My favorite thing about Garret is how functionality is more important than being en trend or “Instagram-able”

Yeah, the function over form is refreshing from a designer/decorator. Too rare. We had a home renovation designer do a plan for our house that wanted to remove most of the walls. We had almost no upper cabinets. And they wanted a cooktop in an island. NOPE NOPE NOPE. All bad ideas.

This video has some of your funniest Garret quotes ever! “Sometimes they look cool, and sometimes they just look like a cabinet screwed on the wall.” “Were you walking under the vanity to begin with?” “Are you that minimal that that don’t have anything?” 😂 Funny quotes aside, I agree that so many of these trends put form over function.

As a guest, the best thing a host can do for my comfort and peace of mind is having spare toilet paper in reach from the toilet. It can be hidden in storage near the toilet but should be fairly obvious. There's nothing worse than being at a party and not realizing there's not enough toilet paper until it's too late to get up and look in the cabinet under the sink. I love that you think about functionality and especially cleaning. My mother taught me from a young age, when looking at home decore advice, to ask "but who's going to clean that, and how?". My father was a building contractor and built most of the houses I grew up in. One of the first things my mother would insist on was that a vacuum cleaner head could fit on both sides of the base of the toilet.

I'm in the middle of a bathroom renovation at my home which includes... an open shower and a floating concrete sink! After overcoming my horror, I focused on what Garrett said about functionality and how things are used in a bathroom. Which is exactly what I did with my design. I'm probably a little older than Garrett's average viewer, and my home renovations are done with aging in place in mind. This not only includes being mindful of accessibility but also includes how easy it is to maintain. Who wants to grow old in a home you watch deteriorate? So, yes, I do have an open, curbless shower with no door. It helps that I live in Arizona and I welcome cool blasts of air on my body while wet and naked. In case that changes, however, I have a diverter on the AC vent to direct that air away from the shower. The floating ramp sink does have a small countertop area and someday (I hope!) I will be able to roll my wheelchair right up to the edge and brush my teeth without dribbling all over my blouse. I'll be able to clean the whole thing without stooping over, being able to see well or hiring a stranger to come into my home and do it for me. Would I recommend this design for everyone? Absolutely not. But for me and what I hope to be my many years to come, it makes complete sense and may allow me to live independently far longer than I otherwise would have. In the meantime it looks gorgeous and no one would ever guess it is actually designed for an old lady in a wheelchair.

Same here. We have a small bathroom, we are 60 years old and we're not going anywhere. We will be making our bathroom accessible for people with disabilities. Even if we never need that, we currently have friends and family who do. We want them to be welcome in our home. That will be a major design consideration as we update our home.

@@GarrettLeChic I have a tiny, tiny ensuite bathroom off my bedroom. It doesn't have a door, and there's no space to put a hinged door. I lived in a 800 sq ft cabin with my husband after we married. He built it himself. It was obviously the home of a bachelor with a busy social life and a full time job. It had a micro kitchen and ONE, yes, ONE closet upstairs in the sleeping loft. Not even a shelf in the bathroom, just a medicine cabinet and pedestal sink. From that experience I learned the importance of storage in a home.

Agree! I also don't like those bowl-sinks that just sit on top of the vanity/shelf, in stead of laying in the vanity. I feel like dust and gunk is gonna build up easily around the base on them and that the seam in between will end up looking gross quickly. Also, I don't like how it looks when you put your things around them. Looks messy to me.

I love the walk in doorless shower from a chronic pain perspective as there is nothing to step over. I love the hidden out of the way behind a wall style.

Sir, you are on fire! Thank you for saying functionality over fads and staying on the true design path. I’ll be closing on my 1st home in 2 weeks and your videos are my Eden.

I agree with your thoughts on floating counters. They are right up there with pedestal sinks.

I have a “Cinderella “ closet across from my bathroom vanity. It was weird to have a clothes closet in the bathroom, anyway, so we installed as much shelving as we could to create almost floor to ceiling storage. It holds everything I need, from makeup and hair care products, tools and accessories, all within arm’s reach of the mirror and counter. I did this same thing with an extra linen closet in a previous home. I love keeping the clutter organized and contained and behind doors. It makes the space feel serene. Another super useful video, and I laughed through most of it - please give us more tirades!

Ha I laughed my ass off! Thank you for being so straight forward. I’m going to be doing my bathroom so this was very helpful! I don’t think I even want clear glass shower enclosure, it always looks so messy when I am at friends houses, again you can’t hide your stuff! I’m going to stick with the ribbed glass even if it is a little old fashioned.

What I learned from this video: always ask “why.” Unless you are trying to make a high art move where the answer is, “because it’s cooler that way,” a grownup should understand why things are the way they are in their home. Thank you Garrett, for your instruction that you share freely with such high quality content. Just know that this girl appreciates you!
