My sister and I went to the Glitter Xmas show a few times - absolutely bloody brilliant! An amazing night, and the energy he puts in at his age was incredible. The Glitter Band as you say were also top class, and it's them I feel sorry for, now. Never again will they be able to play as the Glitter Band, because people will always associate them with GG, even though they were just as horrified as the rest of us, if not more so. Such a shame. The music was of its time, but so many mega hits will be lost now because people will always think of GG and his crimes. I still can't believe it... Ffs, he could have had his pick of women back in the day... Wtf makes someone do something like that, so awful there's no coming back from it? Sigh.

Not everyone did. At 49 years of age, I am old enough to remember most years of that decade (the 1970's) fairly well.... and, unless I am very much mistaken, there were many birds in this country who much preferred David Cassidy and/or Donny Osmond to Gary Glitter. What is more, there were a few other 'pretty boy' pop stars in the 1970's who outshone Mr Glitter in the 'looks' department, as well; apart from the aforementioned American heart-throbs (Mr Cassidy and Mr Osmond), there was Marc Bolan - the strikingly handsome lead singer and main man of T. Rex - and Les McKeown of the Bay City Rollers .... the tartan-clad band from Edinburgh who engendered mass hysteria in teen girls, some 40 years ago. I would even say that there were a couple of guys in The Sweet who were probably more handsome - by conventional standards, at any rate - than Gary Glitter. No one would deny that Mr Glitter was one of the biggest pop/rock stars in the land for a couple of years or so - back in the early/mid-1970s - but the fact remains that he never had the quite the same amount of bird-pulling power and sexual magnetism as Mr Cassidy, Mr Osmond and the other guys I have mentioned. That said, there is no doubt that Glitter was a fairly good-looking, attractive chap when he was young and in his prime. Back in 1973 - or even '77 - when he was an 'A' list celebrity with a whiter-than-white image, hardly anyone could have foreseen that he would one day be convicted of serious sexual offences against female children and young teens. How the mighty are fallen!
@geekpie10010 жыл бұрын
william kinch Yes I agree, Cassidy and Donny Osmond were the pinups on girls' bedroom walls. Glitter aimed at a different demographic. It was OK for lads to like Glitter (and Slade, Sweet and Mud): testimony to that is that this song was a favourite football chant for 20 years. It was only recently that Leeds fans stopped singing, "Hello, Hello, United are back".

@youjoker96476 жыл бұрын
People forget, the real talent behind GG was Mike Leander. On all of the early studio recordings, you're hearing Mike play all of the instruments apart from the brass section. GG or rather Paul Raven was hired in the latter part of the 60's by Leander with a view to turning him into a successful act. Mike was responsible for generating the sound & directing the image. He even hired the band that became GG's tour band The Boston Showband which became known as first the Glittermen, then The Glitter Band when they started releasing their own material. Interestingly, Leander was the producer that the Beatles requested to take over the production on 'She's Leaving Home' when George Martin wasn't available. Leander doesn't get enough praise or recognition for his production. Things like the double drum loops etc had never been done before. It's amazing that people like Bill Wyman got away with openly admitting having relationships with 13 year old Mandy Smith but got away with it. I suspect there's heaps more from the era who are just as guilty as Glitter but who've gotten away with it. GG was a total moron though. After his prison sentence for all those images on his PC, rather than just keep his head down, he went & moved abroad to openly abuse young kids, which showed he was a predator who couldn't control himself. Of course like many perverts he blamed others !

Mike Leander doesn’t get the credit he deserves for creating the GG sound.

Gary Glitter was a struggling musician called Paul Raven in the 60's. He released 3 singles 2 of which George Martin produced. They were flops. He became an assistant & warm up act on 'Ready Steady Go' in 1964. Wasn't until early 70's he became very famous as Gary Glitter even then only because of Mike Leander reviving GG's career & producing smash hits.

