I think the Dream Corrosion live album had been copied by Numan from the VHS, and not in a high quality way. Someday I shall get my hands on the original VHS audio, and then hopefully substitute it. Stay tuned :)

I wonder if that's also the case with Cold Warning and the White Noise live album. It's a shame most of these albums are so hard to get a hold of and cost insane prices now. I lucked out into buying most of the early NUMA albums on CD years ago, but the ones I am missing run for crazy prices - Sacrifice and Dream Corrosion specifically. I have the original gold disc printing of the Ghost live album, lucky winning on Ebay one night many years ago.

Lots of energy in this concert. Bought the VHS around 96 as my first marriage was collapsing around my ears, helped alot. I'd actually written Numan off many years prior to this with my last ever vinyl purchase which was Outland. He's done amazingly well to resurrect his career because it really did seem all over by 92.

Life is about highs nd lows .. stayed with Numan, throughout.. And aI think he has said, it made him a better person and an even better music artist. Yes, some tracks .. made me wince back then ... BUT I would do it all again.. to get where we are now.

I was a huge fan until he descended into electro-funk and singing like a drunk as the 80s wore on. It just wasn't music I wanted to listen to. I reconnected with "Pure" due to reading an interview with him in the Metro newspaper (proof that PR does work, heh) and have been a fan again since. I can now go back through the "lost years" and enjoy a few of those tracks in the context of his whole career, but I couldn't be loyal at the time to music I simply didn't enjoy.

He exorcised some ghosts on this tour. The album and period in general was never as low as Numan thought. If he hadn't gone through it Sacrifice would never have happened. And that was the start of his climb back to credibility.

Apart from the classic album tours, nothing else beats this set list since. I bought this on vinyl, cd and VHS back in the day and still listen regularly and it blows me away just how much variety there is here. I'd still take any album from Berserker to Outland anyday over anything from Sacrifice onwards. Even Machine and Soul is a much better single than anything he's released since.

Oh my gosh, thank you so much for re-uploading this! This may have been the lowest point in his career, but this concert rocked. Great mix of everything up until his rebirth with 1994's Sacrifice. Can't remember where I read it, but apparently, Numan had planned to release an album in '93.
@metalsergs
@metalsergs 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, he and Kipper planned to release some sort of a sequel to Machine + Soul. However, in 1994, Gary decided to pursue a total change of direction with Sacrifice, so all the previous demos were scrapped. Apart from one, which was turned into a proper track and released later as a bonus. Its name is ‘Metal Beat’
@skinmech4851
@skinmech4851 2 жыл бұрын
An album was been worked on called "Vicious" but it wasn't a follow-up to Machine & Soul at all. It was always intended to be more rock-orientated with synths. He was about to sign to a subsidiary of Virgin who suggested whilst "Vicious" was been made he recorded Vocals to his Radial Pair soundtrack as a stop-gap. The majority of which ended up being "Sacrifice". Soul Nation who played on this Dream Corrosion tour on additional guitars and percussion and were responsible for the 1993 Cars remix did work with him on the "Vicious" album with an unheard version of the demo we got "Metal beat" and a few others. Kipper worked on Play Like God, Love & Napalm and Scar. Some of his contributions were stripped from the final album including Play Like God didn't make the album. As we all know the record deal didn't happen neither did his 800,000 advance so using musicians on the album were out of the question and with listening to his then future wife he threw out Sacrifice instead (which personally still sounds like a bunch of horrible sounding demos)

Amazing show. A lot of fans seem to hate this period, but I don't. He made some great albums during his Numa Records phase. Berserker is one of my all time favorite records and I think it belongs up there in conversation with his best albums. Gary wrote 'My Breathing' during that phase, which IMO is his best song of all time, and it sounds amazing here starting at 1:41:20

There were actually two Numa ‘phases’ (1984-1987 and 1992-1995) with an ‘I.R.S.’ phase in between. But I agree, plenty of stuff released under Numa Records has been underrated due to the label’s unpopularity and two shutdowns

@@oliverrickard9970 let me correct you. Gary asks the band what parts they want to play of each song. the parts the band do not want to play get put on the backing track. the laptop isn't just there for the 'Backing track' its for the sound changing on the keyboards and guitars. back in these days the keyboard players would have to manually change the sound but now its all in a click of a button. the laptop is a good thing. it makes the gig a whole lot easier so before you go accusing gary of not playing any of it just make sure you know what you're talking about before you say so.

