Thank you for putting this together and sharing your analysis / breakdown of the images. I think some of the comments regarding whether what was captured was intentional or not are essentially pointless, simply because your explanation of what’s taking place is insightful and beneficial in helping understand why the images work. Especially for those who might not have a photographic eye and are hoping to have a better understanding of why some photos stand out.

Hi Jerry Thanks. Yes I think it is more about how the image works rather than the 'did the photographer think this through before clicking the shutter'.

Along with HCB, Winogrand has influenced me the most. Bresson's work is graceful and composed, Winogrand's raw and chaotic, both producing highly provocative imagery on the fly. I wonder if their major haunts (NYC, Paris) had anything to do with their styles. Two major cities with different temperaments and pulse.

Hi Phil That's a good description of those two photographers and I think you can actually feel the difference between the cities - the classical beauty of Paris compared with the raw power of New York must generate different responses in photographers that are sensitive to the what is around them.

You mentioned Winogrand's books in your reply to Paul. If you were buying your first one which would it be? Looking forward to another selection and your walk/talk through them. Glad to have found your channel.

Hi J Thanks for the comment. I think the best curated Winogrand book is: Winogrand - Figments from the real world.

The human brain is wired to look for patterns. Gary is quoted saying that he took photographs to see how they would come out, and that he didn't premeditate the results. Essentially his art was as an editor. I think a lot of his praise comes from those that want to elevate snapshots to high art. That endeavour unfortunately, lowers the bar to the banal.

To be honest it does vary depending on what I am working on - but Stephen Shore, Robert Frank are definitely in there.

Mmm not so sure. He was able to approach his subjects in a simple manner, because he had a sophisticated knowledge of how an image works.

Sorry, I mean no disrespect, but these are (to me) just over-analysed snapshots. Sure, they're nice images but certainly nothing special. If Joe Average had taken them, would they be appreciated so much? Of course not.

Hi Paul, Shock, horror...I am just getting up off the floor - such disrespect for my hero!! Kidding! You are right in that he was definitely focussing on the ordinary and he wasn't trying to make the photographs impactful in any outward way. I challenge you to look through a good Winogrand book (not the badly edited, post-death retrospectives) . For me, he was an astute observer of the human condition, who was prepared to present his work without any bling.

@@andras_ikladi Hi Andras A fellow Winogrand enthusiast...welcome. John Szarkowski is probably my ultimate hero from that period - he was prepared to go way out on a limb to promote good work.

@user-et1el8zw2h Well said, I agree. The same can be said for many famous photographers. Bartier-Bresson created some wonderful pictures and he must have waited hours for his 'decisive moment' with each of them. But not all his phographs were groundbreaking.

@77-ca-1-76 Hi Just a thought. It might not be that he was thinking all of those things through when he took a picture, but his brain might have been trained/wired to pick up patterns unconsciously.

Winogrand’s association with MOMA, particularly early on, seemed a strange choice given that Harold Feinstein was producing far superior work in the 40’s-50’s around Coney Island. Feinstein upsetting Steichen might be a reason. Indeed Winogrand was copying Feinstein and failing terribly in every possible way. It’s very hard to justify the idea that he is remotely a top 5 photographer given the illustrious pantheon before him and since.

Any three points creates a triangle. The closest thing to a 'perfect' triangle would be an equilateral triangle, which it isn't. The over-analyzing nonsense contained in this video is the exact sort of pretentious crap you specifically claimed he despised.

I get that historically he probably changed things, but with an eye of 2023, it looks a lot like random pictures of random people. I do thonk that the picture with the balloons was great. But so far, i not impressed with what i saw.