stevobath What is your point exactly, sir? That because Mr Paul Raven (aka Gary Glitter) was not an overnight success in the pop/rock music industry, one should therefore conclude that he was not a talented man? May I remind you that many of Rod Stewart's early releases (including a single called 'Good Morning Little Schoolgirl', released in 1964) sunk without trace. In fact, Mr Stewart did not achieve real fame and success until October 1971, or thereabouts - when his classic single "Maggie May" and album "Every Picture Tells A Story" were @ number 1 in the UK (and US) charts simultaneously. By that time, he had been active in the music business for the best part of a decade. I would not put Paul Gadd/Gary Glitter in the same league as Rod Stewart - in terms of talent. However, it is clear that he did have SOME talent..... and the fact of the matter (whether one likes it or not) is that for a period of about two-and-a-half years - between the autumn of 1972 and the beginning of 1975 (approx.) - Mr Glitter was at the forefront of the British glam rock movement, and one of the biggest stars in the land. Of course, that does NOT mean that I condone the serious crimes - of a sexual nature - which he committed against female children and very young teens after his days as a glam rock icon had come to an end. In fact, I take the view (as do the overwhelming majority of people in the United Kingdom) that some of the crimes which Glitter committed were sickening and absolutely disgraceful. That said, one should remember that just because he is a somewhat unsavoury character (a depraved and despicable nonce, some might say) with paedophilic tendencies, it doesn't mean that he had no talent, or that all the hit records that he made during the 1970's should be dismissed as musical garbage. I realize, of course, that what I have just written is not likely to be well-received by members of the Politically Correct fraternity, but that does not mean that my point is not a valid one.

william kinch My point? Tony 74'sbest stated GG was 'huge in the 60's'. I just pointed out, that no he wasn't & gave a little info on his pre GG days. Where have I said he wasn't talented? I'm a huge fan of GG & have been since a kid. 1st record I purchased was 'Remember Me This Way' & seen him on at least 5 occasions. I don't see why you're getting uptight & certainly haven't a clue as to what relevance Rod Stewart is to the comment I left? Don't drink & type if you're going to make an argument out of nothing. As for him being a nonce. I feel sorry for the kids involved but also 'The Glitter Band' whose name has been tainted by association , oh apart from that arrogant twat Pete Phipps.

stevobath "Don't drink & type if you're going to make an argument out of nothing." Well, sir, I must confess that, that comment did make me chuckle for a second or two..... because, as it happens, I am an ex-alkie. BUT I have not touched alcohol/intoxicating liquor since 10th February 2014, and was therefore stone cold sober when I wrote my previous 'post' on this You Tube discussion board yesterday. There is a slight irony in that.... don't you think?! From what I understand (having read your response to my comments of 8th Nov. 2014), you are a fan of Mr Glitter's music - which is fair enough. As I acknowledged in my previous post, the dude did have some talent - the fact that he subsequently turned out to be a sexual abuser/nonce case notwithstanding. I do not, for one moment, doubt your sincerity when you say that you have been a huge fan of GG since you were a kid. That said, anyone who has read your previous comments ('posted' about a week ago, or thereabouts) about Mr Glitter could surely be forgiven for thinking that you do not rate him particularly highly as a musical talent. Your exact words, sir, were as follows: "Gary Glitter was a struggling musician called Paul Raven in the 60's. He released 3 singles 2 of which George Martin produced. They were flops. He became an assistant & warm-up act on 'Ready Steady Go' in 1964. Wasn't until early 70's he became very famous as Gary Glitter even then only because of Mike Leander reviving GG's career & producing smash hits." See what I mean, 'Stevobath'? (Your comments - which I have just quoted, verbatim - could hardly be interpreted as a glowing tribute to Mr Glitter's talent and accomplishments in the pop/rock music industry. No offence.) Oh..... and just one more thing, sir: I entirely agree with what you wrote in the final paragraph of your latest 'post' on this You Tube discussion board: "As for him [Mr Glitter] being a nonce. I feel sorry for the kids involved but also 'The Glitter Band' who name has been tainted by association , oh apart from that arrogant twat Pete Phipps."

william kinch Well he wasn't getting anywhere until Mike Leander took him 'under his wing' decided on a name change & new musical direction. Just stating facts. I didn't mean it to sound so negative or indeed be taken as so. Oh the 'typing & drinking'...just sarcastic 'humour'... BTW , congrats on your' sobriety. I struggled with multiple addictions for years. Alcohol not so much But have seen so many friends succumb to its 'charms' or rather lack of! I sincerely mean that too. Hard to give up any addiction , alcohol being possibly the hardest, as it's everywhere? Best wishes. Stevo.
