Okay, let's break down that last question: Gaul wasn't a city, it was a large region of Europe corresponding to modern-day France, Belgium, and parts of Italy, Germany, and the Netherlands. Constantinople didn't exist in 218 BC; it was previously called Byzantium, and was only renamed Constantinople in 330 *AD* -- in honor of the Emperor Constantine. So that leaves only Rome and Syracuse, and Syracuse was on a small island off Sicily...not exactly a place where Hannibal could easily take his elephants. So that leaves Rome.
@KyrieFortune Жыл бұрын
Syracuse wasn't (and still isn't) a small island, it was one of the most influential Greek colonies in the Mediterranean at the time, powerful enough Carthage recognized it as a rival more than Rome before the Punic wars, and it was in fact besieged many times by the Carthaginians - it's that by the time Hannibal walked toward Rome, Carthage and Syracuse had become allies instead
@seikibrian8641 Жыл бұрын
@@KyrieFortune Read my comment again: I didn't say Syracuse WAS a small island, I said it was ON a small island. Compared to all of Italy, and especially to all of Europe, Sicily IS a small island. And compared to all of Sicily, the province of Syracuse was smaller still. It had an area of about 2000 square kilometres (814 sq mi), and comprised 8% of Sicily's area.

Its weird how a lot of times on the American version, the real big money questions seem easier than the questions around 16k-64k.
@GeoGuy3883 жыл бұрын
Yeah, a lot of the big money questions tend to be academic questions that are easy for anyone who paid half-attention in high school/early college. The 8k-64k questions have a lot of very arbitrary pop culture questions that are easily mystifying to anyone without the appropriate interest in whatever the relevant subject (be it film, a certain genre of music, sports, etc.).

The correct response to Robby's infamous question from 8-20-1999: What are elephants? (This was also asked in episode 3-061 of Catch 21; the contestant who buzzed in answered correctly.) In addition, this was asked on the December 6 2023 episode of "Split Second", not to mention the number of elephants involved was 37 and Hannibal was fighting against Rome.

I think the last question wouldve been easy for anyone if they knew General Hannibal Barca was a leader of Carthage who always wanted to conquer Rome. ^^

That $125K question was a joke. Further proof the writers thought every science question was mind-boggling.

The $500,000 question was also astonishingly easy. It was so easy that I thought it had to be a trick and second-guessed, thinking maybe Constantinople was the correct answer.
