@@ac30428yeah, the gen 5 sensor is almost negligible in most scenarios. I have seen some videos where on cold weather and low light situations it doesn’t do as well, but it still does fine. Pretty much everywhere else it is within a couple of beats. The ECG is useful for my aging parents to catch a fib early and avoid a stroke. If that isn’t your demographic, I wouldn’t worry about it. Garmin's insistance on having 50 different watch models is doing more harm than good at this point. They are actively gimping their watches, taking away basic features so they could upsell you to the $1000 Fenix models... They should streamline their offering to a more manageable size, and focus on making those watches the best in their class, like all their competitors are doing.
@MVK_GS4 күн бұрын
You know what's crazy, though? Garmin stock soars to all-time high in the last quarter of 2024 (reported in the November 2024 investment call). Their fitness and outdoor watches led their profit performance. So, if their approach is a problem, Garmin does not notice.
@david168-d6f4 күн бұрын
@@MVK_GS interesting. Let's see for how long they can keep that up. At this point they are just repackaging 2-3 year old watches as "new" and jacking up prices. Meanwhile all their competitors are quickly catching up, offering great value at the $300 - $400 range.
@lustyd3 күн бұрын
I 100% agree with what you're saying, but I would still buy the Fenix even if it had an identical (software) feature set. Many people have and will buy the Instinct regardless of feature set too. People just have preferences on style. There's no way to sensibly put the vented titanium bands on the Instinct without it looking like a weird Casio Rolex Fankenstein. That should be Garmin's sales pitch for Fenix, nicer materials and more refined looks. It used to be that way with Forerunner 935 vs Fenix 5 but then they started backtracking. I'd also have bought the Fenix 8 if my Epix and Fenix 7 had the exact same software feature set. The dive sensor and larger screen were worth the price for me (although I'd pay them to take the speaker and mic away!). Their hardware gets better every generation but I don't think Garmin are confident enough to make the software stack standard. Better than they were, but still not great.
@paldepind3 күн бұрын
Personally I think it's the gimping and not the number of products that is the biggest problem (though the latter might also be a problem). Just as an example, let's say you like the looks of the Venu 3 but you also want full running stats. Well, then you're out of luck, because Garmin gimped the Venu by not giving it the full set of running stats. So even though they have a million watches it can _still_ be hard to find a watch that suits you, since Garmin also has a million ways to gimp their watches.

The Instinct 3 AMOLED is £389 in the UK. Once it’s discounted by 15% I’d happily buy it. The older sensors seem fine to me. Solar charging in the UK is useless 70% of the year. I’m not bothered by the lack of a touchscreen. i don’t expect maps at that price. I like that the amoled display is full screen and misses the round cutout. The rugged look is maintained and I’d pay an extra £50 just for the torch. Its one of the most used features on my Epix Pro

RE AMOLED Instinct -- I'm def in the MIP camp. I think us MIP fans enjoy the muted colors and duller screens. I feel like I'm being blasted with HD displays all day and the last thing I want is my watch to also be blasting me. And while we still have the choice, I don't think we'll have the choice forever (barring some specific circumstances). I think seeing that almost all of the latest garmin watch releases are going AMOLED with the exception of the Fenix, Enduro, and Instinct means MIP is either going to be a niche product in the lineup or nonexistent at some point. I know the FR 55 is still in production but I'd bet a dollar whenever the FR 65 comes out it'll be an AMOLED as well.

I can't think of any serious competition for the Fenix 8 that's cheaper. I can't think of any serious competitor come to think of it, the Fenix 8 is top of the game in sports watches right now. Hi guys, great comparison and thoughts segment. Just wanted to add that I'm a competitive mountain biker/hiker/runner/swimmer and I've been wearing the Instincts in various iterations over the past 7 years and the minute the Amoled version came out I was keen. I picked it up today and have been messing around with it and I'm sold. Still has the rugged feel, all the standard features and then some but that AMOLED screen is just amazing. It's also a lot snappier with the interface over past models. I've owned Epix Gen 2, Fenix 7, Instincts up to my last Gen 2X solar and this new Gen 3 Amoled just hits the right point for me. I wonder if the lack of touch comes from using defective screens in the manufacture process - instead of their supplier scrapping screens which otherwise display but don’t work for touch means they can potentially reduce total cost by not being as picky. And if they don’t have enough defective units for demand, just disable it in software to keep it uniform.
@adamluthfie75 күн бұрын
might be true. but i also think, it reduce cost since AMOLED is owned by Samsung. meaning that any other phone or device using this feature need to pay samsung for using it. maybe they can reduce this cost by disable the touchscreen feature

Not sure I follow? Both of us do extensive accuracy testing of these products. Frankly, nobody does as extensive accuracy testing as we do. (-Ray).

