Garrard 30 Gramophone motor from SJD unknown machine

Very nice. I have one of these in a machine awaiting servicing. Just having 'fun' with a Garrard No.12 which has required more work than expected. Need to make a new non return spring for it now. Thanks 👍😀

I've got a black, single spring version Decca 50. The spring needed to come out since it was broken, I took it out but almost killed myself trying. The back half of the spring was still wound and jumped out at me, ACK!! I am most certainly not qualified to do spring work so I have three options; 1. Import new spring from England (money is a huge issue for me). 2. Send it to a repairman like Victrola Collector or Walt that can fix it for me (seems like the best option but money is still a huge issue). 3. Theoretically swap Garrard No.20 with a No.30 motor since the same machine could be supplied with either of these motors for different prices back in the day (Would save me money and spare me from death by spring but I don't know if this will work since the motors are different heights and they have slightly different spindles). Contact George Vollema at Great Lakes antique phonograph. Google will turn up his web page. Send him the motor, and the broken spring. He can put in a new one for you. www.victroladoctor.com/new-replacement-part-page/ I do not run a regular business repairing these machines, I just help from time to time when I can. I would just have to send George the spring measurements, width, length, thickness if you have a micrometer to measure it, and attachment style- pear shaped holes on the end, or bent ends, and so on. Do not swap your motor, keep it original and work with what you have as this is a common type repair, not major damage.

Decca, and Columbia ( UK ) used them, but they can show up in a variety of machines like the Crown that's in one of my previous videos. Garrard made motors for anyone wanting to build a Gramophone and who didn't want to get into metal manufacturing to make motors. Garrard did their job very well.

Hey I have one exactly like this. I took it apart and cleaned all grease off put it back together and can’t figure out how to make it spin turn crank but don’t want to turn it to break it. I didn’t take the barrels apart just cleaned the outside what am I doing wrong?

You didn't open the barrels and remove the spring for cleaning, this is the most important part of a motor service. It's also the most difficult if you are not experienced with the job. The governor may be in too tightly, or the bearings may not be set to align the governor correctly and it is binding up.