@@JacobsMusic115 in fairly aware what I'm talking about considering I operate synthesiser on a daily basis! What I was saying is, (and apologies if it came across the wrong way) is I like the sound of the actual synthesisers played by humans, and that nothing is computer generated so that it is literally played off on the word go. I also don't like his sounds he uses now, with added effects. He has 1 man playing a midi keyboard which has sounds that intend to replicate the classic numan 1979-85 sound, but in my opinion fail. I understand the part of changing the sounds and how it is easier when it's done by a computer, but wheres the magic in that? Synthesisers can be connected up as midi keyboards so why the hell is he using recordings of spaceship engines to play his classic tunes? I have been to a gig of his and have enjoyed it, but I must emphasise that nothing sounded like a human being was playing due to the fact most of it wasn't. I like the rawness of the old live versions and how sometimes there were mistakes, but that's part of being a musician isn't it. How do you expect to replicate the sound of 4 or even 5 people on synths with 1 man on a midi? As I said I'm not intending on being rude, but surely the easy way isn't always the best way.

Let's look at the statistics. 2 songs from the instantly-repudiated preceding album. 3 songs linked to Metal Rhythm/New Anger (his previous comeback attempt). 4 songs linked to Outland (which for some is his real nadir). 1 obvious/failsafe choice from the "real" Numa years. And that leaves 16 songs - one-six - from his [first] golden era. Well, of course this is the kind of setlist one prepares, when planning a potential-farewell-tour. (We know that announcement wasn't just a Bowie/Hammersmith joke)

Oh dear... Not the greatest period in Numan's career. Closer to Slade than to Nine Inch Nails. I probably saw this show in Newcastle but I've wiped it from my memory. The audio mix is tinny almost to being unlistenable. as for Kipper's contribution, he's not Rrussell Bell is he? During this period, Duran Duran hired Warren Cuccurullo (ex-Zappa), Bowie hired Reeves Gabrels, Numan got a guy named after a smoked fish.

@@slumdogjay He's re-recording Sacrifice, Exile and Pure together with his frequent collaborator and producer Ade Fenton. The intention of the project is not to make the albums sound radically different, but mainly to improve the recording/mixing/mastering quality. Quoting: "Gary: What Ade has done so far on those albums is brilliant, so much better than the first versions. I mastered [1994 album] Sacrifice and made an absolute cock-up of it, so that needs to be re-done. It’s never been heard the way it should be, and that’s my fault. I really want it to come out, and I’m embarrassed I’m the problem with delaying it. Ade: It’s important to say that I love those three albums. Sacrifice was a pivotal moment in Gary’s career. Thanks to Gary and his wife Gemma, Sacrifice turned the corner from Gary’s preceding years. What I don’t want to do is my interpretation of those songs, so that it sounds like an Ade Fenton tribute to Sacrifice, Exile and Pure. It should still sound like the originals, just to modern-day production levels. For instance, the drum loops on ‘Deadliner’ are the same. I’ve only reworked them so they sound hi-fi, where you can hear everything going on."
@slumdogjay
@slumdogjay 2 жыл бұрын
@@MechaGodzilla Be good to hear how they turn out. I completely understand why he’s doing it. Exile and Sacrifice sound like demo versions rather than finished works. Understandable as he was recording at home by himself at the time on a 12 track recorder. I do hope they don’t do too much to Pure though.
@MechaGodzilla
@MechaGodzilla 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, all three of those albums have this sort of rough, homemade, almost lo-fi sound to them. Which, as you say, makes sense considering the circumstances. Each sounds better than the last; Exile sounds better than Sacrifice and Pure sounds better than Exile, but Pure still has a bit of that muffled quality about it. Personally speaking, I always thought this added to the sort of charm and atmosphere of them. But I'm still looking forward to these new versions, and perhaps it's for the best that the albums get this new chance at sounding their best. Exile is my favorite Numan album, so I'm especially excited about that one.
