Great video, but for me it's missing the important bit. That is how to read and translate the screen and whether the watch tells me I'm going too fast or too slow during each "lap" or whether it only displays the target lap pace and current pace. I'd prefer something like planned workouts where I usually set the target pace with a buffer and then during the workout the watch pushes me harder or slows me down, there's a gauge at the top which tells me I'm too slow, too fast or on pace. Though I need the pace pro to do this and calculate times over a hilly half marathon.

i love how authentic this is. You're standing there and showing us from your phone. I am confused how to tilt my negative speed for nyc. I know the hills are at the bridges and that after mile 18 is likely when you should pick it up if you can. I can if I stay steady BUT surely time will tell.

that was very useful, thank you. The best part for me is just knowing how important it is to test this PacePro thingy out a couple of times before deciding whether to use it for a given race or just training run. If you upload a course-based PacePro strategy to your watch it locks you into where you have to then run that PacePro, just a fyi on that one.

I used it at London Landmarks, set to 1h 50mins. I came in with 1h 49m 59s. Definitely some luck there, given the GPS issues on the course, but I appreciate it as a guide for me as an inexperienced runner.

Great vid guys. I used it on a half marathon and decided not to use it for manchester marathon. Think you are spot on. It's just a guide better for hitting targets on shorter runs. If I am training for specific paces I use intervals and have it vibrate when I'm too slow or fast and find that brilliant on Garmin. Keep up the great work mate.

This is much more useful over longer runs - perfect for a marathon with hills. A 5k is too short to need to micromanage pacing and you just need to go hard. I’d recommend always running with ‘lap pace’ rather than current pace/instant pace as it varies too much to get into a rhythm
@MRegah

that's a good idea! so.. lap pace show's the projected pace of the current lap based on pace of the current lap so far?

@@MRegahyes lap pace gives the average pace of your current lap. You can set the auto lap length to any length, like 1km. Lap pace is a lot steadier than current pace.

agree. i am going to test my pace on my 10 mile taper tomorrow for marathon prep but its tough to map out where i'll need to factor in the slow downs on the hills and when not to go too fast at that 18 miles.

Normally the real distance that you run during a race is a bit longer than the race distance. Does PacePro take this into account?

@@Ligerpride it works off motion so once you have done a few runs and have it set up it will match distance incredibly accurately. It doesn’t rely on GPS data which makes it perfect through poor signals as the pace displayed is showing exactly how fast you are moving all the time. It’s particularly good through trials and built up cities

By coincidence I used this today for the first time. I found it to be quite useful. As much as anything else it was good to see where I stood versus a target that also considered any uphills or downhills.

I noticed the same issue as you guys in terms of the average pace required for the overall split as opposed to the average you need to be at until the end of the split. To be honest I wouldn't use it to that level of focus, I think trying to match to the target pace and go from there is probably the best way to approach it. I went with the option to pace by elevation changes rather than by mile or kilometre. This won't really work well on a flat course so in those cases it would have to be by kms or miles.

Another great video Chris. I loaded the route gpx pace Pro for Chester marathon in October on my 245.....was going OK then the GPS/ watch decided to have a fit and freeze around mile 6. Ended up having to turn it off as the average pace per mile option was wrecking my head....ahead / behind / on pace etc. Keep up the great work.

I use it for marathon’s & HM’s, very useful for pacing yourself in a race. However, I keep running too fast. I think that’s just me not being able to slow down. It’s supposed to give you a guide to how far ahead or behind you are but it doesn’t always work & doesn’t show anything. It’s like a race band but on your watch. I find it useful. Only problem is you become clock watching.

Just picked up the Garmin forerunner 245 for the specific purpose of using the Pacepro feature for my HM this Sunday. My concern recently is that I go out too quick at the start and hoping I can use the Pacepro to keep me in check. But the Garmin overall feels like an upgrade to the Samsung Active 2 I've been using in terms of dedicated running features and health tracking

@@FordyRuns one HM in the books with Pacepro and it's a PR! Tobey's right about setting up the plan and tinkering with it some before actual race time. To me the +/- time takes a lot of the guess work of how I'm tracking against goal time. And my race was already mapped out so I just downloaded it into Garmin connect. I set it to go easy on uphills and even splits. I think I'll look into setting positive splits next time to match my tendency to go out faster in the first mile. Will see next time. And an unscheduled potty break and my aid station strategy easily cost me 2 min and I could see it's effect in Pacepro +/- 😅

@lanternofthegreen
@lanternofthegreen 2 жыл бұрын
It is the most useful when you upload a GPX file or create a route so it knows about this hills. Then, you take the uphills and downhills for your splits, instead of every kilometer. This way you'll know what your speed should during climbing and going down. It is a really useful feature to be honest. But it is a hassle when you are doing a long run and have to create the route by yourself.

Can anyone tell me if the Garmin updates you via headphones during the run? i.e. if you are too fast or too slow? I've been training through the Garmin program and I love this feature as it really helps with pacing.
@lanternofthegreen

Not sure but compatible devices usually tell you if your heart rate is too high or low, if you are too fast or slow on targeted runs. I don't see why PacePro should be different. It probably lets you know through the headphones.

If you happen to get this I am curious if the Pace Pro strategy allows you to manually hit the lap button (at the mile markers for example) and move to the next split in the event that the GPS on the watch is off. The Garmin app talks about using your GPS location on the map as opposed to distance run... not sure if that means you won't need to hit lap or what... any experience?
@scottgillespie4781

@@Ligerpride I meant to post my question to your comment so I am going to add it again - does your comment mean that a person should not need (does not need ) to manually lap the watch at every mile marker to ensure that the split is aligned with the distance that I have run? For that matter does hitting the lap button even work for the Pace Pro splits.
