I have to admit, I hadn't seen this before and haven't seen Gary Richrath in years and it's very hard not to be taken aback by his appearance when he first walks out on stage. But, then I watched this whole video and, by the end, I went from that feeling of being a little bit shocked, to a totally different feeling. We all have our demons that we fight in this life and Gary is a human being and no different from you and me. Good for him for taking the stage and doing what he does. He has an unmistakable tone and he always has and he still does. You used to always be able to tell an REO song by the tone of that lead guitar. I can close my eyes and still hear it on this recording. Sure he looks different. So do I. I was in high school in 1977. Now I'm 54 years old. Change is part of life. We just need to roll with it. Sounds like a song title. I wish him well on his journey and I enjoyed his performance here very much.

Kind of dumb to be focusing on the physical nature of whatever Gary Richrath has going. But the anonymity of social media sure lets people say dumb things. It's so unfair to judge like what some people are doing here. No matter what, Gary Richrath was one of the most underrated lead guitarists of the 70's & 80's and this performance shows that he's still got it. Whatever he's gone through (and may still be going through), it's awesome that he's still able to share his awesome talent with us. I'll always be a fan of Gary Richrath, no matter what he looks like.
@denniscassley99929 жыл бұрын
Awesome comment, very kind & very spot-on. Watching/listening to Philbin's interview here on YT, REO's been trying for YEARS to get Gary back in the band...with conditions, of course (weight, substance use, etc.). And, for whatever reason, Gary wouldn't / couldn't do it. Hopefully, with Gary having a taste of "fan love" and audience appreciation, he can be motivated to get healthy. He was always a tennis "nut." That, for sure, would be part of it...
@patricksmith74929 жыл бұрын
Scott Marty I'm with you there. He was way more talented than he got credited for. I'm not even a huge REO fan but I've heard him make short work of a Les Paul guitar like no one else can. Same goes with some of these "Hair bands" from the 80's; you may not like how they looked, but damned if they didn't still know how to play drums and guitars and sing. Now we have is fucking rock 'n rap bullshit like Linkin Park, etc.
@rimetime64239 жыл бұрын
did you live in an alternative universe ? Where was Gary ever ''underrated'' ? I think that word is overused, Gary was and always will be a guitar icon, never underrated anywhere i went
@patricksmith74929 жыл бұрын
"Underrated" because he rarely (if ever) makes any "Top [whatever] Guitarists" list from ANY magazine, show, or publication I've seen. Underrated is not a bad thing. I'm 36 and never had the chance to see him play live with REO, but I know a damned good guitarist when I hear one. Gary blows away just about most of the guys you see in the Top 20 lists - and I'm talking good guitarists. As far as his being underrated, it's because most people only care to judge by Top 40 songs on the radio (and he was still awesome in those), but they don't care to look up and watch him play live. Looks to me like he hasn't lost his ability even 1%. Believe me, there's plenty of "underrated" guitarists and whether or I like the band, I give credit where credit is due. How many people never liked the band Cinderella but don't realize Tom Keifer can and does play any type of stringed instrument in any style (especially blues) like no other? Again, live performances will show who's who, as studios can simply pull gimmicks. I should list a Top 10 most "underrated" guitarists (regardless of band or type of music) and see what reaction I get. I did earlier but not sure it got posted.
@denniscassley99929 жыл бұрын
Cool comment!! I think the affection for Gary is, 1) Songwriting (Golden Country, Riding the Storm Out, Only the Strong Survive, etc.), 2) Stage Presence: He was a BLAST to watch on stage, the moves, the smiles, etc. 3) Perseverance & Leading the Band, for at least the first decade, 4) Empathy, for the substance troubles & resulting physical condition. Even if he doesn't make it back to looking like a matinee idol, hopefully he gets healthy & vital again. The fans -- & the band -- would CLEARLY love to embrace him again!!