@thefitfile yup was proposing that these kind of reviews (along with the in-depth ones you both do in few months) be the gold standard so that price point click bait stops. One could go seriously wrong if they buy a low accuracy watch based on price point

For me the amoled display isn’t about this update it’s about what this means for the line going forward I don’t want or need thrills hence why I bought the instinct over a Apple Watch

So why is it that the Fenix 8 Solar is ~$100 more expensive than the Amoled model, but this relationship is reversed with the Instinct watches? Maybe something to do with adding touch to a MIP screen but I feel like that is a stretch. Also I feel like Garmin's strategy with the current generation of devices is way out to lunch. Hear is hoping they come out with a 47mm Enduro. Infact, whoever was leading the Enduro 3 project please give them a raise.

The reason why i move from Fenix 5x pro to 2x is: Torch, solar, batt.life, weight, NFC and some Fenix 7 features. This is the very "dont need" upgrade. I dont need amoled and touch. So, Garmin is hitting new generation and loosing it with prices. So from my point of view upgrade is very very questinable. In that range Trex 2 and 3 are better devices.

My partner is looking to get herself a watch, she doesn't really want to spend a whole lot of money just wanting some basic tracking for activities and steps etc. I was going to get her a second hand venu 2 or something similar but this active 2 is really making me wonder if waiting on the UK release for that is more sensible. She isn't tied into a brand and it feels like I'm pushing for her to get into the Garmin ecosystem more for me than her 😂 the only thing I'm a bit dubious of is the length of time it would be supported for but then again I expect a Venu 2 isn't going to be supported for much longer either (assuming it still is)

why didn't put the elevate 5 HR sensor ??? garmin are soo overpriced with the Fenix series .... they should have put the new HR sensor in instinct
@LesampaPeTute3 күн бұрын
I don’t think Garmin didn’t do proper market research or user requirements analysis. The AMOLED Instinct 3 has two problems: it doesn’t have maps, and it didn’t get the new HR sensor. However, hardcore hikers don’t use the Instinct; they buy the Fenix series, which comes with maps. And for those who aren’t hardcore hikers, they use the Garmin Explore app on their phones, which works in offline mode, so it’s not a problem. As for the older HR sensor, it’s not great, but the same logic applies as with the maps. If Garmin included these features in the Instinct, the Fenix 8 series wouldn’t have good sales numbers.

It will never happen, but imagine an Instinct 3X (color! MIP) with basically an F5X level of mapping, Elavate 5....

on the surface, i definitely don't like the price range of Garmin. but they know the quality of their product, that's why they confident with their price tag. lets be real, the only competitor with same quality with garmin is either apple watch or Coros. but apple struggle with battery while Coros is still struggling to convert their fitness watch to smart watch.

I have a few counterpoints to the instinct 3 criticisms. My first is, why are you comparing it to older models in terms of price? Garmin keeping older models on the market for dirt cheap is their most consumer friendly strategy. You always pay a premium if you must have the absolute newest model. Garmin watches typically last 5-7 years. I still have the original vivo active and an 8 year old forerunner. The active’s batter finally failed (left uncharged for too long), and the forerunner is still going strong. It’s great to inform consumers that due to new models the old ones will be steeply discounted, but to criticize the new model because the old one is now far cheaper is just misplaced. For the gen 5 sensor would be nice, but while most want ECG, very few people actually utilize the feature outside of the elderly. It is more accurate in some specific scenarios but is basically the same most of the time. Maps probably should have been included, but doesn’t out me off. If I am in a situation where I need a map, my phone is definitely with me and much easier to use, even for offline topo maps. Also, why not mention the durability aspects this watch has that other competitors don’t? It’s aesthetic? Those are all major pros for this watch. I love the discussion, but I thought those aspects of the discussion were either downplayed or missing entirely.

