I love the Instinct 2 Solar! I work construction outside so I get plenty of sun. Battery is normally at 70% after 2 weeks with full sun. Huge improvement over the Instinct, more features such as Vo2Max motivate me even more in training. Started running this year and already ran over 30 miles.

I'm planning to buy my first Garmin and this looks both beautiful and rugged. I mostly do trail runs and hikes, so is it possible to make a course on the Garmin app and then send it to the instinct 2? Also, sometimes I do like exploring trails so would it be maybe worth buying a model with full maps like the forerunner 945 or the fenix 7?
@ChaseTheSummit
@ChaseTheSummit 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, the Instinct 2 can follow a breadcrumb course from Garmin Connects course designer tool. There's no full mapping though. As to whether or not you need that it's up to you. I think 90% of people are just fine with breadcrumb mapping unless you're often wondering in the backcountry on unknown trails or bushwhacking.

So I always seen the instinct line as a more outdoors watch and with all the updates its like the other smart sport watches. I think if they stay with the same theme of outdoor, they could had added features like better field of view with your night vision goggles, (solar tac version) sync up with a ballistic chronograph, etc. This would had gain a different community of buyers. The GPS battery life is disappointing. There was a big improvement in battery life during GPS usage between the Fenix 6 and the Fenix 7 (36 hours to 57 hours), yet battery life is flat identical between the Instinct 1 and Instinct 2 (30 hours on both), so now the Instinct 2 battery life is only HALF that of the Fenix 7. Something was missed there. Pretty weird.
@ChaseTheSummit
@ChaseTheSummit 2 жыл бұрын
The improvement on Fenix 7 was due to a new GPS chip (also in the COROS Vertix 2). That chip is expensive so Garmin opted for the older (last gen) chip on the Instinct 2. That said, 30 hours is the minimum and with some small tweaks to backlight brightness, connectivity, and other features you can get more life than that from it without solar. Thanks for watching!

Have they finally fixed notifications so that messaging apps and SMS can display/preview the latest messages when there are two or more unread messages? This was so bad on the Instinct and Instinct Solar. You had to click into it on every single new message coming in until you mark it as read on your phone which defeats the object of a smartwatch to make life more convenient. Garmin told me this ridiculous behaviour is intended - but I see no reason why other than it not being tested correctly - why would anyone want to know about same same oldest message every time a new notification comes in? I've used 5 different smart watch brands and none of them operate in this backwards way.
@ChaseTheSummit
@ChaseTheSummit 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, this appears to be fixed. Now when you drop into a text message it immediately gives you the option to scroll up/down without an additional click. By clicking start/stop again it gives you the option to clear the message. Makes a lot more sense than the original instinct.

Thank you very very much for this comprehensive review. I have an instinct 1 non-solar and I'm totally in the market for an upgrade. I'm opting towards the 1 Solar over the 2 Solar for several reasons: 1- Much Cheaper 2- The 2 Solar is reported to be harder to see in low-light backlight whereas the 1 does not have that problem 3- I've seen multiple reports of some crashing and bugs with the new software in the 2 4- All of these new upgrades seem more geared towards running, which is not what I really use my Instinct for. I do Hiking, Scuba Diving, and (soon to be) Piloting, and it doesn't look like there have been any substantial upgrades to the GPS or navigation side of things to really justify the new purchase in my case. Have you had any experiences with bugs in your Instinct 2 Solar? The biggest thing I would consider the Instinct 2 Solar for is the improved battery live, but is it really THAT much better than the 1 Solar? Would love to hear what you think. : )

The battery specs are pretty similar between Solar 1 and 2 but there's a bit of an improvement on the 2nd gen. The real advantage on Gen 2 Instinct is the additional training tools but if you don't utilize them you might as well not pay for them!

This is a comment on your Garmin reviews in general, not on the Instinct 2 video. The Chase the Summit channel played a big part in my decision to buy a FR 945 last year. So far I like it. But there is one big thing I don't like about my Garmin: during a run you need to get almost all your information from your watchface (visual). Only hr and speed/tempo info can be directed to your headphones. This is annoying, I want to point my eyes to the horizon when I am running. Not on my watch! So I would love to have instructions about which directions I have to go when following a route, how far it is to my next destination and especially (with 8x40 second interval run for instance) when to start/stop which activity, combine that with a playlist (fast paced music while I am running, ambient in minutes of rest and a podcast while cooling down). At the moment I use my phone for those things. The OSMand app is excellent for adding voice directions to a gpx file and Tabata HIIT timer is a usable android app which adds headphone cues to interval training. Perhaps there are others (please add videos about good Garmin companion apps to your channel). Or are there running watch brands which provide better audio support than Garmin does?

I have the instinct solar, and it's completely useless when it comes to getting use of the solar charge. I get 0 days from it, knowing that I spend a good portion of my day outside. also, the watch doesn't reach the 24 days as advertised. you barely get 20. so I really hope that this new version will give you at least a couple of days with normal sun exposure. please let us know. much appreciated

Also how do the various GPS battery saver modes work?
@ChaseTheSummit
@ChaseTheSummit 2 жыл бұрын
There's no topo maps on board the Instinct 2. In terms of navigation it relies on breadcrumb mapping which indicates your trail, where you came from (like dropping virtual breadcumbs along your path). For a "full map" experience with trails, herd paths, and routeable POI support you'll need upgrade toe a Fenix, Epix, or 945. The breadcrumb mapping is very useful though. The Instinct can navigate on a bearing or projected waypoint if you find that useful. GPS Battery Saver will reduce the accuracy of the GPS sample rate along with disabling other sensors of the watch to extend the battery life in GPS mode. Hope that helps.

@ChaseTheSummit
@ChaseTheSummit 2 жыл бұрын
There's a couple of clips of the navigation feature in this video but they're brief. Essentially the Instinct has "bread crumb mapping". Think of it as if you're dropping virtual breadcrumbs as you move creating a trail/course. You can use this to navigate back to the start of your route and you can also load a GPX file into the watch to follow in the same way. When following a GPX / course the watch will alert you any time you wonder off the path. Hope that helps!

Good to hear that they fixed the issue with the barometer. I use my Instinct Solar 1 mainly for cycling and skiing and having a storm warning because of the location of the barometer port becomes a bit annoying. Hopefully they also managed to fix the notification problems with iOS 15, although that's probably more a firmware than a hardware issue. The better sleep analysis feature is also nice. The other new features are not that important for me.
@ChaseTheSummit
@ChaseTheSummit 2 жыл бұрын
The notification issue with IOS is more of an apple thing than a Garmin thing unfortunately. The phone will put Garmin Connect to "sleep" in an attempt to save battery life. I suspect Apple isn't in any hurry to help Garmin with this since they'd rather you buy an Apple Watch lol.

Battery life will depend on your settings and use case. If you get 1000 text messages/notifications throughout the day it will hurt your battery life. I wish they will upgrade the instinct 2 solar build for stainless steel buttons and back opened with small screws and stainless Basel in the front. Like the Casio Potrek prw 3100 which has great case . The solar is huge since as a normal watch you do not have to use external charger which is a major major major yes why to buy it instead of the solar protrek. If Garmin will copy the Casio protrek prw 3100 case to the instinct 2 solar you will get the best army watch . People then will go with Garmin instead of Casio leaving Polar and Sunto field watches far being also in regard to casing durability . Today the opening of the Garmin instinct 2 is not very nice since there are no screws . Though no one will probably open a solar watch still it is nice to know it has screws for opening as a standard .
