I am so old that I remember a time when a hot section engine overhaul actually cost more than the avionics suite. Garmin has found a way to reverse those numbers.

No doubt about it. Garmin is the leader in glass. So, why s their GPS devices for cars so lousy? We have become used to poor electronics in vehicles and just accept them.

Tony Koester I have been using TOM TOM GPS my first said ‘turn left in 1/4 mile, then the newer were far better, am on my. 4th , this one gives multiple lane guidance, speed cameras, red light cameras, As you say, the Garmin sucks, I know someone with one . Cheers from NJ

Great sales pitch, but where's the balanced viewpoint? It's shiny I get it. How much, how often (change), what cost/benefit, wheres the cost saving, what can I do new, why should I (and not 'cos it's shiny!)?
@AVweb5 жыл бұрын
"How much, how often (change)" We said in the video it's a half-million investment and we think Brown made plenty of examples of cost-benefit that actual owners agree enough with to drop that kind of dough, including fail-safe. A generator failure with the old setup means you're flying on the standby flight instrument in the middle of the panel. If you've paid enough flat-rate repair bills for a Primus 1000 (we talked to plenty who have, and we have been involved in some of these repairs) you would consider the investment. Same if you've used the Universal UNS-1 FMS and had a taste of a modern feature set. And as Brown said, owners like these specific airplanes for lots of reasons. It's cheaper to invest in a modern suite of avionics (along with other airframe mods) than buying a new airplane, while getting the same avionics suite that's in a new airplane.

Repairing 20 year old avionics will eat you alive over time. Plus, time is a consideration. Most people with these types of planes use them for business, so when you have an intermittent avionics issue, you take it in, they trouble shoot, put in a loaner part, go fly it, if it fixes it great....you only went to the shop twice and only had to cancel a few flights. However, I have seen people chase issues with these older systems for months and months....it get very frustrating when you are playing millions for the plane, 300k a year in salaries, 30k a year in training, insurance, hangar, subscriptions etc, then still having to fly airlines because of crap old avionics...half a million dollars start to sound like the deal of the century....
