Gary Gulman is one of the reasons I am still alive. During one of my darkest periods, I discovered his comedy and was able to laugh for the first time in a while. He also made me feel not so alone in the world, and was so for long in denial that I even had depression. I’m so happy to see him on one of my favorite podcasts. Thank you, Gary.

That's awesome, so happy you two are still here. When I in dark times romanticized with it (don't mean to simplify the complex matter that is depression with the term "romanticized", you get it), something that I over the years forced to remind me of is that a survey showed (don't hardpress me on the source this was atleast 10 years ago) how basically 9 out of 10 people being asked about this and with 10+years since they wanted to do it, were so, soooo grateful they did not go through with it. And that's were it gets really heartbraking imo, how many teens have comitted suicide because they felt they will never be able to climb out of that hole? I'm not saying it would've been 100% a good outcome if those young people had gotten the right help at the right time, but it just makes you wonder, it's tragic really. Anyone reading this, you're not alone, even if you feel like it. That phrase sounds like a cliché, but it's the truth. It's really a commendable progression that this topic isn't even close to being the taboo it was 30/40 years ago.

Every time I start spiraling (also because of a chronic illness) I use his joke about forkprints on ice cream (evidence of a life in chaos) as a smoke alarm. I used to let things get out of hand because I wouldn't admit to myself the situation was serious, no matter how bad it got. Now if I eat ice-cream with a fork I ask for help immediately

The bit he did on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert….about depression had the audience laughing so hard. How many of those who related were really suffering from depression either now or at some time.

As a long time, depressed person, and a long time Gary Gulman fan, it fills me with great joy to know that Gary got ECT months before what I considered to be the best Conan standup set that I’ve ever seen.

Gary Gulman is another shining example that even the funniest, sweetest, most genuine humans can be going through turmoil we can't even fathom. Please, everybody, if you notice you're putting yourself down a lot, it's likely your brain's inner chemistry, and you should absolutely seek help. You're worth far more than you think, and countless people in your life would love to see you succeed. Do it for the most important person in your life: you. You deserve happiness. 💜

For me, the "abbreviating the states" bit is perhaps the funniest thing ever. Good to see a little background, seems like a genuinely great guy and getting comedy props from Conan is high praise

One of the most extraordinary things about Conan is how well his fans see and recognize the frequency with which legends in their own right sit down in front of Conan and end up being pudding in the podcast chair as the guest proceeds to tell Conan what an inspiration he's been to them. This has got to be one of the most exceptional full circles I've ever seen.

As someone who's been struggling with mental health my whole life, particularly this last few years, and still very much in the thick of it, hearing this makes me hopeful and gives me some much-needed confidence (also, I've been expecting Gary as a guest pretty much since CONAF started, so this episode makes me really happy)

Saving he gave on himself but kept trying things is telling that he never actually gave up. Ive known people who ACTUALLY gave up including myself... theres a big difference between having to will to even humor a try vs laying down on train tracks ya know? That being said still good for him and its still good to hear for a ton of folks.

I've said Oi all my life (and by all my life I mean even when I was 3 years old). What's odd is I grew up with zero Jewish people around me ( not friends, family) and no one else ever used the term. So as a little kid, no one has any idea where I picked it up from. I have no idea either! It's weird, because from the beginning of talking, I'd say "Oi Vey" all the time.

Well, I suppose, there are different forms of "oi": A lot of British people, for example - mostly the younger ones... if they shout "Oy!" at you, you better run. Because they don't leave much room for context😆...
@malenotyalc10 ай бұрын
The Brits also use oy but spell it oi. They sound very similar, and it is such an effective word. It seems the Brits use it more as an aggressive attention getter. While the Yiddish is more a disappointed expression. Because I'm forever curious, I looked up the etymology of each word. Oi comes from hoy (old English) meaning look, to get one's attention. oy (interj.) Yiddish exclamation of dismay, 1892, American English. Extended form oy vey (1959) includes Yiddish vey, from German Weh "woe" I find it so interesting that different cultures come to the exact same sound for entirely different meanings. But fitting. English were definitely aggressive, and the Jewish people faced lots of hardships resulting in exclamations of disappointment/woe. If you read this far, congrats on being a fellow word nerd and simultaneously a fan of great comedy.
