightforward, it's a deal-breaker and I wouldn't have purchased this device if I knew about it. How to solve this?
@JohnSmith-qn6wq

I recently purchased a Garmin Edge 830 - first purchase of a Garmin product. My display seems blur, in particular the the large text/characters in the main menu with white background. Annoying, a bit uncomfortable but not dramatic. I don't know if this is a defect or if I am used to better screen in general (i.e. iPhone). Are you experiencing the same?
@DesFit
@DesFit 3 жыл бұрын
The displays on most smartphones are AMOLED or OLED displays which consume a lot more power than the transflective displays found on Garmin Edge bike computers and most of their sport focused watches. Transflective displays are optimized for long battery life and easy readability in direct sunlight but don't have the pixel density that's found on smartphones.
@JohnSmith-qn6wq
@JohnSmith-qn6wq 3 жыл бұрын
@@DesFit The blurriness is more noticeable in low light environment (i.e. in the shade or inside a building) and when the backlight is on. When the device is in direct sunlight, the display/text become suddenly crisp. Makes a huge difference. Maybe some sort of anti-reflective or screen optimization for outdoor use? Have you noticed the same thing?
@DesFit
@DesFit 3 жыл бұрын
That’s due to the transflective display where it actually looks better with sunlight hitting the display 👍

I'd be curious to know if Physio TrueUp syncs your FTP, training load, load focus, etc. Otherwise, it's kind of annoying to be forced into using one device or the other. I don't see myself using the Edge indoors (when already using Zwift/TrainerRoad) and outdoors. And the classic issue for me of how an Edge would dovetail with a Fenix, which it sounds like maybe it doesn't dovetail at all... it's kinda one or the other.
@jmvdigital
@jmvdigital 5 жыл бұрын
Also, is there a cumulative "grit" or "flow" scores or only that graph? I find the graph not terribly useful, since all rides will likely have peaks and valleys, and that makes comparing one ride to another pretty much impossible. But with a cumulative score (kinda like Strava's old "suffer" score) it'd be way easier to use that for ride comparison, or bragging rights.
@DesFit
@DesFit 5 жыл бұрын
In theory, Physio True Up will sync your values from one device to another. I’ve seen some odd results though, however, with testing many devices side by side, it could be dorking things up just in my case. There is a cumulative Grit and Flow score along with total jump count on the lower portion on one of the screenshots of GC mobile and it also appears above the jump table in GC desktop on the MTB dynamics tab.

@@DesFit I've had a Forerunner and Edge 520 sync just fine ever since they added the feature. It just consolidates your data from the online account and updates the reports back on the compatible devices. The 520 doesn't itself show any special consolidated reports but the Forerunner 935 will update from the Edge 520 if it uploads any unique data not reported by the Forerunner.
@DesFit
