@sector603 - From his first time on Top of the Pops with Are 'Friends' Electric. The song was awesome, but it was probably his appearance that fascinated me at that point. I just connected with it. Wish I could relive those times.

Sometimes when I'm sleeping, I can hear your song Sometimes when I'm dreaming, I forget that you're gone Now when the wind cries, I remember you Now as the world dies, I remember you Sometimes in the silence, I can hear you scream Sometimes in the darkness, we are not what we seem Now when the rain falls, I remember you Now as the end calls, I remember you Broken, the hearts of them all, at the end Broken, the beauty and grace, now long gone Broken, the heart of the world, at the end Broken, the whispers of shame, our children Sometimes we're scared of the dark and who waits there Sometimes we're scared of the truth and what hides there Sometimes we are what we fear in the end Memories are all we have when the last breath comes Moments in a life that has now come undone Sometimes they warm you, like a long lost friend Sometimes they calm you, like the oceans end But sometimes they break your heart

Pre-ordered this in January with my last few quid. Finally taking off as a Science Fiction author now and I have you to thank Gary. Your music is a constant inspiration. A couple of years back I was asked about writerly influences at university. I had Bowie, Jarvis Cocker, and you. Your work transcends the simple boundaries people draw between poetry, song, novels, short stories. It exists beyond all that. So whilst I may not be a songwriter (tried as a teen but got carried away with novels) you are one of my greatest inspirations. Your lyrics have kept me going, kept me pushing to graduation, and continue to keep me pushing now. So thank you for all the art you have poured into the world!

I've also been listening to Gary since "Replicas" was available on import here in the US. This is a superior song, but boy oh boy, the lyrics are very close to home for me. I hope the new US tour is successful! I had the pleasure of meeting Gary twice back in the day, including once when I interviewed him. His dad was managing him them. He and his dad were two of the nicest people I ever met.

Same guy. His previous album "Savage" actually does tell a post apocalyptic story that's quite interesting, about a guy who comes to be known as "Ruin" and his quest to recover his daughter from a bunch of religious fanatics called the Righteous, who are a cult based on a few pages of the Bible they've scavenged... the worst few pages you could get. This one is kind of a sequel, but where the earth is basically taking over again.
