3-Point Landings in a Tailwheel Cub

Landing at the minimum possible speed -- in the full-stall configuration -- is what 3-point landings in a Tailwheel airplane are all about. Hold it off... dissipate any airspeed you brought to the runway... and when the wing stalls, stick all the way back and keep it going straight with the rudder.

Good video! I have a Stearman and a Cessna 195 and can easily get the nose up and touch noticeably tailwheel first. That's my preferred technique, working the stick or yoke all the way back to the stop. The airplane is done flying, and it's not hard on the tailwheel as some may think because that's not how the physics of a center of gravity work. There's no more force on the tailwheel than if/when all three wheels touch at the same time. I will say, I wheel land them regularly too. These old airplanes are a lot of fun!

Thanks for mentioning that we are to keep focusing at the far end of the runway. It makes s huge difference and prevents porpoising.. .

You could use a vintage wood prop on that cub (25 years flying a '46 Luscombe 8A).

Beautiful, thanks. Another useful tip is instead of trying to land, fix your gaze at the far end of the strip and try to fly as far as you possibly can down the runway, keeping it level. You work the stick gradually further and further back to keep it flying and when it can't go any further back you'll find yourself magically on the ground (though it can be hard to see forwards in many taildraggers once the nose starts to come up).

I like the idea of trying to land on the tailwheel first too. It's also good that you use the word float instead of flare. Using the word flare gives students completely the wrong idea.

Get in the rear seat where the pilot belongs in a J-3 Cub and you can land the tailwheel first, as you should. It will also cruise about 5 mph faster with you in the rear seat (less aerodynamic download and drag on the elevator).

Can't reach the radio (or the Carb heat) from the back seat :) Fuel tanks in Legend Cub are in the wings, so you can fly solo from either seat!

Yep, Citabria 7ECA will land tailwheel first with Two people in it. In many airplanes this will not be possible.