Holy shit Gary was a monster player until the end. For someone I never actually met, I always loved this guy. Such an amazing guitarist who made one hell-of-an impression on my guitar playing so many years ago, back when REO was played on Mtv every hour on the hour. I've been so 'out of the loop' as far as most of the bands that I grew up listening to, that I didn't even know that he had passed. If every future guitar player starting out would listen to everything this guy ever played, they would have all they need plus some. The players like this who had their own very unique playing styles, are the best and make the deepest impressions, especially when they're as humble as he always was. It sucks so bad that substances and/or chemicals can make such a mess of people's lives when they're at their best, and take them down into the blackest pits of depression and shame. I know the depths of those pits very well myself. Nobody ever puts themselves there,,, you just wake up one day and you're there, and you can't even imagine mustering the strength and courage to climb back out. Anybody who's never been there will never understand. Anybody who thinks that he wasn't very well aware of the results that came from the unfortunate choices that he made, is nuts. We only have a little evidence of him in this condition, but he had to live with it every day of his life. I just hope that he found peace and happiness before he passed. RIP Mr. Richrath... The whole is going to miss you, and most will never even know they're missing you... I feel blessed to have seen, heard, and known of you.

Gary was also one of the best looking rockers of all time, but anyone that makes comments about his looks is most likely under 50, because us old farts can appreciate what happens as we age. Gary has a style all his own. It's not fancy. He's never been into any real effects other than a wah wah pedal. He did switch to a strat style with a whammy bar for the Life as We Know It album and tour, but for most of his life it's been Les Pauls. Lots of note bending and sustain. He was at his peak in the '70's, all the way thru Nine Lives. I didn't get the same vibe from his playing during the eighties, but he was still great. Whatever his personal issues have been, it's obvious he still knows his way around a guitar!

Without Gary there would not have been an RSW. Without his guitar we would never ever have heard a song like RWTC. Just an absolute rock classic. Just takes my breath away. Literally!

+Bobby Bailey On stage, all your problems dissipate and is forgotten for a time being. Musicians, athletes, etc. escape their personal problems/issues doing what they love...their profession. Totally caught me off guard when I heard Richrath had passed away cause I had no idea he had been battling alcoholism and suffered from it's consequences. RIP Gary...

When I saw them on the Midnight Special when I was a preteen Richcraft and his fingers on the fretboard made me want to play guitar that I still to this day. RIP Gary.🎸🎸🎸

Gary is a rock guitar LEGEND! Very underrated at times, he could literally play the snot out of a Les Paul! I'm sure even masters like Page, Lifeson, and Gilmour took notice.

One of my favorite concerts, ever, was hearing them play a rip roaring set at tiny Bowman Fieldhouse on the campus of Depauw University during their big spring party weekend (Little 500) in rural Indiana. Styx opened for them!. Richrath was THE man in that band at that time, and his guitar playing was their focus, although the rest of the band were also at the top of their game - - REO's very best days! I swear they'd play anywhere ... and did. They were our band (midwesterners)!!!

GREAT to see Gary on stage again. He had Slash's Les Paul tone before Slash did. Still has chops, still has that wonderful tone. Highly underrated lead guitarist. I hope he's gotten over his demons. Get healthy Gary!

This was a bit hard to watch but it looked like Gary was having a good time out there rocking again. I must confess to not having seen Gary for quite awhile so this was a bit of a shock. Many thanks for posting this...I enjoyed hearing that unmistakable Gary Richrath guitar sound and style again.

I knew from the moment he plugged in, he still has that monstrous tone. And I'll always love that opening riff on this song. What I don't love is how time and gravity (and other stuff) show some of us no mercy.

Becky Meier don't listen to these idiots. I was happy as hell to see him out there having a good time and smiling, not having lost a bit of playing ability. He could've flown into another Flying Turkey Trot solo and these idiots would've still botched about something. The cool thing about live shows is that we are now allowed to record them. And record them way better than some damned 80's era camcorder, all with a small handheld device. Yeah, Gary may not be in shape, but neither was REO Speedwagon after he was gone either!