28:31 let's be real, it is no option, it's a forced choice: they will treat the MIP models as lower end in terms of software, as they do already and wtf is that mandatory orange accent with the Solar? (Non existent on the amoled, like people who like the practical MIP instead of the shiny battery eating amoled must be some weird freaks who want to just differentiate themselves from everyone else)

In your video you both said multiple times that prices of Amazfit are "too good to be true", that "they are too low", etc. But you take your rich country point of view. For the rest of the world this prices are not low, not even close to be low. Garmin, Polar, etc. prices are ridiculously high, almost mind boggling high to the degree I don't really know what I am paying for. Amazfit prices are still high for average non western consumer but they are somewhat manageable.

After 5 years in the garmin ecosystem of wearables, I made the switch to a series Apple Watch and then to an ultra 2. I don’t think I’ll ever be active enough to get back into the garmin world. The integration with the Apple world is too damn nice to ever give up. I’d imagine the majority of people with iPhones will have that same feeling in they ever give any Apple Watch a chance
@cubiq14 күн бұрын
How are you finding battery life? That is the biggest complaint I hear from Apple Watch users
@Checque4 күн бұрын
@ that’s definitely the biggest hurdle coming from a Garmin device (that and customizability of watch faces). You honestly get used to doing a quick charge during a shower every day. About 30 minutes a day will get you everything that you need. I’m using the watch about 1-1.5 hours everyday in GPS mode so I’m not an adventurer, but it’s more than enough for me. There are apps like Athlytic and bevel that will use apple health data and feed similar recovery data to whoop and garmin too.
@Bullet_19874 күн бұрын
I think so too. A little longer battery life on apple watch and Garmin is in deep trouble
@Checque4 күн бұрын
The battery life and the lack of customization of the watch faces are truly the largest negatives that I have found with the switch. The battery life is far more overblown for me though. My charging regimen is just take it off while I shower and that 30 minutes is enough for a full day of use for me (1 to 1.5 hours in GPS mode). The thing that I truly miss the most is the connectIQ store with the multitude of watch faces available. Being locked into a select few from Apple has been my largest detractor, but even that isn't really all that bad.

Most of the guys commenting here has 0 marketing and sales knowledge. Maps, last version of sensor and so on... Why not touchscreen... Bla.. Bla... Remember - this is a perfect entry level watch. If you want better, than you can have Forerunner, than Enduro and then Fenix. I had many friends buying another Amazfit-style rivals of Garmin... Now they all moved to Garmin.
@david168-d6f5 күн бұрын
All I want is a compact Garmin watch with maps on it. Is it too much to ask for them to put maps on the Venu in 2025? Garmin has like 50 different models, but they insist on gatekeeping maps only for their most expensive series like 965, Fenix and Enduro. Pretty much all their competitors offer maps on their $300 watches, and while still inferior to Garmin, they are quickly improving, while Garmin is just sitting in place, repackaging 5-year old watches as "new".
@david168-d6f5 күн бұрын
and no, a $450 watch should not be considered "entry level". At that price point you should expect more than a gutted Epix pro without maps, touch screen, smaller screen, older HR sensor, etc
@user19144 күн бұрын
@@david168-d6f Ive said that under another discussion- Check the smart watch from Casio, same money, what offers to the market. Lets say Rangeman GPR-H1000-9E. Then compare it to Garmin. As Im also long time Casio owner I can tell you- Casio solds out that series faster than hot bread in a bakery. Why? Because many people, like me, still want a watch not a smartphone. Im doing daily and week long hikes since 2012. Also I have like 150 days+ traveling abroad for work... Never asked myself "Maybe will be easier to have a map on my watch, than to open my 6 inch perfect smartphone and check it". Instinct is Garmin world without being unnecessary smart. If I miss maps, navigation, phone and so I will just buy little more expensive one.

If the instinct 3 solar has really illimited battery in ideal conditions, then the watch is great. No other brand offers illimed battery. If it had maps and last gen sensor, why pay double for the enduro 3? When Amazfit will make a solar illimited battery watch with latest sensors, color maps etc I will change my opinion.
