Hey Ermanno, just saw this video. What are your thoughts on BTRFS ? I know it is good and has various features like extensive checksums , scrubbing and ofcourse snapshots among many others. But benchmarks shows file transferring rate of EXT4 is way ahead of BTRFS. For fast file transfers ext4 maybe a better choice but for backups BTRFS can be good but doesnt always guarantee the data. What would you prefer as the default FS on any linux distro?
@eflinux3 жыл бұрын
So for me it really depends on which machine and for what purpose. On my main machine I like to have a mature filesystem like ext4 or xfs, as my main focus there is stability. I thinks btrfs will be the fs of the future but it has some things it still needs to be worked on. It has a great set of features and I am sure more discos will switch to it in the future

I left Windows for Garuda Dr46onized Gaming release 6 month ago, it is the first distro that inspired me to take the step over to Linux. Still I consider my self a noob and a GUI user but im slowly learning commands and how to use the terminal... Now im running my pc on four screens without any issues what so ever, customized about everything possible and it looks awesome!! After detoxing from Windows software I now use only opensource software, that took me some time, it was har letting go of the programs ive learned to master... Today I manage all my needs on my Garuda system, grahpic design,gaming, banking and all officelike tasks. I can very much recomend you to try Garuda!! I only found it after trying 25+ distros and at that time was scared of leaving Windows, you will probably find everything youre looking for in Garuda!

Great video!! Garuda is excellent for its target audience. BTRFS was designed for massive enterprise installations. It is slow on home desktops. DJ Ware did an excellent comparison of file systems. F2FS shines on home desktops with SSDs and is what I use on all my systems. Snapshots can lull people into thinking of them as a real full backup. It is much better to create a full system image or functional clone, plus extra backups of irreplaceable files in Home, configs in etc, and the like.

autodefrag is on in fstab and u are using an ssd. Is that ok with btrfs ? Because with ext4, I heard it's bad to defrag an ssd. In documentation of btrfs I can't find an answer for this!!!
@eflinux3 жыл бұрын
As far as I know, it does not damage that much. Ou have also the fstrim timer that you can use with ssd.

@@eflinux I heard there is a new discard option called discard=async which sounds interesting but only works on kernel 5.6+. My question is like is it recommended to keep that autodefrag option on or should I not use it on an ssd. Is there any advantages to keeping autodefrag option on?
@eflinux3 жыл бұрын
I don't think is necessary.Because Btrfs is CoW, the process of defragmenting will write the new bits in a different area, causing unnecessary wear.

Have to admit that Garuda looked very tempting to me at first, it's feature rich out of the box and I personally think nearly all the DE flavors looked good and modern out of the box. But after spending some time reading a few of the threads with issues over at their forum I think it shows that this is not yet a very mature distribution and requires further work before I would consider adopting as my daily driver over Arch. The mods and creators seem present in the forums and want to be helpful in resolving problems which is good, but they do come across as stretched a little thin to deal with the influx of new users as some of the provided solutions are things that the user has stated as already attempted. Also the solutions provided comes across as "quick fixes" for that single user to apply to their specific system rather then addressing the root cause issue in the distribution itself via updates and sort the problem for the larger mass. At which point a user might as well stick with plain Arch in my opinion. Or go with the more mature Manjaro distribution if you they're looking for a batteries included experience, despite whatever other issues that distro might have.
@eflinux4 жыл бұрын
I agree with you, it needs to mature. It needs time and I hope they are going to work to fix issues with each release. It is a young distro.

Gnome ran butter smooth on this card and as I'm a gamer I need the performance in my games I was seeing random fps drops that I never see on manjaro gnome so hoping the gnome version performs better otherwise I think I'll stick with manjaro gnome rc2

@@eflinux Good morning from Montreal EF. The Gnome Version does not install onto my desktop. However, the KDE version did justice. I cannot use the non-free drivers, as my nvidia video card is 10 years old. I guess I should buy a replacement for the card. With the free type drivers, installation was a nightmare. Transparency and hovering on spots invoked software that I was not interested to have. And here is a problem I encountered. On /dev/sda I installed the KDE version. I did want to try the gnome version so I retried the Gnome version on /dev/sdb. Within the bios it ended up replacing the kde version. There is something that Gadula does to complete the installation that results in a single entry for the product within the bios. There was to reviews about Fedora 33 that were posted today. My comments to one reviewer was as harsh as his review. Read that review first. May I suggest, if you plan a review, to visit the Fedora website and choose the Everything-Network install version. It has lots of options to appease distro tweakers. On one installation, using that Everything version, I have installed Gnome,KDE, mate,Cinnamon, I3, Xmonad, xfce, and more. And they all work with btrfs, which is the Fedora default. Apology, With the corona virus and the situation, I am not able to subscribe for regular financial contributions. I so much enjoy your videos. One request. when editing, take a breath pause between segments. Thank you..

Hi Leslie! I did record that video yesterday following your suggestion and thanking you for the tip:) I did install Fedora 33 with i3 and went through some changes. To me, what is important is how the distro feels and works and that's where I'll focus :)

Arch-based distros (and Arch itself) are rolling releases with the latest kernel and software packages, whereas Linux Mint 20.1 being based on Ubuntu LTS uses an earlier kernel and therefore receives fewer updates.
