I'm relatively new to running... As an ex powerlifter my cardio consisted of lifting weights fast 😉... I never thought of the 5k as 90% endurance and 10% speed 🤔... I will definitely increase my long runs (slowly over the weeks) hopefully I will get faster I'm 47 too...
@ThatRunningGuy2 жыл бұрын
The long run is so important, just remember to run it nice and easy (ideally in zone 2). You’ll be surprised how quickly you will improve over the 5k Damian

Talk about it, I haven’t ran in days and I miss the vibe of going from 22 minutes to 17 minutes in the 5k and my 16th birthday is right around the corner

Great stuff! I've been doing mostly easy, with one faster tempo run per week. But I think I need to mix in some 5K speed like you mentioned. One thing I have noticed is that Garmin really doesn't like it when I do an easy long runs on a hilly route. I like doing this because 1) it's peaceful and I really like the scenery and 2) if helps me with my ability to maintain an appropriate effort level, regardless of terrain. I ran 11 miles this morning. All easy. Heart rate was in zone 1 most (85%) of the time, with some zone 2 (9%), never getting close to the top of zone 2. Garmin called this unproductive. Maybe because I do track runs once a week and this type of effort would have resulted in a faster pace at the track. Perhaps?
@ThatRunningGuy2 жыл бұрын
Sometimes it’s easy to forget why we run and become a slave to the watch. If you like running where it’s peaceful and scenic, then just turn of the heart monitor for that run. The reason your watch is saying it’s unproductive is you need to be running in zone 2 to build your aerobic engine on your easy runs. Not slower or quicker. And your faster runs in zone 4/5 depending on the session.
@alfromtx2452 жыл бұрын
@@ThatRunningGuy That's for sure! Once I started doing easy runs by RPE, I stopped looking at anything during the run, other than distance or time. So I guess I'm running these a little slower than Garmin would prefer. :) For faster sessions, it takes my heart rate a long time to get that high. I mean it will hit zone 5 at the end of a hilly 5K where I'm giving it everything. Or if I'm doing some 5K longer intervals towards the end of a long run. But it's hard to get there. Thanks for your response. Very helpful!
@ThatRunningGuy2 жыл бұрын
@@alfromtx245 on intervals and tempo sessions you will mostly be in zone 4 until fatigue sets in. If you doing fast reps/vo2 max session(200m reps etc) then you will hit zone 5 much quicker
@alfromtx2452 жыл бұрын
@@ThatRunningGuy Oh wait...I'm using the 80/20 zone classification. Their zone 3 is the same as Garmin's zone 4. So I set my zones up accordingly. In this case, I'm actually hitting the zones you suggested. At least on the faster runs.
@ThatRunningGuy2 жыл бұрын
@@alfromtx245 to be honest it can get very confusing even when using the garmin and other watches. It’s called zone 2 training but zone 2 should actually be between 60-75% max heart rate. So on my garmin it’s actually high zone 2 to low zone 3

My Garmin seems to think I’m much fitter and faster than I really am. It overestimates my goal times for 5k, 10k , HM and Marathon by about 20%. I was exhausted after an 18mile long run the other day and Garmin had it as unproductive! So I take my watch analysis with a pinch of salt.
