I remember hearing Gary's music through most of my late high school years and into my early college years, but it wasn't until I actually met him in person, along with my sister, at the Austin County Fair in Bellville, TX in the late 80's/early 90's that I actually could appreciate just how humble this man was. We sat backstage with him for hours visiting with him and getting to know him - he could be quite a character @ times! From that point on every time he played in the near vicinity of Houston, TX we would go to see him and once he saw us he would let us go backstage to visit with him before and in between sets. The funny thing is he had an admiration for our aunt Dena that he met just one time (she lived in Louisiana) and it made such an impression on him that he would always ask us where she was every time he would see us, which was quite a lot! Unfortunately, she passed away this past year so I like to think that in a way he finds her in heaven! Due to all the tragedy in his life I somehow cannot blame him for what he did to end his life, but on the other hand I have to really appreciate his contribution to country music. I really miss him as the funny person I personally got to know backstage and when I hear his music played on the radio now I just have to smile and remember those happy times.

I grew up in the same home town with Gary. Ft. Pierce Fl where he would play as a guest musician on Saturday nights and Frankie's and Johnny's. Gary was a terrific man with one of those voices that you just can't get enough of. So so sad that he committed suicide. He just could never get over the loss of his wife several years before. As I listen to his song's he brings back memories of my youth. Eddie

+Matt Beeman Matt, I think it was more like a year.. He had been struggling with the loss and everyone in town knew what he was going to.. He played his last concert at Friday fest in Ft. Pierce to a huge crowd and then two three weeks later he ended it.. He was a great musican and I consider myself lucky to have watched him grow from his playing days at the Merry go round bar to Frankie and Johnnies, then on to Nashville

@esmith15988 жыл бұрын
Hi Darrell, well as far as my memory goes there was probably a year between their deaths. It was widely known around here that he was terribly depressed after losing his wife. He played a concert in front of home town fans at Friday fest and then a short time later he committed suicide. Gary was just lost without her. So not sure what the time line was but certainly it was very short time between their deaths.

I remember listening to him when he was on the radio in the late 1970's when I was a kid. Even then I loved his music. To me THIS IS country music, unlike the crap that they have today that they call country music. To me country music died about 1981/82 when Alabama started to add the rock drum beats. When the actor Sam Shepherd was still alive, I always thought that he could have played Gary in a movie about him.

Gary's music was a bit before my appreciation of music. Later in life I began to listen to him and what really draws me to him/his music is the raw truth in his lyrics and the heart he puts into the music. Oh and he was a good looker too. I really appreciate music from those that maybe weren't as commercially big as others but certainly deserved to be. There is something rare in the amount of heart and realness some musicians put into their creativity. That's were my inspiration comes from. I would have liked to have met him and thumped my bass for him.
